Costly Funeral Myths Laid to Rest I WASHINGTON (UPI) time for the American consumer to be told he or she have to buy the full-blown, casketed, embalmed funeral, according to President con sumer adviser. Mrs. Virginia Knauer believes the undertaking industry is fraught with myths, most of them re Volving around Ktructive" caskets, burial rvaults with half-century and the misconception that more than jone person cannot be juried in the same grave. She told the Federal jJTrade Commission it should expand its proposed crackdown on the funeral industry to provide consumers with information $nanuals telling them that JJio matter how much they spend they are 3only delaying the inevitable and natural dtsin- i jtegration of the remains. Caskets, she said, often sold to survivors with like Jind metal caskets these kinds of designations do not even have joints, and a tar- fjtike substance is used to ijjplug holes and protect the interior of the casket.

In others, handles penetrate the casket body permitting slow seepage through the handle holes. i often rubber gaskets are held in place by double-faced she added. in caskets with welded joints, most consumers would not be aware that use of a second metal in welding creates a bimetal electrical reaction which hastens corrosion and actually limits their ability to withstand The proposed FTC rules would force funeral homes to disclose that embalming is required except in limited Mrs. Knauer said that should be expanded to tell consumers embalming does not act as the long term preservative many think it does. many cases the total funeral expenditures could be reduced up to $1,000 if the consumer is aware of the non embalming she said John Higgins of Youngstown, Ohio, legislative chairman for the Ohio Funeral Association, challenged Mrs.

Mrs. Nordquist has never worked in an asbestos related industry.

Nor has her husband or any other members of her immediate family. Her case was diagnosed about one year ago by Dr. Ran dall Johnson, a Duluth physician. now being studied by physicians at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Thursday, for (he first time, the St.

Louis County Health Department admitted publicly that Mrs. case exists and that there are three others similar to hers. All four are cases of plural mezothelioma, which is usually caused by, but not limited to, the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Like Mrs. case, the three other cases involve Duluth residents.

Unlike Mrs. Nordquist, the three other cancer victims are no longer living. Dr. Harold Lepping, director of the St. Louis County Health Department said that all four cases were of the pleural variety which is caused by inhalation or breathing of asbestos fibers and not of the peritoneal variety which would be linked to the ingestion or drinking of the fibers.

Dr. Arthur Langer, a cancer expert with the Mount Sinai School of Environmental Medicine, agreed with Lepping that plural mezothelioma is usually caused by breathing asbestos fibers, but he said also that there is always the possibility that the pleural variety could be caused by the ingestion of fibers. According to the State Health Department, whether these four cases are an abnormally high number for a city the size of Duluth is difficult to tell because the disease is so rare Flanagan, 18, Dodie Drive, possible medicine reaction. 1:22 a.m., Laurence Humbert, 38, Sherryl Lane, sick.
