Atyonc, Upper Oe< Jim« 7, 1966 Algona High Student Will Study At SUI Paett erf Alcana attend a summer science program lor Mgb-ahdlitr secondary school students on the University ol Iowa campus, Iowa Cify. ' The program , which begins June 14 and ends Aug. 10, has 68 students enrolled from throughout the United Sates. They were selected for the program on the basis of scholastic aMlity, science motivation, and completion of specified high school courses in science and mathematics. Hie students, rho are either bigb school sophomores or juniors, are able to take two university - level courses in cither mathematics, biochemistry or earth sciences. Miss Paetz of Algona high has chosen courses in the area of biochemistry.. The program also will include project work, visits to University research Laboratories, field trips, seminars and meeting with canpos scientists. A $26,000 grant from the National Science foundation supports the program which is directed by Robert Yager, associate professor of science education. Honor 2 Girls Who Topped Ledyard Class LEDYARD - Carolyn Johnson and Barbara Schroeder were named honor students at the Commencement exercises held at the Ledyard school Tuesday evening, May 23. Carolyn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Duane Johnson and she rdanp to attend Mankato Commercial College next year. Barbara is the daughter of Mrs. Martha Scbroeder and she plans to attend the State College of Iowa at Cedar Falls. Monday morning during the Memorial Day services Carolyn was presented the Citizenship Award by Supt. Gilbert DeBoer on behalf of the Kossuth County Bar Association and she and Barbara were both presented a book entitled "I Dare You" by Supt. DeBoer through the courtesy of the Danforth Society as the outstanding students of the 1966 graduating class. Plan Phone Rate Long Distance Cut July 9 Reduced rates for long distance telephone calls within Iowa were filed today with the Iowa State Commerce Commission by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. Other reductions and changes are also included in the filing which is expected to save Iowa telephone users $2,020,000 a year. As filed, the new long distance rates will become effective Ju;y 9. The proposed reductions in long distance rates range from 5f to 20$ on a three-minute call, depending upon the type of call, distance and time of day. The lower rates would apply for calls over 47 miles. According to J. E. Olson, Northwestern Bell Vice President and General Manager, the reductions result from discussions between the Iowa State Sharon Bristow Of Algona To Wed in Fall SHARON BEISTOW Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Bristow of Algona, announce the engagement of their daughter, Sharon Kae, to Thomas J. Studer. Be is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M, Studer, Algona, and is a men's hairstylist in Sioux City. Miss Bristow is a secretary in Sioux City. A fall wedding is being planned. Commerce Commission and -the Company and reflect economies from increased use of new equipment azrl new techniques which are helping to lower cost of handling intercity calls over longer distances. LuVerne Summer ._ Band Concerts The LuVerne Summer Music program wfll begin on .Friday, June 10, at 7:30 with band rehearsal at the school. The first band ^concert will be Saturday, June 11, at 8:00 downtown. Individual lessons will begin on Saturday, June 11. There will be marching band practice on Monday, June 13 at 7:00. Students will go to Mason City on Tuesday, June 14 for the Mason City Band Festival. I Council Minutes I The City Council met May 25, 1S66 with Mayor Finn and the tolloTilng council members present : Muckey, Aodreasen, Cook, Miller aad K.irce. Absent: Elbert. Minutes of last meeting were approved. Wally Hill came before the council to discuss the purchase of Lot 1, Blk. 1, Calls Third Add, which is owned by the city. No action taken at this time. Five cigarette permits were approved. Class B beer permit was approved for Hotel Algona. Letter from Raymond Gerdes tendering his resignation from the Algona police force was read. Authorized the Fire Chief and two other members of the fire dept. to attend a fire school at Ames, la. Paul Seeley was appointed to the Board of Adjustment. Mrs. McCullough and Mr. Chrischilles were reappointed to the Library Board. Discussion was held cm sending out notices for sidewalk repairs, CUy Clerk will submit a list snowing the need of sidewalk repairs at next council meeting. Authorized the Mayor to enter into contract with Everds Bros, for street maintenance program, Resol. appointing the Judges and Clerks and naming the polling places for the coming special election on TV cable was adopted. Authorized the Mayor to announce that a public bearing will be held on the methodof financing a General Development Plan for Algona. Authorized the police dept. to send Al Boekelman and Richard Groen to the State Police Shoot at Camp Dodge, Des Moines, la. Ordinance No. 400 entitled "An Ordinance Amending Ord. No. 413, the Municipal Code, by Amending Chapter 11, Title VI, so as to make said chapter consistent with the State Plumbing Code as it appears In the Iowa Departmental Rules, 1962, as amended by the 1964 Supplement to the Iowa Departmental Rules," was adopted. ResoL approving the use of voting machines at the coming TV Cable special election was adopted. Moved and seconded the meeting adjourn.
