Washington 14-13 A crowd of 14000 watched the Cavaliers chalk up their second triumph but only after they withstood a desperate passing attack by the winless Colonials in the closing moments Virginia took a 7-0 lead in the second period after Center Jim Pugh recovered a fumble on the GW one-yard marker Herb Hart well rammed across and Sophomore Stan Knowles whose vital placement later in the game was to be the difference between victory and defeat booted the extra point The Cavaliers held on to that seven-point margin desperately until the fourth period when the Colonials suddenly came to life Writer CLEMSON Oct Virginia Tech played a magnificent first halt this afternoon and then spent the second standing off Clemson and heat prostration to score an 18-7 decision It was the most notable victory of a season which so far has been made up of nothing but smashing triumphs The Gobblers swift striking Light Brigade with Wonder Boy Howie Wright and Dickie Beard leading the assault beat C3em-son on the head three times with its own mistakes the first two quarters to take an 18-0 lead at halftime Then Tech had to fight every inch of the way in 95-degree-plus temperature to preserve its third straight conquest of the season Two Quick Score A pass interception and two fumble recoveries brought Tech m' brace of touchdowns before the game was nine minutes old and a third 45 seconds from the end of the second quarter Clemson made fmly two penetrations of Tech territory the first half and seemed to do nothing' but spend time there the second It 'was equal parts of the seating heat and Don King which kept Tech gasping for breath in the later stages Kept out of action through most of the first half because of the knee injury which had kept him benchbound the week before against before King threw a 39-yard scoring strike to End Harry Hicks early in the fourth Clemson stormed into Tech territory twice more before Leo Burke took the anxious Gobbler faithful off the hook with less than two minutes remaining by intercepting a King flat puss on the six and returning 55 yards before being overtaken by exhaustion and a pair of Clemson tacklers Running out the clock after that Tech presently marched off the field with three for three against Atlantic Coast Conference opposition from the Carolina! and a wins against a team most people including Frank Moseley the coach had been saying might be the strongest on the schedule If this wss the big test Tech passed it handsomely even though Beard muffed three conversion tries something which looked as if it could be fatal at punt 93 yards and rushed for another on a six-inch sneak today as William and Mary upset Pennsylvania 27-7 for the second straight loss Sumner from Salem Va put the torch to the Indians' victory fire with a 93-yard touchdown print that for all practical purposes put the game out of Penn's reach That was second touchdown of the game A third score by the Indians came before the end of the half Penn finally found a scoring punch in the third period as Walt Hynoski sprinted 30 yards around end for the first TD by the Red and Blue since Steve Sebo became coach this year The big difference between the teams was great running and a slashing line that beat Penn to the punch on offense and defense It was three years ago on this same field that Sumner first showed his heels to the Penns lugging a kickoff return 89 yards for a core that helped the Southerners upset Penn 20-12 Today with his team leading 6-0 in the second quarter Sumner caught a punt on his seven faked a handoff and headed to the sideline at his right He got two big blocks there by Sam Scott and Bob Meith that broke him Into the clear at the 35 and he sped down the line barely fast enough to escape a desperation tackle by Fred Dustin at the Penn 10 In addition to scoring twice Sumner passed for another touchdown In the fourth quarter a ball that was tipped by Penn's John Gurskie and caught on the three-yard line by Bob of Indians the Cleveland Indians had never lost a World Series Of course this was only the third tiwi the Indians had won the American League pennant and as a result played the National standard-bearers Until this afternoon Leo Durocher admittedly one of the finest managers in baseball history had not masterminded a team to a World Series victory in 1941 Durocher missed with the Dodgers against the New York Yankees In 1951 with his Miracle" Giants he again missed against the Yankees But Leo made it today made it the easy way for the second straight afternoon and the Giants did something no other team ot Giants has done-swept the big series in four games The Mc-Gravian Giants of 1922 won four games without a loss to Babe Ruth and the Yankees but there was a tie game that
