Oh I mean plarck I've got to do something about that American accent" The PR people thought was very good of Lane to get up on the elephant his Kamahl imitation" though they weren't too sure when the mayor tried The final touch was to he when Lane the mayor and Sue commemorated the occasion by imprinting their handsfeet in cement in the parking hay Rut at the first try the cement was too wet and as someone ran for the paper towels two of the guest or honor adjourned to the refreshment marquee and the third homed in on another azalea It seemed a good time to leave Quite a few of the kids had pedalled off somewhere already It was with great delight as we turned the corner that ND discovered where they had ell gone Parked around the back of Australia's first super-duper 7-11 convenience store was a battered old ice-cream van run by one smiling Greek He was doing roaring trade We're sure he have a permit to be thera Frankly we don't give a damn POSTSCRIPT to the death of the 1 five Australian TV newsmen in East Timor the future of the local small mixed-buainess network Be that aa it may yesterday' "do" launched the 7-11 operation with one of those PR performance that for our sins ND cannot resist Thev fascinate absolutely mesmerise It must he a form of masochism a bit like walking past the Acland St cake shop when you're on a diet or listening to vnur English husband listening to the cricket The main criterion for the suc-resa of these events i that whatever is going on in the foreground should near a little relevance as possible to the real activity of the day Our previous favorite was the opening of a carpet store by a mature television personality a camel a girl in a bellv-dancer's outfit and a magician Magic carpet theme gel it? So few people turned up that the magic-man refused to wave his wand the camel went to sleep in the gutter and the harem-girl hurst into tears For sheer pathos It heat yesterday's show by a mile but out at Oakleigh we still had some fairly amazing moments The guest of honor wera Don Lane Oakleigh mayor Bury Cslisgtian and a 35-year-old Indian alaphant called Sue straight find Beverley" she shrieked did get that public liability cover didn't For a brief moment we all held our breath Were wa about to wiinesa one of she dramatic events of our time? No all was well Beverley had fixed the inaurance and the broker wa even presenr Don lane could fall if he ao chose All this was taking plare nut at Warrigal Road Oakleigh yesterday morning for the opening of Ausiralia'a "first" 7-11 convenience aiore Australia should be so lucky! A 7-11 is an American Invention a sort of cross between the old corner shop milk bar and a supermarket it'a called convenient because of the hours it'a open (7 am-1 1 pm) and because parking space ia provided out the front No one walk to a shop any more The United Slates has 6000 7-I Is The Australian wholesale food firm Withers has bought the area licence to bring them here and has plans for 500 nationwide over the next in years Which should do a lot for cheeked 31-year-old managing (iuci'tor of Pacific Seven the Withers subsidiary that Is run ning the 7-11 stores said he wanted the children to think of his shop as the "lollv-store" and to know they would always ha well treated there kids ignored him and watched Sue demolish a pile of red cardboard strawberries decorating the entrance (The invitations to yesterday's extravaganza featured that old joke about how do you disguisa an elephant in a strawberry patch? Yes Sue's toe-nails were painted red By a model in a lighter T-shirt The mayor "Just call me Mayor Moonface Don" unveiled a plaque which had been hidden behind an Australian flag "We're very keen for people to know we're an Aussie aid Russell Withers and the half dozen American 7-11 representatives present almost disappeared behind their low profiles from Bullen's Lion Park out on the Ballarat Road It Just a little bit different to have an elephant al an opening someone suggested to Lane? Who to give him credit couldn't think of a reply Sue did her bit to recycle both the azaleas in the carpark plus the vast white garment bearing a 7-11 slogan which someone had wrapped around her midriff The company intended to ask the Guineas Book of Records to recognise it as the world's largest T-shirt a voice said Thera wera a lot of kids on bikes and with dogs- plus a few mums on their way to the local shops They looked a bit surprised when a bloke in robes and lace and chains grabbed a microphone and told them the arrival of the 711 store was another first for Oakleigh and also a definite breath of fresh eir "I'd like to thank all the people who pushed this permit through" niifl hi- mavor rionr-u Russell Withers the rosy ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT I UgKUSI gv Jennings Jennmgs Industries Limited 690Sprmnva'e Road Mulgrave 3170 690Sprmnva'e Road Mulgrave i IN I BRIEF Radio may Deadline Stamp artist speaks frankly about quality ttv is Mr bdwa'ds Tel 661 8333 Tura Beach Otfce (0649) 5 1646 Sydney Mr Wanng 436 6464 I I nears escape SMM4174jM for film contest A box of gems for sparkling Watchdog viewing Entries in the 15th international competition for young film makers dose on September 1 The competition will be Judged in Milan Italy in November It ia open to film makers under 20 with a second category for those under 16 Three categories are vided in age groups INCOME TAX OUR EXCLUSIVE INDUSTRY CHECKLISTS MAKE SURE YOUR TAX CLAIMS ARE COMPLETE The Incsnw Tax Prolissianali have axcJinlvs Industry Checklists to ensurs you ctaim on avaiyttilng you're antitM to-eo you gat a full tax rotund Returns are completed quickly accurately try ITP Consultants And the ITP aattrtca doesn't end when your return la completed ITP wiH handle all details should the Tax Department raise any queries And you can talk to ITP shout your tax if Mrs anytime during the year At no extra cost And ra member ITP leas art roatonablo and tax deductible CaNTha lucent Tax PrsftiilsMl NOW! likely to trigger the abandonment of Federal Government proposals for a Press Council-style watchdog on broadcasters The tribunal in a report to be tabled today is understood to give no support to a Government decision last year to set up a broadcasting council to regulate the industry Establishment of the council has already been deferred and the report is likely to lead to its abandonment It is believed the tribunal will recommend the establishment of a bureau within its own organisation to hear complaints about broadcasters and give information to the public The report which includes its long-awaited recommendations on industry self-regulation is believed to recommend the industry be given only partial regulatory responsibility There is believed to be a split between the tribunals chairman Mr Bruce Gyngell and the two other members on the question of eelf-regulation for local content on television Mr Gyngell is understood to favor self-regulation in local content questions The other two members want a set quota of Australian programmes Mr Gyngell will address the National Press Club after the tabling of the report in Parliament Meanwhile 122 commercial radio stations have follows the fortunes of two soldiers through World War I and II The premier episode is fast moving well acted and offers a high production standard But the script is superficial providing neither time
