EAST AQ10 862 A 5 8 3 10 9752 A 10 4 495 65 4 2 SOUTH K4 762 A 10 8 The bidding: Booth Wait North Cut 1 club Pace 1 diamond Pat na trump Paw an trump fan Paaa Paw Open lead: Six of spades In today's hand North spread upon the table a dummy which reeked of death but South by a strange device breathed liTe into the corpse It was difficult to stay out of three no trump with normal bidding South's hand was overweight for a one no trump opening so he started the action with- one club and over natural response of one diamond leaped to two no trump for which he had the prescribed 19 points It was routine for North to carry on to three West opened the six of spades and declarer played the nine from dummy which was not an idle gesture as we shall see presently East won with the ace If West had opened from a five-card suit it was clear that South was fighting a losing battle For nine tricks could be brought in only on the remote contingency that the king of clubs was alone Sneaking into dummy with a diamond does not present a bright prospect It will be apparent to the opposition that declarer is now defenseless in spades and they will be "rushing in" to Declarer saw that if the club king were favorably located he could win the hand by getting into dummy the hard way The rule of 11 makes it evident that East has only one spade higher than the six and he has already played it So South dropped the king of spades under the ace Now defenders could not pre- vent him from entering dummy with the jack of spades unless they abandoned the spade suit in which case declarer would have plenty of time for all his 1 work After this maneuver the nine of clubs became the lead-' ing man in the drama for putting through that card enabled declarer to bring in five club tricks Returning to the play from dummy at trick one The nine is a better choice than the seven This protects declarer if lead has been from A-Q-10-6-2 in which case he gains immediate entry to dum-' my The jack would be the winning play if West had led from A -Q -8 -6-2 but it would lose whenever East held the queen The play of the seven is inferior for it does not gain in any case 7:80 Dennis Ruth Ilussey Billy
