hard-charging freshman guards Sid Varney and Bill Wardle the hard-running Carolina Carolina backs Tailback Bob Warren Fullback Bill Voris and Wingback Jim Camp raced through gaping holes in the Virginia forewall time after time as they drove almost the length of the field for three of the four Carolina touchdowns But the Cavaliers completely outclassed during the first half struck for three touchdowns In the second half to make a ball game of what started out to be a runaway for the Tarheels of Coach Carl Snavely 61-Yard Run Trailing 0-20 in the third period Ray Brown sophomore halfback from Falls Church gave the Virginia supporters among the crowd of 15000 something to cheer about when he broke through the center of the Carolina line and raced 61 yards for a touchdown Just a few minutes bter the same Brown boy who played himself a Brown boy who played lot of football this sunny hut chilly day set up a second Virginia touchdown by getting off a beautiful quick kick which rolled dead on Carolina's seven-yard line Following Carolina's punt the Cavaliers moved down to the 15- yard line and Coach Frank Mur- ray rushed in Freshman Sam Fray a lad with a terrific burst of speed Fray sped around his right end for two yards then taking a shovel pass from Quarterback Gil Sullivan wheeled around Carolina's right end to go all the way for a touchdown and bring the Tarheels back within shooting distance Drive Falls Moreover the Cavaliers having found their offensive spark moved all the way from their 10-yard line to Carolina's 23 the next time they got their hands on the ball But Joe Stanley who with Bob Caine had carried the heavy load in the advance was dropped for a five-yard loss and Sullivan switched to the air Three passes one by Sullivan and two by Stanley fell incomplete in the end zone and the by-then worried Tarheels took over on their 28 Voris Warren and Grow the latter in at wingback for Camp then alternated in driving 2 yards for a fourth Carolina score The final Tarheel march ended the hopes of winning but not their scoring for while the crowd was filing out of the stadium they struck for a third touchdown on a 67-yard pass play Stanley to Fray The speedy resh-man back who prepped at Wood-berry Forest got behind the Carolina secondary and catching Stanley! pass on the Carolina 35 aped all the way for the touchdown The Tarheel operating from a single wingback and running their reverses particularly a double reverse had too much drive for the Virginians whose tackling was poor this afternoon Tarheels Msrch Receiving the opening kickoff Carolina marched 4 1 yards for the first score of the game The longest run of the drive was a 10-yard gallop by Camp around his own right end for the touchdown It was Warren or Camp swinging wide around the ends or Voris shooting ahead on his spinners all the way the plays gaining from four to eight yards at a clip The Tarheels attempted but one pass during the drive and It fell Incomplete Carolina's aerial game which had given Duke a second-half scare a week ago held in check by the Cavaliers throughout the game except for a 57-yard scoring pass-and-run which accounted for the second touchdown Later in the first period after Camp had intercepted Charlie Ellis's pass on the Carolina 30-yard ribbon Voris and Warren ground out a first down on the Tarheel's 43 On the next play Warren faded back and passed to the left to End Pritchard who had gotten one step behind Fllis playing the right side back As Ellis realizing he had been hoodwinked turned he slipped and fell Pritchard took the pass on the Virginia 35 and ran unmolested for the touchdown Cox who had kicked the first extra point from placement repeated and Carolina had a 14-0 lead before the first period had ended Virginia Gets Break A poor kick by Warren which rolled dead on Carolina's 33 gave Virginia its first real scoring opportunity early in the second period and Ellis and Brown combined their running and passing talents to move the Cavaliers down to the 11 There the Tarheels braced and three Virginia passes by Ellis fell harmlessly in the end zone Carolina received the second-half kickoff and in less than four Carl Snavely Bad Tackling Is Costly To Cavaliers By Laurence Leonard Special to The Times-Diapatch CHAPEL IIILL Dec Had linemen made their tackling a little surer this afternoon they perhaps would have won themselves a football game with the University of North Carolina's youthful Tarheels rather than suffer a 27-to-18 setback There w-as no continuous indication of the Cavaliers' certainty in their tackling and consequently Carolina rolled up ntuch yardage in driving touchdowns against a dogged opponent It was a good thing for the Tarheels that they found Virginia when her tackling wasn't up to par for the Cavaliers made a brilliant comeback with Ray Brown Sam Fray and Bob Caine setting the pace In fact comeback turned an apparent rout into a splendid ball game and Caine a twice wounded veteran of the Tinian and Iwo Jima campaigns Joe Stanley a Lexington frosh and Charlie Ellis of Harrisonburg gave indications they no doubt will be important cogs in Coach Frank team next year The teams were Impressive to such an extent a great portion of the 15000 person who saw this fiftieth renewal of the oldest football rivalry walked out of Kenan Stadium at sunset virtually convinced that come another campaign both Virginia and North Carolina win attract widespread attention for the kids especially Brown and Fray stole the show this time This game was one that pleased most everybody Carl Snavely back at Carolina after nine years at Cornell was delighted with his boys were offensive-minded all the he said it was a lucky thing because Virginia was clicking too Virginia has a fine set of fast hard-running backs Our whole line played a fine brand of ball and the blocking was excellent on reverses and end Like Snavely Coach Murray thought it was a fine game was the cleanest game I've seen all he said Murray thought Virginia was outmanned from the start and he liked the way his boy came back despite terrific power in the ground" Murray singled out Milton Par-low a junior who has been out of action since November 1 along with Fray and Ellis for individual praise Gray's two touchdown trots livened up the affair Our entire team played a good game but it was outmanned by a stronger Carolina team" Murray declared Carolina's play was fine and hard Part of shoddy tackling might be attributed to the hard running for the Cavalier linemen frequently were getting their hands on opponents only to lose them Actually the and the kids had themselves quite a time Snavely has a squad preponderantly freshmen They've improved with each game hit a high shot last week in their close tussle with Duke and then ascended the peak this time to go one up in the aged series with Virginia Robinson Got Around Jackie Robinson Negro baseball player signed by Montreal isn't new to headlines First time he 1 for UCLA he stole five ses including two steals of home hna A 15-yard penalty for un necessary roughness moved the ball to the 15 and Fray came in to score in two plays and then return to the bench Then followed long but fruitless drive the Tarheels' fourth score and Vjrginia'a third touchdown The Cavaliers put up a game goal-line stand as Carolina scored Its last tally The Tarheels had paraded down the field for five consecutive first downs and were one foot from the end zone with four downs to make it Three attempts by Voris and War left the ball-still shy of pay Hirf hut fmirth wmm dirt but on fourth down Warren shot through a hole in the right side of Virginia's line to score Attack Sharpens The statistics are indicative of Carolina's superiority on the ground The Tarheels gained 369 srounu ine larneeis gained 3b 142 Carolina edge in first downs was 24 to 11 But the Virginia offense which sputtered throughout the first half was a pretty thing to watch in the second half when the sub backs Caine Stanley Fray and Sullivan teamed with Brown to score three touchdowns The Tarheels had spotted Virginia's weakness against wide stuff and the Carolina field general poured the outside stuff at the Cavalier ends Deep reverses single and double were run behind a phalanx of blockers with telling effect Up front for the Cavaliers Milt Pariow at tackle and Wayne Cantrell at guard were the most effective operatives But Brown Virginia's biggest star played superbly on defense as well as on offense The victory gave Carolina a 24-23
