into two minutes piay- VMI Racks Up 26-7 Victory Over Furman Thomason Aerial Ace Stars for Keydets GREENVILLE Nov PI Tossing Bob Thomason unloaded his aerial dynamite on Furman University here today and Virginia Military Institute racked up a 26-to-7 Southern Conference victory before five thousand fans Using a diversified single wing attack the Keydets capitalized on ie accurate pitching or Thomason to score three touchdowns in the first half and match Furman's one in the second Thomason and his aides completed 12 of 18 tosses to harrass the helpless Furman secondary throughout the game Furman produced two drives paced by the running of Skeeter Coyle and Bill Smith and the passing of Charlie Trulock but could make only one complete Furman pushed deep into VMI territory early on the first period with a booming 52-yard punt by Paul Strimbaugh but the Keydets came back with a 56-yard kick of their own to set the Hurricanes back again After Vince Ragunas intercepted a pass on the VMI 43 the Virginians failed to gain and were forced to kick the ball roll- Cavaliers Score 20-6 7 Over Tigers 24000 Witness Ivy Team Upset PRINCETON Nov The unheralded University of Virginia Cavaliers who had lost their last two games by an aggregate total of 52 points tore the Princeton line to shreds today and trotted off the field with a stunning 20-6 upset over the Tigers A crowd of 24 thousand in Palmer Stadium watched Virginia rip off a total of 275 yards through a Tiger line which last week stopped the University of Pennsylvania So effective was the running attack led by 195-pound Bruce Bailey a former Navy lieutenant that they resorted to only seven passes throughout the game Lending a big assist to Bailey were George Neff and John Duda both of whom tore off big chunks of yardage Cavaliers Tally In First Half All the Virginia scoring was done in the first half and Bailey was directly responsible for each touchdown In the second half the Virginians contented themselves with stopping a Tiger aerial onslaught which although effective at times availed but one touchdown that coming at the very start of the third period Virginia completely dominated matters in the first period and in the course of two drives one of which was stalled on the Tiger three notched their first score Virginia lost the ball on downs and Dave Carpenter gat off a kick from behind his own goal which George Grimes took on the 40 and carried to the 29 After reaching the 17 the Cavaliers were set back to the 22 on penalty At that point Bailey caught the Tiger secondary completely by story-book finish here at Memorial Stadium today scoring in the last 30 seconds of play to defeat a fighting Washington and Lee team 13-7 before 12 thousand cheering fans A pass from Back Ralph Beard to End Jimmy Ransome that carried to the Generals' 16 set up the winning marker with Substitute Back Dave Thomas ramming over five plays later for the marker The Generals had taken a 7-6 lead early in the final stanza when Dick Working passed to End Bill Chipley in the end zone for a touchdown and End Bob Riley place-kicked the extra point Tech scored its other touchdown in the third period with Ralph Beard plunging over from the two but Ross Orris placement was wide Tech made 12 first downs to the seven and outgained them on the ground 169 yards to a mere seyen The Lexington eleven however Halfback Joe Watt gave Syracuse a 14-7 upset win over Cornell today before a near capacity crowd of about 29 thousand fans Cornell scored on the first play of the founth period when Halfback Hillary Chollet went over frixn the one-yard line ing time the first touchdown a 33-yard dash by Art Weiner on an end-around play coming eight minutes before the end of the half and the second following just two minutes later as Billy Myers Charlie Justice's relief man at tailback slipped over M's right tackle for one yard and six points Bob Cox Carolina's kicking specialist added both extra points with place-kicks just as he did following the third touchdown Carolina's third score came shortly after the second-half kickoff when Bob Longacre fumbled when tackled and a couple of Carolina backs Bill Sutherland and Walt Pupa recovered for the Tarheels just inside A M's 30-yard ribbon From there the White Phantoms swept down to the two-yard line where It was first and goal The Indians held for three plays but then Wingback Jim Camp wheeled around the left end on a double reverse to score The Indians scored late In the third period Stan Magdziak topping off a 65-yaM drive by driving through the Tarheels' fore-wall from three yards out for the touchdown The same Indian back added theextra point with a perfect place-kick Justice Is Checked The Braves carried out their regame defensive plan to stop Justice Choo-Choo Charlie was hounded all afternoon by the Indians particularly Knox Ramsey and Bob Steckroth His longest run from scrimmage was for 11 yards In 17 rushes Justice was held to a running game by alternating the assignments Jbe-tween Jack Wilboume'Ed Ralston and Tom Billingsley the Spiders handed the scappy Wildcqjs their fourth Southern Conference loss Coach Johnny charges got their ffrst marker with less than a minute left in the initial period Marion Timberlake sub for Fenlon punted out on the Davidson nine and after Bthea kicked for the Wildcats the Spiders needed only one move to score Timberlake tried to pass from his own 28 but Sheppard knocked it down then on second down Pat Fenlon entered the game and handed the ball to Wilboume who went over guard for 28 yards and a six-pointer Thompson in at end for Sizer made the point The Virginians pushed across another tally midway in the second period and again it was hustling Wilboume who hit pay dirt After Fenlon had sneaked 46 yards around end to the Davidson 22 he handed off to Wilboume who hit tackle for the entire distance Neither team was able to gain consistently during the remainder of the period and the Virginians held a 40-0 margin by virtue of conversion after the second score Despite the mass of yardage which the visitors accumulated the Wildcats fighting to the last stayed in the game Twice
