Techmen growing stronger as the game wore on and turning loose a hard-running and left-handed passing back Sophomore Ralph Beard for consistent gains all but won the ball game in the last few minutes of the bitterly fought contest With less than five minutes playing time remaining Big John (The Greek) Maskaa mighty tackle partially blocked one of George punts and the Cavaliers drew a 15-yard penalty for interference giving Tech the ball on the Virginia 32 for the last big chance Beard on a verse to the left went 13 yards to the 19 and after Walton had picked up six through the line Beard again took the ball from Waiton on a reverse and fought his way eight yards to the five-vard line where it was first and goal to go Walton smashed into the line but the ball shot out of his hands as he was tackled and Bruce Bailey recovered for the Cavaliers in the end zone for touchback Virginia getting the ball on the 20-yard ribbon Tech Trails at Half Tech left the field at the half on the short end of a 14-7 score the Cavaliers 7-point margin hav ing come just four plays before the second period ended on a 47-yard touchdown run on a punt return by Ray Brown high scorer last season and quite a hack out there on the grass of Victory Stadium this afternoon Starting from their own 47-yard line early in the third period the Gobblers swept 53 yards for a touchdown with Ross true toe adding the extra point and tying the score at 14-14 The telling thrust in that touchdown drive was 35-yard pass to freshman end Oren Hopkins which placed the ball on the 15-yard stripe From there the Techmen moved to the three for a first down but on fourth down they wefe six yards from pay dirt Walton then shot a short pass to the left to Bibby Smith a Charlottesville boy who caught the ball on being held to a 6-6 draw at intermission Georgia Tech rolled to a 32-6 victory over a scrappy Virginia Military1 Institute eleven today before 25000 VMI scored first after six minutes of play but except for an occasional short spurt was never a threat after that as the Jackets completely dominated the offensive action Tech scored three times on passes once on a line plunge and again on a put together two touchdowns one late in tbe third quarter and another after a pass intercept ion early In the fourth By the time the Bulldogs got around to scoring the Indians had scored six touchdowns and there were no indications McCray waa biting his fingernails by the unexpected show of Citadel power It was a brave comeback by the Bulldogs but all it served was to ruffle the composure of the Indians Citadel was knocked out of the game in the very first minutes of play with Tommy Korczowski leading party about the Indian backfield doing the principal job of kicking over the home team The fellow began things by returning the opening kickoff 25 yards to the 24 Then after Bob Longacre picked up a yard Korczowski was off again around right end gallowing all the way down to the three before Emery Webster making a desperate dive pulled him down from the rear That set the stage for Jack Cloud to hop over for the touchdown Stan Magdziak kicked the extra point Korczowski gave the Bulldogs more of the same business in the third quarter galloping 75 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage following the second half kickoff AH in all Korczowscki carried the ball three times gaining 74 75 and eight yards for the tries for a total average of 52 1-3 yards The first Korezowski-engineered touchdown merely yerved to whet the appetite of the Indians For immediately thereafter Tommy Thoiupnon who was moved up to first team center the past week following Lzu floltsma's shift to end rushed in to block Webster's punt on the Indian 34 and he caught the ball in the air and scon led over for a touchdown Magdziak repeated on the extra point Almost Immediately after that score the Indians came close again driving from midfield to the 17 The push came to' an over a favored ant apparently stronger Navy football team today to gain its first triumph: over the Midshipmen since 1939 Startling a sellout crowd of 35000 by the speed of their comeback the Lions apparently overpowered by reserve strength rallied to tie the score late in the third quarter and then took advantage of two Navy lapses to score nine points in the final period The Midshipmen strong but awkward and unpolished apparently were wearing down the undermanned Columbia squad when they took a 14-7 lead in the first half and barely missed scoring an other touchdown early in the third period i But all of a sudden Lou Kus-serow broke through Navy guard on a tricky formation play and before the Columbia offense was checked the Lions had scored the tying touchdown They got a break on this drive when Navy was offside on the play when Jack Nork failed to score from the one-foot mark on fourth down Columbia was given another chance and Kusserow made it good Punt Blocked Then on the first play of the final quarter some one failed to block out tackle Jack Oliver while Lynn Chewning punted The ball caromed off rbest out of bounds and Columbia took over on the Navy 17 Two plays later when the quarter was only 50 seconds old Ventan Yablonski crashed through the Navy line and lugged a couple of tacklers across the goal line 15 yards away Yablonski missed the point and it still enough today to pile up more points against footballers than any other grid outfit has done for three years but not nearly often enough to stop the Cadets from careening to their twenty-first straight victory Not since Notre Dame kicked the Army mule all around the Yankee Stadium premises in 1943 has an upstart set of gridders dared to do what the Cornells did this time actually leading for a few moments in the first 'quarter then coming up off the floor to score twice more in the dosing half But all it got them for their troubles and their good old college try was a 46 to 21 whipping by Earl too healthy speaking from a strictly football point of view of course Two of the Cornell touchdowns at the end of the third quarter when rapid-running Wally Kretz went over after Bob passes had set it up and at the start of the final chapter when Jack Burns heaved a 22-yarder to Hilliard Chollet were counted against the Army second stringers As a matter of fact Cornell out-first-downed the Cadets 13 to 8 And actually only while Davis was in there through the first quarter and again in the third period did the Cadets really dflhny of their big-time prowling although Quarterback Arnie Tucker can
