ACTION GETS rough in the Friday night ninth grade intra-squad Red and While: football game. The Whites used the passing of Donald Clark and the catching of Milburn Emmons to grind out a 21-13 upset win over the Reds. Sports Casts And Forecasts By Bill McMurray Football Picture Picks Up After Game Football fans who made it out to Hopper Field last Friday night saw some action that makes the grid picture at the high school look to a bright future.

Several of the ninth graders that took part in the Red and White Intra-squad game showed promise of making a top notch AAAA football team. Some rough spots were there but they are bound to be worked out and these ninth graders from Freeport, Velasco, Clute and Lake Jackson should give a good account of themselves in a few years. Coach Kenneth Wilson and his staff of Virgil Eikenberg, Robert Wagstaff, L. Z. Bryan, Flash Walker and Roberson have done a fino job in just three short weeks in bringing these boys along this far.

Most of the players that the fans saw Friday night will go to make the Storm Squad and the Junior Varsity next football season. The problem of coaches for these two teams has come up several times and as yet the coaching staff is not completed. soon as the Brazosport School Board acts on this problem it will be released. With the three football team system in the high school it with put the Exporters on the plane with other major grid powers in the state, such ns Baylown, Abilene, Port Arthur and many of the Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth clubs, 'addition to the ninth graders going through three weeks of rough drills, the four area Junior Highs were also working long and hard ut spring foolball practice. Between 250 and 300 boys were out in Freeport, Velasco, Clutc and Lnke Jnckson and 18 this number keeps rising the football picture around this area should grow into a major power in AAAA cireles.

Nearly everyone we talked with after the game was well pleased with the showing of the ninth graders and their work on Hopper Field Friday night. The running was good, passing above average and the blocking and tackling hard. Several of these boys are real hustlers and will be hard to keep off the varsity in a year or two. The next thing to look forward to, as far as football is concorned in tho Brazosport area, is the varsity spring training around the first of May. At that time all foolball hopefuls from the senior school will go through a stiff three-wook period of football.

Following that, a big Red and White intra-squad game is being planned and this should go long way In giving the fans un idea of what kind of club the Shippers will field in District 12-AAAA next year. Coach Wilson has already said that 11 positions are wide open and any boy that comes out for football has a chance to move into a starting berth, so we expect to see some real buttles for number one roles. All the Exporter 1955 lettermen, along with Storm Squad boys and newcomers will be in the fight for starting roles, and members of the squad. A nice trip is planned next season to Brownsville and all the boys that make the traveling squad aro due 10 have a fino time following the ball game which, by the way, might be a little rough, Texas Tech To Run, Shoot On SMU We noliced where the Texas Tech basketball team picked up two emergency replacements for their Tuesday game with SMU for NCAA berth. The game will be played in Wichita, Kan.

In addition to the team the team manager and a football tackle were pressed into service by Coach Polk Robinson when it was learned that four squad members were ineligible for the playoffs. Two top Tech scorers, Jim Reed and DuWayne Blacksherr, played as freshmen and have been lost to the team since the end of the regular season. Storling Gibson and Earl Redwine were cently declared ineligible because they are transfers, That only leaves six regular sound members that will be able to go against the Mustangs Tuesday. The last minute replarements were team manager Dennis Calvest and Barton Massey, who just returned from a hitch in the service. We also picked up a story where the Raiders were going to try to run and shoot on the Methodist.

This will be good If they can do it but we will go along with SMU to co all the way in the NCAA tournament. However, we think that the onlv way a team could beat the Ponies would be to run and shoot with them.
