(AP) State police searched today for a man who was reported to have been sucked out of a DC10 jetliner at nearly 40,000 feet after an engine exploded and the cabin depressurized. The National Airlines wide- bodied jet with 128 persons aboard was en route from Miami to San Francisco when the accident occurred Saturday night.

Witnesses said one passenger, listed on the passenger manifest as G. F. Gardner of Beaumont, was sucked out through a window. One passenger said a stewardess told her husband that "she had just served the man a drink and saw him go out the window." Lou Spohn of Ukiah, said he was sitting in front of the missing man when the engine exploded. Spohn said he grabbed the man's leg but was unable to maintain his grip as the man was forced through the window.

The airliner, which was headed for a stop at Las Vegas, made an emergency landing at Albuquerque International Airport. Police said they would continue using helicopters in their search for the victim. Gardner was believed to be a machinist employed by Bethlehem Shipyards and based in Beaumont. The company said Gardner was en route to a job site in Singapore. The man's reported death was the only fatality, although 23 persons were reported to have received hospital treatment for injuries after the plane landed.

Many of the injuries apparently occurred as passengers exited the plane via emergency slides. The airline said most of the injuries were minor. The reason for the engine failure has not been disclosed. National Transportation Safety Board investigator Guy Moshier said, "Hopefully, we'll get some answers that might keep this from happening again." Hans 0. Sand dies Hans 0.
