tri-color of Virginia Military Institute waved proudly ovrr the ramparts in the twilight of Homecoming Day game at Scott Stadium as the strains of the last alumni quartet died in the distance For Pooley Hubert's red white and yellow machine taking advantage of every break and operating behind smooth blocking had rolled up another Old Dominion victory to add to its rapidly mounting string defeating the courageous but outclassed Cavaliers of Frank Murray by the score of 26 to 7 A colorful crowd of 10000 largest at Charlottesville since the dedication of Scott Stadium in 1931 watched I smash to victory on a muddy field The Keydets ld by- Sophomore Paul Shu stepped quickly to the fore and held a 13-0 lead at the end of the first period Virginia rame back with its best exhibition in intermission pile on two more touchdowns and add an extra point before the firing had ceased I tallied twire in the first period and twice in the third In scoring its third victory within the Old Dominion's borders since the season started Just as he unveiled Dark Horse Andy Trzeciak in Richmond last Saturday Coach Hubert turned loose another fleet ball carrier yesterday to vie with Paul Shu and the others for ground gaining honors Tills time it was Bill Roberson of Lynchburg who lammed back hard on punts all afternoon over the slippery turf and added a lot of spark to the Keydets' attack But Just as was the case last Saturday against Richmond It was Shu tl-9 hard-running sophomore who fired the first gun in the offensive The big crowd In gay and festive mood was hardly settled down before Mr Shu who sounds like one of those Chinese generals but is different in that he gains ground instead of losing It came tearing around his own right end behind good blocking for 27 yards and the first I touchdown He missed the try for point but the Keydets were off This play however came after Virginia had thrown something of a scare into the ranks of the military lads by making a menacing gesture Following the kickoff which Virginia received Sharretts sliced a nice kick out of bounds on the I 15 Trzeciak punted back to the Virginia 38 and Jim Gillette returned to the I 38 Little Bus Male picked up three yards on a fake and then tossed a flat pass to Gillette who ran 25 yards to a first down on the 10 Four Tries Fail The Cavaliers however decided to stick to the air game and the result was that Todd an end passed over the goal line on fourth down Incomplete giving the ball on its 20 without gaining a foot On the first play from there Roberson clicked off 27 yards on a sprint around his left end Shu was stopped for no gain Kovar got four at tackle and then Trzeciak punted over Virginia's goal line in an effort to plant one in coffin corner Sharretts Immediately kicked back and Roberson receiving on his 40 returned to midfield In exactly two plays I had scored Bud Kovar went off right tackle on a reverse for 22 and a first down on the Virginia 27 and Shu carried it the remaining distance off tackle for the score The Keydets tallied again in short order when Ray Taylor of Ashland their aggressive right end rushed through and blocked one of Sharretts' kicks and recovered back of the goal line for a touchdown This time Suh kicked the goal and the Keydets led 13-0 Stung by this sudden and riot-out trend of the game the Cavaliers rame back in the second quarter with a spirited counter-offensive Their tackling picked up and they began spilling Shu and some of the other boys for losses exchanges of punts including a couple of quick kicks by Shu and Male Virginia got the ball on the I 46 With two minutes left in the half the Cavaliers went to the air with vpnseance a short toss Dinwiddle to Gillette was good for five yards placing the ball on the 41 Then Dinwiddie faded back and heaved a diagonal floater to Woody George the end who made a beautiful catch near the side lines cut behind the safety man and legged it tobs the goal line on one of the prettiest plays of the day The pw carried 19 yards and George ran 22 for the score Gillette kicked the point from placement and the score stood 13-7 as the half ended shortly thereafter "Hobby the goal line The play was called back and the Indians penalized 15 yards for holding Two plays later however Della Torre William and Mary quarterback rifled a pass to Twiddy for the first score Twiddy's placement try was low The game was not five minutes older before the Indians scored again Hall intercepted an Eagle pass on the 26-yard stripe and scampered down the sidelines for the second marker He added a point from placement The only dangerous threat made by the Eagles came in the fourth period when the Indian reserves were given their chances In a steady march the American backfield took the ball to the William and Mary seven-yard line only to lose the advantage of five successive first downs when Yeager annihilated the threat by intercepting a short pass Two of the Indians' other tallies were made on short passes and the other pair on line plays Early in the second period after a march from midfield Bunch flipped a pass to Hanna from the 5 for the third tally McGowan's placement was low Four plays after the kick-off William and Mary took the ball on her own 25-yard line and in five plays moved 60 yards to the Eagle 15 Another pass Bunch to Yeager was good far six points but Della try from placement failed As the period neared a close the Eagles perked up a bit Toner passed to Shoop for a 48-yard gain but another pass to the 26 was intercepted Unrelenting the Indians took up the touchdown trail again in the third but an Eagle settled over one of the Indian passes on the three-yard stripe to block the march momentarily However Bunch grabbed the Eagle
