(Martha) McCoy of Mattoon is a patient at Mercy Hospital, Urbana, NEW YORK (UPI) The stock market showed signs of staggering today after two days on the upbeat. Prices of New York Stock Exchange issues were mixed after the first two hours of lackluster trading.

Observers suggested that the market's rebound of the past two days, which has been described as a technical reaction to its prolonged slide, may be approaching its end. A report on the nation's economy by the Commerce Department didn't help either. The department said the index of leading economic indicators in September was up 0.3 per cent, somewhat less than some pulse takers had figured the increase would be. In August the index sported a 1.4 per cent increase, revised upward from the earlier figure. The Dow Jones industrial average was off 0.52 point to 818.09 shortly before noon.

Advances, however, led declines by more than 100 issues, 573 to 468, among the 1,565 crossing the tape. Volume totaled around 4,700,000 shares, well under the 8,870,000 shares traded in the first two hours Thursday.
