Aked was the guest of honor of the Commonwealth club at its weekly luncheon in the Palace hotel yesterday, addressing the members on the subject of the "Church and the Commonwealth." After touching upon the wide range i of the club's interests, which, he said, i recognized all arts and ends from conj victs to clergymen, Dr. Aked pointed out the necessity for the church in modern life and its vitalizing influence, I for which he declared there is no substitute. Cecil Rhodes, he said, an atheist at heart and utterly without sympathy with religion, found in his work in Sr.uth Africa that every church was worth so many troopers of the mounted police, as made for stability of life and order, while 60 years ago Carlyle poured out his eulogy on the preacher, Haying that there was no functionary boarded on the commonwealth who was worth his keep. "How are you going to conserve this newer nation," he the spirit of the living God as the incarnate conscience of a people? The idea that a state rests upon force, as was recently alleged in a campaign which is closed for all time, is totally false. A rests upon confidence; confidence in one another, confidence in the social order and confidence in unselfish service.

Nature in her laboratory has evolved a new man, not the Englishman with a little German added, nor any other combination, but an entirely new type, with an intellect as sturdy as the modern Scot's and as subtle as the ancient Greek's, but the man who of all others needs constant recharging i and revitalizing from the everlasting battery of the rno3t high. Christianity alone holds the key to the solution of the problems presented by a rising proletariat and an awakening democracy." THE SAX FRANCISCO CALL, SUNDAY. NOVEMBER 19, 1911. REUSS LANDTAG TAXES UNMARRIED CITIZENS Larger German States Likely to Follow Example BERLIN, Nov. principality of Reuss, of 75.000 inhabitants, over whom reigns Helnrich XXIV, has suddenly sprung into notoriety. The landtag of this miniature state has passed a bill taxing spinsters and 4 bachelors whose incomes exceed $750 per annum and whose ages exceed 30 years.

The entire German empire is engaged in discussing this extraordinary step, which will be adopted by the larger states should it prove successful in Reuss. For incomes between $750 and $1,500 it is propdsed to add 5 per cent to the existing income tax, and for incomes over this sum 10 per cent. Elaborate Jokes are circulating with regard to the action of the Reuss landtag. One Is that women whom the conventions of society compel to adopt a passive attitude in courtship will now assume the offensive. Another is that the threatened spinsters and bachelors will walk over the.frontier of the diminutive state and live outside the dangerous area.
