20 STEVENSON TABLET MECCA Call's Fourth Red Fire on Pinnacle CALISTQGA -HEAR FAMOUS SPOT ON ML ST. HELENA Newspaper Which Will Help Observe Day Suggests Visitors View Au- thor's Cabin Site MOUNT ST. HELENA JOHN LOUIS CAHILL To St. Helena's glorious mount we came ope Rummer day, Though deeming it an Idle sport, oar hearts In- clined to pray; For there we found the mighty worts of nature undefined; For there we felt a rererent in scenes suh limely wild. Thus standing Us summit bold we looked o'er surrounding.

From Mount Diablo' rugged to ocean shore reminding; O'er- Jlendoclno's woods and streams, o'er liyjfienic fountains, From fair storied clime to Shasta'e xvoundrous mountains. And as we gazed with raptured eyes o'er mount, and hill and plain. A feil of fog came rolling on that hid the nether main. Engulfing all that glorious scene, its gathering folds surround us. Till noon we stood on island lone, a lonely sea around us.

A solemn stillness reigned throughout that calm and placid ocean. Only the eagle hovering gaTe thought to soend or motion. jS E'er long the sun. in splendor bright, pierced. through the shimmering rain, ffhe fog dissolved -in zephyrs light, and all was clear again.

The fourth of July celebration in Calistoga, in which The Call has planned to participate, is set in a region where many points of interest ere to be found. On the road to Mount St. Helena, Just where the visitor leaves the beafen trail to take up the mountain climb. Is the old Silverado mine, where Robert Louis 'Stevenson lived in the early days of his California history and where he evolved 'The Silverado Squatters." No more delightful and Ideal spot can be found than the location upon which Stevenson's cabin was perched. It occupied a shelf fronting to the eastward and looking: over across a green and widespread forest toward distant hills.

Plainly to be seen from i location is a circular depression in the mountains, which has every Indication of having been at some time the crater of a volcano. Mud and lava formations of every kind are on all Bides, and directly in line with this crater like depression, close to Calie- toga, there Is an area where intensely hot water impregnated with sulphur tomes to the surface. The cabin occupied by Stevenson has But upon the spot which It occupied stands a tablet raised by the clubwomen of Napa county in his I honor. This movement was undertaken under the chairmanship of Mrs. P.

F. I Powers of Napa, the site for the monument being deeded by Daniel Patton of St. Helen Inn to three directors from the Napa New Century club, the dedication taking place in the presence of the Sierra club led by Professor Mc- Adie, and today many a worshiper at i Stevenson's serine visits this spot to do honor to this writer of gentle mood; Directly across from the place where this tablet stands is the old Silverado mine. Straight up the cliff and fully exposed to view the vein leads and can be seen today robbed of Its silver bearing ore, looking like a huge scar on the face of the mountain. Mine and tablet are only a few miles from Calistoga, and to those who desire visit this beautiful little Napa valley lowa July 4 The Call suggests that they steal a little time away from the celebration and visit the abode of Stevenson, who there In the solitudes of the forest sought health and paused there briefly to read the message God had writ for him upon the rocks, to listen to the whisperings of wind blown pines and seaward journeying brooks.

He stored the wonder of it all within his. gentle heart, and when he wrote the mystery crept out and hid among his written words, endowing them with little hidden meanings and wistful groping for the solution of life's inner meaning. Before his door were pines and in the shadow of the mountain birds piped, their serenade. Briefly he paused there, then passed onward, journeying to the end. Yet, brief as his stay was, still his memory is marked by a bronze tablet.
