Tom Porter Under Way time out Harley Bowers 16 Top Area Squads Gunning For Crowns The 1965 Tom Porter Invitational Basketball Tournament expected to be better than ever kicks off tomorrow at 4 pm in City Auditorium with 16 of Middle finest teams (eight boys and eight girls) ready to compete for top honors The Tom Porter Tourney This is the year the Tom Porter Invitational Basketball Tournament comes of age When the annual classic was started under the name of the Heart of Georgia (HOG) in 1963 it was figured that it would take three ears to get it firmly established The response to the meet has been tremen-1 dous In 1962 when eight boys teams and four girls outfits competed the tourney attracted more than 4000 fans Last year with eight boys and eight girls it drew well over 6000 This time with the same number of teams but with a four-day format instead of three attendance is expected to approach the 10000 mark While this schedule of four first-round games one day and another four the next day is certain to attract more fans than last eight-game first day program this the only i attendant reason ice is expected to be higher There is also strong support for Taylor County Norman club strengthen this year when Butler and Reynolds consolidated is 13-2 with tee lone losses being to unbeaten Perry by two points and to Yatesville by six However Taylor has little height while Adrian has two fine 6-5 performers and another 6-3 Warner Robins stands before Taylor as a barrier even more formidable than Willingham offers Adrian The Demons will be taller and now riding a four-game winning streak In tee bottom bracket nobody Is counting out Lanier After a slow start tee Poets have now won three straight and always been tough in this tournament The Poets will have a height advantage over Cochran and will also be on their home floor (See PORTER on Page 14) Girls Rosters Stratford Is seen by many WILCOX: Jin Worley S-11 Mnlori CharMta Harvey S-10 lunlor) Barton throughout the entire middle Georgia area in the tournament has grown tremendously and games this year will draw fans from many neighbor-mg towns whether they have a team competing or not just come to see good basketball Another plus factor is the first appearance in the tournament of the Warner Robins boys played the last two years in the Perry tournament and with their girls entered here it produced a split crowd The boys switched tournaments this year which should be a big help at the gate THE WARNER ROBINS Demons will make their debut in the Tom Porter Invitational Basketball Tournament this week at City Auditorium They are front row from left Jim Wall Joe Daniel Dennis Wells and Mike Briggs second row Jerry Owens Donald Davidson Wayne McConnell and Lee McKinley third row Larry Stokes Charlie Bob West Freddie Reynolds and Kenny Thompson top row Coach Lamar Deavers assistant coach Donald Lord Stanley Blaxton and Emmett Smith (Staff Photo by Wallace Reid) boys coached by Henry Middlebrooks will be gunning for their third straight tourney title having won in 1963 over Dublin and 1964 over Willingham when the meet was called the Heart of Georgia There will be a new champion in the girls' division Butler wen it in 1964 beating out the defending titlist Warner Robins but Norman sextet depleted by graduation passed up an opportunity to defend the title this year four-game program begins with a game at 4 pm between Mary Persons of Forsyte and Wilcox of Rochelle Then comes a contest at 5:30 between Willingham ef Macon and Adrien At 7:00 the Cochran and Northaido girls will collide and at 3:30 the Warner Robins and Taylor County boys will meat The first round will be Completed Tuesday with the Jones County and Crawford County girls tangling at 4 pm the Northside and Stratford boys at 5:30 tee Warner Robins and Lee girls at 7 and tee Lanier and Cochran boys at 8:30 The semifinals will be played Wednesday also starting at pm with tee Thursday finals scheduled at 7 and 8:30 There are no real favorites in the tourney Adrian comes in with tee best record in tee bov's division 11-0 but the smaller classification schools have fared so poorly in previous Tom Porter tournaments there is a hesitancy to make them the favorites Generally the teams from the smaller schools havo boon victims of "stagefrlght" In the past If Adrian overcomes this and gets by a tough although winloss Willingham team In the first round Coach John club could go on to victory Big Schools vs Boys Rosters COCHRAN: Tony Folr 51 oenlori Danny Hinton 55 lunlor Tony Rosier San Diego Char-gera coach Sid Gillman because ho was not a championship quarterback leads the Buffalo Bills into Balboa Stadium Saturday as they try to retain their American Football League championship Kemp guided the Bills to a 20-7 victory over the Chargers In Buffalo last year-but things have changed in the interim All-league fullback Cookie Gilchrist has been traded away and the running attack has averaged only 92 yards a game Featured pass receivers Elbert Dubenlon and Glenn Bass were injured early in the season and were replaced by Bo Roberson and Charlie Ferguson San Diego on the other hand Is in better shape than last year when all-league flanker Lance Alworth missed the game fullback Keith Lincoln was injured in the first quarter and quarterback Robin Rote was playing with a bad arm The Chargers despite losing Lincoln for half the season dominated the league in both offense and defense this year John Hadl replaced Rote at quarterback and led the league in passing wpaul Lowe set a league rushing record and Alworth gained 1602 yards catching passes and scored 14 touchdowns All are healthy In league action this year the Chargers ripped the Bills 34-3 in Buffalo and then were tied 20-20 in San Diego because of several freak occurrences The Chargers outgained the Bills 358 to 231 but were hampered by fumbles dropped passes and a costly errant snap from center There are many interesting aspects to the Tom Porter Tournament but the battle between the Class AAA schools and those from lower classifications is the most appealing to us In the boys division there are four AAA outfits Lanier Willingham Warner Robins and Norths ide and four from other classifications Class A Cochran and Class Stratford Taylor County and Adrian The luck of the draw pitted the big schools against the small outfits in the first round with Lanier meeting1 Cochran' Willingham playing Adrian Warner Robins tackling Taylor County and Northside going against Stratford aophomort) past two years their case been strengthened by the results of play here The Class AAA teams have pretty well dominated things with Lanier winning both meets and Willingham going to the finals last year 5 Willingham has found the tournament to be a real bonanza Each year the Rams go into the Christmas meet with a miserable record then bum up the hardwood at the expense of the lower classification clubs This time the winless aconites take on unbeaten Adrian in the first game and the visitors had better come prepared for a real battle SPORTS (Hf IHarmt Gfclfgraplj attb Nmm SUNDAY (See PACKERS Page 14) WITH UP TO YU TO RIF ATI cm enuy flw to sum your -f If one went by the records alone all four of the Class AAA teams would lose in the first round The smart money though favors the bigger schools to at least break even and it be surprising if they did even better than that Many fans may not believe it but there is a difference in the type of basketball played in the smaller school and in the bigger ones The Class AAA clubs put a lot more stress on defense and they work to perfect file shuffle the press and other intricate maneuvers The smaller outfits generally shoot better but they are often baffled by the smoother techniques of the AAA quintets It may not be that way this year but it has been in the past This necessarily so though in girls basketball Classifications mean little or nothing here In file two tournaments held so far Class AAA Warner Robins was vetorious one year and Class Butler the next There has been little difference between the various classes and this pattern is expected to continue this time' The three Class AAA schools in the girls division Warner Robns Northside and Lee all wound up in the same bracket along with Class A Cochran Mary Persons and Jones County Class and Crawford County and Wilcox Class are in the other side of the draw Unless Cochran survives against the AAA schools the finals will match a big school against one of the smaller ones As far as we are concerned it is more difficult to pick probable winners this year than ever before Every team in both divisions has a chance and we doubt that there will be a one-sided game Most will be settled by a 10-point margin or less Which is basketball at its best right and Wally end zone which DESPITE THE RAIN and snow in Green Bay this week Lambeau Field
