several months connected with The Herald office left on Wednesdav last for Ezelj and informed us that he would make an cfiort to secure a district school to teach in Morgan county He is a young man of more than average intellect a good scholar good manners and devout mien and we doubt not will prove a successful pedagogue should he be so fortunate as to secure a school He has the good wishes of The Herald in his new venture and the expressed wish of many acquaintances here that he may do well Prof John Jay Dickey of Jackson high school was in town last Friday night a guest of the Pieratt House ne was en route home from Lexington whither he had been in attendance at the State teachers institute and State teachers association He secured about 500 books from the following places and they will be added to the Jackson Academy library which will now aggregate about 1000 volumes Flemiugsburg 200 volumes Carlisle 135 vols Millers burg 75 vols and Lexington 150 besides small contributions The chairman of the Wolfe count democratic committee having previously notified the district democratic committee a meeting was held at the court house in Campton on Saturday the 25th inst and a primary election ordered to be held on Saturday the 12th day of September 1885 for the purpose of nominating democratic candidates for the offices of county judge circuit and county clerk county attorney EASTERN KENTUCKY COUNTIES- NEWS BY Reported by Special Correspondents from All Points In the Mountains MORGAN COUNTY Maytowx July 27 The people of this part of Morgan county are excited about the proposed taxation of 200000 to build a railroad through this county Petitions are being circulated asking the magistrates of the county to vote down the proposition They claim that a similar taxation was laid in Montgomery county and in consequence thereof the people have suffered in a financial point of view So far as your correspondent can learn the people are in favor of a railroad but are opposed to such an enormous taxation As to the necessity for the taxation this deponent suith not but would respectfully remiud the people of old Morgan that iftfieyever expect to see the iron horse snorting through their fertile valleys they will be necssitated to donate liberally The recent troubles here between the Culbertsons and Sextons has not been settled and from present indications it will doubtless be some time before it is It is remembered that these parties have been having trouble with each other for about 8ix months Last week John Culberuon went to the houne of ia Sexton called his son Brack to the door aud told him that he was going to shoot him whereupon he fired his heretofore trusty rifles but fortunately missed young Sexton The parties have ail been arrested aud will have their trial here to morrow From all reports both parties are armed to the teeth and it is feared that the eutLis aotyet Ajrangeinents are being made to run a ten months school of a high grade at this Slace This is certainly a move in the right irection Teachers who are competent in particular will have the school in charce Now let the people of Wolfe and Morgan counties give this enterprise the aid it deserves in a substantial way and we will guarantee that we will have a school second to nbne in Eastern Kentucky The sad news of the death of Willie Murphy of Grassy Creek was received here late yesterday evening Willie was an upright young man who was loved and respected by all who knew him That death loves a shining mark was verified in this case Placing a flower upon his grief stricken family and say to them Your loss is his eternal gain The family circle is broken but may it be reunited where parting shall be no more The association of regular Baptist will convene serious and probably fatal wound in the left side near bis heart Combs in the execution of the law had a few weeks ago arrested Hardwick and committed him to jail and if this is not what led to the cutting the cause is unknown Last Sunday Hardwick joined the -church and gave Combs his hand in apparent friendship and on the next day at the court house very unexpectedly to Combs or anyone else stepped up to himand thrust his lcnife into his side and ill attempting to catch the knife Combs received a bad wound on his hand Hard wick then attempted to escape but was followed and brought back
