countv to Miss Josephine NicielL Bev Fallen ting They have the nest wishes oi tneir many friends in Hazel Green The Presbyterian Church at this place will soon he ready for service- The lumber for the wainscoting has been purchased and work begun The friends of the church at aB points haveheen appealed to for assistance towards furnishing seats Our Spencer correspondent writes that Amanda Brown colored who some three weeks since cut and killed Besa BigstalF colored at a negro festival was on Saturday last -sentenced hy the Montgomery Circuit Court to the penitentiary for three years This makes six sent up this term During a conversation in which several were engaged last Sunday Hon Godsey quoted A young man is not far from ruin when he can say without blushing I care not what others think of mc It would be well for us all to treasure in our memory this saying Boys remember it Henry Wilson of this place while putting up a piece of post and rail fence one -day last week got the index and middle fin gera of the right hand caught in the top mortise of a post and the panel falling came near breaking both fingers As it was they are badly lacerated and he will lose the nails of them Bev Barney BlankensKip haveng ail--ed to put in an appearance at the Pines on Sundav last the duty of organizing a Sunday school at that place devolved upon Jas A- McCiain a Bible student of Bichmond College who is home for a short time on a vacation and it is is said that his work was Terfect in all its details There will be three funerals preached on the first Sunday in July at the new upon whose case the jury failed to agj ee at the April term was tried and received a sentence of seven years in the penitentiary John Walters charged with shooting with intent to kUl ras acquitted we do not have better roads for strangers to travel over we need never expect people to come here even if we had a old mine and the people should rise in leir might and demand of the authorities that they be put in condition especially the one from here to BothwcH Ae hope our citizens wiU stir up all officials -who have the roads in charge and see that tixe next grand jury does its duty little son of Mrs Dick Gibbe living oa the dry ridge about 16 miles from this place in Menifee county fell from a tree last Wednesday evening and broke his thigh He fell a distance of 40 measured feet and Dr B- Gardner of this place who was called to see him says he received internal injuries which renders his recovery exceedingly doubtfuL Dr Gardner says the fracture of the hone was a very had one He set the Bmb and left the little sufferer doing as weB as could be jexpected under the circumstances Dr Mason Jbtash one of our most prominent physicians and a good citizen generally is now confined to his room with inflammaiorv sore eyesbis suffering being almost anbearable Indeed it is feared that he mav lose his sight but we hope these fears are unfounded The good people of Hazel Green should site that he receives good attention and remember that he has never been called tovist the tick that he did not go Yea he has treated them without jBoaev and without price Liove lay zicjji t3er as thyself Tvho spent a week in Mt Sterling with relatives and friends has returned home Misses Maggie and Kate Amyx passed through town yesterday en route home for a two weeks visit Green Trimble Jr and Clarence Turner both of Mt Sterling are visiting friends and relatives at this place Our better seven eighths will leave on Thursday for a visit to friends and relatives in ML Sterling and Lexington Judge GB Swango has returned home having at Louisville abandoned the idea of going to Hot Springs until fall Mr and Mrs Corder who were visiting at Nathan and John Days last week have returned to Hazel Green and are visiting Taylor Day Jerrv Cockrill and family of Mt Sterling Miss Jennie Sharp of Bourbon and Miss Lizzie Otfbome of Morgan county are visiting Swango spring Bev IL Fallen and wife spent Sat urdav and Sunday in Hazel Green the guest of Wl Trimble It being his regular appointment he preached morning and evening to good congregations Mt Sterling County Court Mt Sterling Gazette There was a slim crowd in town the smallest we believe we have ever seen on court day and business generally was very dull There was a complaint on all sides among merchants and stock dealers The rain on Sunday night probably kept a great many people at nome as Monday was a splendid tobacco season as they term it And again the fact of Circuit Court being in session probably kept a great many farnv ers out of town who have an aversion to serving on juries There is no doubt but there is a general business depression all over the country and we cannot hope to escape from it TV Wilson auctioneer report about 500 head of cattle on the market mostly rough mountain stock Yearlings brought from to 12 2-year-olds from 15 to 23 15 yearling mules brought 4050 per head About 50 plug horses on the market bringing from 30 to 50 There were no good horses put up There were 400 or 500 sheep on the market but none sold publicly They were held at 150 to 2 per head The citizens of this place were treated to a rare musical melange on Thursday night last by Bev Mickel as organist and David Morse as violinist The affair was an impromptu one for a select party of Mrs Herndous friends but the night being delightful and the window hoisted the people on the outside were partakers of the enjoyable music as well as those in the house it is to be hoped that Messrs Mick el and Morse will repeat the programme often during the summer months and as an inducement to do so we would suggest that the vocal talent of the town also be brought into requisition and a concert given the benefits accruing from it to go to the several churches equally Let some enterprising lady go to work and get up the concert The price of admission could be placed at a figure which would enable all to attend and the fund thus raised though small would help all the churches just that much We will appoint Mrs Nannie Herndon to secure the talent and she in turn may call into requisition a lady of each of the churches to assist her Let us have the concert by all means and have it now while the nights arc beautiful And one thing more dont allow auv dead heads to enter therein Col Day of Daysborough left for Hazard last Friday morning where he is engaged in an extensive land suit Parties wishing to take The Herald can pay Col Day the subscription 100 and give him their names We sincerely hope the good people of that section will assist in helping along The Heeald and if they subscribe liberallv thev mav be assured that thev will always have an advocate in it for any thing they wish advanced I hey should therefore walk up and pay theirdollar and take for one year the paper of all others which is doing most for them That paper is The Herald and no mistake and when we say it is the cheapest county paper in the State of Kentucky we believe we only voice the opinion of both the press and the public ot this Commonwealth What about a mail service sumes four weeks in carrying a that con- letter oo miles Clevelands administration is proving an admirable one but that of Vilas postmaster general is Vilas the Star Boute Dor sey service We want a line established from this place to Hindinan in Knott county and if we had a regular mail route the chances are that the people of that county could be rescued from barbarism The route should run up Bed Biver to Bouseau and thence on to Hindman and should be at least tri weekly When people pay a government to do a service they demand that the government shall perform it and in their name we demand it In short if Vilas cant have it done properly we will see Cleveland and get some one in the place who is not so Vilas he is The surveyors on the State road between Hazel Green and Maytown are respectfully requested to read the foUowing from theBevised Statutes Sec 42 of article 1 chapter 94 reads When the surveyor of a public road shall fail to perform his duty he shall be fined not less than 10 nor more than 15 recoverable by indictment before a grand jury The special term of AVolfe Circuit Court will commence on the 2nd Monday in July and those who have the supervision of roads will do well to take the hint contained in the above or they may hear something drop weighing about what fifteen silver dollars would tip the scales at We must have better roads and we hope those men who have been appointed to Keep them in repair will attend to the matter at once Does advertising pay Well we should smile A Childers of Maytown put an advertisement in THE HEEAli a short time since and after the first issue got some customers from the other side of Bed Biver from a section never before dealing in May town who purchased a large bill of goods from him and told him that they saw the advertisement in The Herald but hardly believed that goods could be sold so cheap Dick convinced them that such was a fact however and they went home determined never more to be without their county paper Merchants throughout the mountains should follow Dicks example sell goods cheap and let the people know it through The Hekald which goes into more households than any paper ever did before A young man living on Gillmore came to town last Thursday and after making some purchases and arriving at home discovered that he had lost his pocket book He returned to Hazel Green ana found it all right The same day a young lady of this place lost her pocket book while out shopping Inasmuch as the two have for some time been recognized as sweethearts this was a remarkable coincidence and plainly showed that their thoughts were elsewhere than on their pocket books In each case their thoughts were of the absent one and to prevent a like catastrophe it has been suggested that they marry and look out for one common interest An effort will be made by the citizens between here and Boihwell to have a post office estabhthed at that place It would be to the interest and for the good of the service and would greatly enhance our mail facilities With the established stage line which in aU probability will carry the mail BothweU should be the distributing office for this section As the case now stands the mail is put off tiie cars at Cornwell one mile below and the stage would be under the necessity of going two miles extra every day to get the mail then return to Bothwell and get waiting passengers By aB means let us have the postrolhce at Jiotnwell ana tnat too right speedily Breens Liniment removes knots and all enlargements on horses or other stock Ko care no pay Hold by Day 2fv KfH COBBESPOKDENOE EASTERN KENTUCKY
