just now creating great excitement in Hazel Green He had noticed for a long time that water oozed up through the ground at a certain point and thinking he might dig and discover its source and thereby get an abundance of stock water the field being used as a pasture he dug down throagh solid clay earth to the depth of about 8 feet when he discovered leaves and trash whieh struck him as being very remarkable Eemoving them he discovered a perfectly formed basin about 14 inches square bv IS deep in a a solid bed of soap stone which is said to be a fine specimen The marks of the instrument with which it was chisseled out are plainly visible The question is who dug the spring Local history of the place goes back 100 years and such a thing as a spring was never known in the locality The water supply to the basin is very meager and the opinion prevails that it must have been dug by some pre historic race to secure the water for its medicinal virtues The water has a very Eleasant taste and is said by those who aue tasted of it among them Trimble of ML Sterling to be a superior article magnesia If this be the case Mr Lacy has struck it rich and it will be a boom for Ha zel Green We have forwarded a bottle of it to Prof Bobt Peter state analytical chemist to obtain his analysis of it and will then tell our readers more about it Jlr Lacy has concluded to leave the spring just as he found it that visitors to Hazel Green may see it and give their theory as to who dug of the surroundings go back 100 and those 7 people say that there were then trees over the spot of at least 100 paid relatives a flying visit near the mouth of Blackwater last week We found the jpeople in that neck of the woods guict and in a prosperous condition There is one thine we notice is greatly needed in that section and that is a post office We inquired of several persons if they were taking The Herald and they informed us that they were not from the fact that they were so far from a post office that they could not get their paper in any reasonable time without going a distance of 8 to 12 miles which is too expensive on them There has gone up a new store in that section under the firm name of McGuire Goodpaster and that would be a very suitable place for a post office which would be a great convenience to the people of that neighborhood and would be highly appreciated by them We are confident that quite a number of them will take The Hak ald when they get a post office at that place On The Wing Grassy Creek June 15 Eli Pieratt and wife of Ezel were visiting relatives at this before women children and men all fighting Stump iWh Signs and Wonders en will signs ana wonders cease 7 Not till the destroying angel shall cut the thread of time and the heavens be rolled together as a scroll Not a day passes but we see good and bad signs as the following will show Its a good sicn to have a man enter your office with a friendly greeting Heres 1 to pay for The Herald Its a bad Bign to hear a man say I am too poor to take a paper Ten to one he carries home a jug of red eye that costs him atlollar Its a good sign to see a man do a deed of charity to his fellowman Its a bad sign to hear him boasting of it Its a good sign to see the color of health in a mans face Its a bad sign to see it all concentrated in his nose Its a good sign to see an honest man wear in old clothes Its aibad sign to see folks filling holes in their windows it a good sign to see a man wijie perspiration from his brow Its a bad sign to see him wipe his mouth us he comes out of a saloon Its a good sign to see a lady dressed with taste and neatness Its a bad sign to see her husband sued for her feathers and foolery gems and Jewelry Its a good sign to see a man or lady advertise in Tue Herald It would be a bad sign to see the sheriff do their advertising for them Take Your County Paper Louisville Post The county paper is nearer to the people than the city paper it speaks of home affairs it upholds and advances home interest it makes known home wants and introduces to the public home men and tlieir capacity for useful work It deserves the sympathy and hearty support of home people and the public spirited men of the section in which it circulates There is no agency among men capable of doing so much good in temporal affairs as well as a well edited and neatly printed paper The state itself should favor the county newspapers as much as it can without detriment to the public interests and every man interested to any extent in the advancement of the county and section in which it is published should aid the county paper in every way possible and do so on the ground of public interest No man can edit a paper and please all men If he attempts so foolish a thing he will prove a failure and for this reason every editor must be allowed to cherish and promulgate his own ideas as well as to give publicity to the ideas concerning public affairs No county ever lost a dime and hundreds of them have been greatly advanced by heartily supporting a paper We Breathitt County rLexintrton Gazttel have heard a great deal about the killings and other disorders of Breathitt county but there is a quiet but earnest work lor tne retormation and civilization ot those Ecople going on of which the general public nows but little which in time will produce results of the most gratifying nature Meeting our old friend Eev Wm Cooper who islaboring as a missionary in connection with the Presbyterian church in that interesting field we learned these things that greatly interested us He says that Breath itt is the larcest countv in the state of Ken tucky and that there is not a building in the county dedicated to religious purposes To supply this great need Mr Cooper is now engaged in an effort to build a church of which the foundation is laid and the lumber obtained and he hopes by the aid of Christian people in more favored localities to complete the work by winter The Southern Bivuoac for June has been received It is a truly southern magazine filled with choicest reading throughout The current number contains among some 15 other well written articles Gen
