Moultrie when the Poets seemed to know exactly hat was coming Cotton Harrison is as good a coach today as he was In 1953 ie has 15 years of high school coaching under his belt No IL don't Irt us start blaming the coaches for tho losses You pat them on the back when Lanier wins Let's be 'fair Coach Wally Butts spoke no truer words the other night at the Macon Touchdown Club when he said is the boys who get the lob dene not the coaches" The same applies to high school junior high grammar school or sandot It is the players not only in football but in any other sport that make the coach or manager not the coach who makes the players Just check on this and see If you agree Take such managers as Casey Stengel Leo Durocher Charley Grimm Marty Marion and then glance over some of the top football coaches who when they had the horses were on top but when they came up with they had to hunt new Jobs not because they lost their skill as coaches but have the athletes What Lanier needs is not new Sports Editor ATLANTA Oct Although the skies were overcast the sun was shining here today in Grant Field for a large and determined crew of War Eagles from the Plains of Auburn The sun was shining because a crew of Tigers led by Howell Tubbs an underrated quarterback and Jimmy Phillips a sensational sophomore end whipped unbeaten Georgia Tech 14-12 to settle a score of 14 years' standing While Bobby Dodd coach of Georgia Tech has talked of extra points and punting and kicking led and of the breaks the Tigers by Ralph (Shugl Jordan came into his own back yard and beat him at his own game two brilliantly performing outfits of football men and the outfit from the Plains over at Auburn Alabama was the better outfit Phillips a sophomore end from Alexander City Alabama was on the receiving end of passes of seven 12 and 20 yards which meant the difference between the rushing of the Yellow Jackets and the ground gaining of the Tigers On two diferent occasions when highly-regarded extra points might have been the difference between victory defeat or tie the Yellow Jackets were unable to boot the pigskin between the uprights for the one-point counters And in the long run It meant I with a 10-yard run Tarlc-ton caught one for 17 on the last play of the fist game Orr got in the open and Young hit him for 11 and a first down on the 29 Tarleton wound himself open down the middle and Young lofted the ball to him and the Atlanta back went over for the second marker Joe Comfort's place-kick was good and with 44 seconds gone in the second period the Bulldogs led 134) FSU went 78 for its second period score In a drive that actually went 108 yards if you take into consideration two 15-yard FSU penalties The key play was Len Swanic's pass to Hamilton Bisbee who slipped behind the Georgia safety man which went 43 yean Two running plays got the ball to the Georgia 12 to set the stage for Swanic's snaked-rcverge sroiind right and for the tally William Proctor kicked the extra they proved the difference giving Auburn what looks now like a stranglehold on the SEC championship Auburn scored first late In the arda wide the final 7 yards while Childress faked beautifully up the middle Tech scored in the second period on a 66 yard march with Wade Mitchell sneaking the final inches but Mitchell's conversion was wide Just after the half Tech took a temporary lead when George Volkert burst around left end and raced 59 yards to score A bad snap prevented try for this conversion But Auburn which had not whipped Tech since 1940 would not be denied this day and barrelled to win on Tubbs' passing Phillips a worthy successor to the great Jim Pyburn was Just as outstanding defensively as he was on offense He continually bar-rassed Tech's runners Jerry EI-licott another fine end also did a great two-way Job He caught a 32-yard pass in Auburn's final touchdown drive Bob Scarborough who alternated between guard and center was another outstanding Auburn linesman Tubbs called a beautiful game mixing his passes with the driving smashes of Childress and the deceptive slants of Fob James' Swanic for a 9 yard loss and the march ended on Georgia's 22 Giorgla took over and with
