Detroit' have won a game and losl the western division of where Green Bay reigns with four straight triumpl Usually when brother meets brother and husband and wife or sister and brother get to jumping at each others throats there is no telling what will happen But not so when the two St Louis baseball teams met in the World Series The meek manner in which these two teams battled each other makes St Louis eligible for a place with Philadelphia as a city of brotherly love This seems to be the end When two baseball teams from the same town can play with the world's championship at stake and leave the ozone as pure as snow everything has happened Instead of the usual inter-city rivalry between the two clubs and the issuing of bulletins stating what would happen the players and managers were meek as lambs The umpires were the most surprised of all at this atmosphere of docility After calling two or three close ones and not getting a squawk they must have settled back and really enjoyed this series It is doubtful if there ever before was a series staged without the sign of a squabble between the rival managers players or between the players managers or umpires The only yelling that was done in this series was the hawking of the peanuts and drink vendors Of course the quality of baseball played and whether a layer is putting all he has on the ball is not judged by his ckering but nevertheless it was so quite and peaceful in St Louis during the series that the major leagues should present both teams with a plaque or something HOPE THIS EXPLAINS TIIE PLAY The Monday morning quarterbacks in Macon have had a great deal to say about the forward pass interception play that came up in the Lanier-Columbus game I missed this game being in Athens for the Presbyterian-Georgia game so cannot give my version of the play I have talked with Ned Barbre the field judge in that game and the official that called the play and here is ruling Hope it will clear up matters The penalty inflicted on Lanier after the interception was on a player who illegally used his hands in attempting 0 keep the Columbus man away from Billy Henderson who lad intercepted the pass As the illegal use of hands occurred after Lanier had gained possession of the ball the penalty was correct Fifteen yards from the spot of the foul first and ten Ned further commented that Cotton Harrison Lanier ine coach had received permission to come on the field 9 WGA PUTS ON FREE BARBECUE Now we are getting some place The Macon Golf in an sent out by Carl Beard presi-lent says that the association will put Johnny Lamb lined up his weekly show for the Macon auditorium Wednesday night The Segura-Curtis rift grew out of an anticlimatic battle between the pair as they climbed from the ring after Jack and his younger brother had been declared victors over Segura and Floyd Byrd in a tag team bout on last Wednesday's card The ringside horse play was promptly halted by city police who carried the warriors to the police barracks where each obtained freedom only after $11 bond was posted on charges of disorderly conduct To settle the dispute in a lawful fashion Promoter Lamb has paired off the two in the main event this week on his light-heavy card Fred Caronl ex-Boston strong boy who once wrestled bears in the Ringling Brothers Barn urn and Bailey circus has been mentioned as a member of the highest score a Notre Dame team had amassed since a Knute Rockne-coached eleven beat little Haskell 73-0 After the first five minutes of play there never was a doubt who would win The question was by how much In the opening period Notre Dame scored once In the second period they scored four times In the third once and in the fourth four more Bob Kelley the starry back was kept In one long enough to score while Frank Dancewicz saw sufficient action to make a pair of touchdowns Once or twice during the game Dartmouth made spirited bids but it appeared that they came only while Notre Dame was relaxing before starting a new touchdown march The outstanding run of the game came in the final period when chunky Nunzio Marino normally one of the leaser lights galloped 67 yards behind excellent blocking to score Notre Dame's poorest showing was in the tries for points after touchdowna Only four were completed of which George Terlep accounted for three Ed Clashy converted once Both of these backs scored touchdowna The statistics tell the sloiy Notre Dame made 19 first downs to six and gained 438 yards by rushing to Dartmouth's 54 Future Bright to Layden For Pro Grid Loop NASHVILLE Tenn Oct 14 UPJ Elmer Layden today predicted a great postwar future for a proposed Southern professional football league Here to attend the Green Bay-Philadelphia game the commissioner of the National Professional Football league said such a league in the South would lead ultimately to a player-exchange system similar to that prevailing in baseball The proposed Southern pro football league is being considered by Southern Association baseball owners professional football supplements the college Layden said because the South has a great football heritage upon which to build a professional league I third go round here last night by taking Eastman High 41 to 0 The Irishmen romped almost at will up and down the field and at end of the half Dorrell Smalley and Bill Hurricane backs had rolled up to total of 20 points The Hurricane's siring went in during the second with Smalley as a holdover from the varsity and the Irish again piled up a heavy core this time 21 points Runs by Smalley James Crabb Ikey Stinson and Don Scarboro The latter also a varsity holdover featured the period with Smalley Stinson and Scarboro doing the tallying Six Persons Suspended By Racing Commission CHARLESTON Va Oct 14 UP Six persons who appeared before the state racing commission yesterday were under indefinite suspensions today as the result of an investigation of a race at Wheeling Downs during the fall meet Secretary Beverly Broun reported that Lt Taylor a trainer-owner was exonerated of charges of collusion in the victory of Winsome Lassie at the track last Sept 9 The six persons suspended Broun reported were Jockies Frankie Meyer Wilson Arnold Carter Charles Par-rish and Iva Mae Parris and Mason The commission overruled a recommendation by the track stewards that licenses be revoked for one year Two Heaves By Broyles Add Scores Ritter Bowen Toss One Each By SAM GLASSMAN GRANT FIELD ATLANTA Oct 14 Georgia Tech rolled out a trio of aerial gunners here this afternoon that sent a pack of stubborn Auburn Tigers into a 27 to 0 nose-dive before approximately 20000 spectators Frank Broyles uncorked two of the touchdown strikes while Allen Dinky Bowen and Tex Ritter accounted for one apiece The manner in which George Mathews Jim Do rough and Charlie Murdock plucked the football out of the air made one think of big league outfielders hauling down one handed jumping stabs Particularly was the catch by Mathews of Ritter's toss for the second touchdown in the fourth quarter a honey George a Columbus lad leaped high in the air stopped the ball with one hand juggled it down as he fell and then gathered it to his bosom and came down on his back in the end zone For three quarters the battle was as hard fought as any that has been played on Grant Field in quite a spell The Auburn line was clearly outcharging the Tech linesmen throughout the first half and not until the final period got under way was the Georgia Tech auperior reserve strength able to make any difference 1 That Georgia Tech was able to gain only 49 yards in rushing shows how the two lines were playing Auburn was able to get 72 with first downs being Georgia Tech 10 and the Tigers 17 The passing records of both teams were about equal but Tech made the best of the opportunity Three Auburn linesmen Ralph Hoffman a guard from Fairhope Ala Denvard Snell a tackle from Dothan Ala and Tex Warrington center from Dover Del stood out Herbert Hawkins Auburn wing-back Chuck Sanders and Curtis Kuykendall who alternated at wingback for Auburn played stellar ball The Yellow Jackets' Tex Ritter George Mathews Frank Broyles and Dinky Bowen took the limelight in the backfield with Bowen adding to his great performance in the Clemson game by his brilliant play and his getting three out of four placekicks for extra points Maurice Furchgott Bill Chambers Jim Dorough and Joe Daniels did the best work in the Tech line FIRST SCORE Both teams felt each other out in the first quarter with the Auburn line holding down Tech's running attack After an exchange of punts Bowen brought back Harold Watkins' punt to Auburns 28 Broyles got seven through right guard and then Bowen pitched his first strike to Dorough who had just been sent back into the game Jim slipped down the east side line and passed the Auburn safety man Kuykendall and grabbed toss for the first marker Bowen made the placement good This was all the scoring for the first half Auburn had outplayed Tech all the way First downs were at the half Auburn 10 Tech 2 Auburn came back strong in the third quarter and started right down the field after the kickoff Kuykendall brought kickoff from his 11 to 44 and was almost loose Luke Bowen Tech guard brought him down Auburn marched down to the Tech 16 where a mlxup in signala caused the ball to fall loose and Tech recovered This stopped the most dangerous scoring threat Auburn had made second score started in the third quarter and finished on the first play of the fourth quarter Bowen returned Watkins' punt to Auburns 38 After an incom-ileted pass Broyles passed to laniels on 23 Another pass Bowen to Castleberry carried to Auburn's 16 Broyles got to the nine going off right tackle but fumbled and Hoffman of Auburn recovered On the first play play Hawkins of Auburn fumbled and Charley Nixon Tech fullback recovered on Auburn's six and then Broyles fumbled again but this time Mathews recovered on 10 The third quarter ended here The Auburn line was drawn in as though to stop a running play as Coach Alexander has sent in Billy Williams at fullback but instead Broyles tossed to Dorough on a short pass to the flat and Dorough scampered to the score Bowen's placekick was wide A pass interception led to the third score Williams picked off a pass on Tech's 25 and went to Auburn's 41 before being downed liter passed to Dorough for 15 yards to Auburn's 26 and after an Auburn penalty of 5 yards Ritter threw to Mathews who made the fine catch mentioned above Bowen kicked goal Tech's last marker came on the end of a recovered Auburn fumble On Auburn's 40 and one running play and two passes ended the scoring The final pass play was a hidden ball by Broyles who held the ball behind his back as though to give to Mathews but instead held and passed to Charles Murdock in the end zone for the score The touchdown pass covered 11 yards Bowen
