The all-steel fabricated component 12 feet in diameter and about 25-30 feet wide was made by Roberts Iron Works or RIWCO, at 2330 Columbus for STS HydroPower Ltd.

The hydro-electric component made by RIWCO is believed to be the largest ever manufactured in Springfield, according to Ken Brown of STS. Brown, sales manager at the Springfield engineering company involved with turbine designs and manufacture, described the component as a spiral case for a four-megawatt hydro-electric project on the Appomattox River near Petersburg, Va. will be imbedded in the power house there and will direct the water flow into a turbine runner, connected 1 to a generator, to produce electricity," Brown said. He said energy produced will be sold directly to the Virginia Electric Power Co. The unit.

manufactured at a cost of about $150,000, was built by four employees at RIWCO working six months, according to Brown. He said the Virginia operation is expected to start up sometime later this year. It will be STS HydroPower's 11th hydro-electric plant in the United States. The unit will be dismantled and shipped by truck in three sections to Virginia where it will be reassembled, Brown said. Shipment is expected to be made in early May.

The American-owned and American-based STS HydroPower, founded 10 years ago, is headquartered in Northbrook. Ill. The company's Springfield operation, located at 300 E. Auburn began about seven years ago, Brown said. BRIEFLY ASSOCIATED PRESS IBM shareholders want some answers TAMPA.

Fla. Angry IBM shareholders unleashed a torrent of pent-up frustration over the company's decline at new chairman Louis V. Gerstner who promised to revive the computer maker but asked for patience. In just his 18th workday at IBM, Gerstner on Monday tried to focus on a broad outline of goals but instead heard impassioned calls for the ouster of the company's board of directors that were greeted with loud applause. Home sales fall WASHINGTON Sales of previously owned homes slipped 2.9 percent in March as severe weather froze housing activity in much of the nation.

a real estate trade group reported. The National Association of Realtors said Monday that sales of existing single-family homes totaled 3.36 million at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, down from 3.46 million in February and 3.78 million in January. Sales fell in every region except the Midwest. Changes are coming GREENSBORO, N.C. UAW arming for fights over wages, security Associated Press DETROIT The UAW wants wage increases and better job security protection from the Big Three automakers this summer and will fight and strike if necessary to keep current benefits, union president Owen Bieber said Monday. Battered and weakened in a dozen years of Republican presidential policies, the United Auto Workers survived and is ready to battle again if it must, Bieber told 2,000 delegates attending the UAW's collective bargaining conference.

are not without scars and bruises," he said. "But our brains and our muscle and our spirit are intact." The election of President Clinton reduced anti-union fervor in the White House, but the UAW is watching to see if Clinton will deliver on promises to sign legislation preventing companies from permanently replacing strikers and to rework the pending North American Free Trade Agreement. Delegates began debating a single 138- page resolution incorporating more than 600 proposals from locals throughout the country. A single vote on the resolution is scheduled Wednesday. Assuming the resolution is adopted, it will guide bargainers for this summer's auto talks and negotiations over the next three years for UAW-represented employees in aerospace, farm equipment and technical, office and professional fields.

The bargaining focus will be to build on existing job and income security, health care and pensions. The resolution calls for eliminating limits on pay for laid-off workers and extending the protections to more workers. Oat futures also fell; corn and soybean futures rose.

The Kansas wheat tour, an annual examination of the crop by agricultural agents and grain analysts, began Monday amid expectations of high yields due to the lack of winterkill and the generally good spring weather. The assessments of the crop could begin showing up in the markets as early as Tuesday, said Don Roose, grains analyst with U.S. Commodities Inc. in Des Moines, lowa. He said corn futures were lifted by hopes for progress on food aid to Russia.

A firmer tone in many commodity markets fed inflation fears, which helped support soybeans, he said. Wheat for May delivery ended unchanged at a bushel; July wheat deliveries fell cents to a bushel; May corn rose cents to a bushel: May oats fell cents to a bushel; May soybeans rose cents to $5.95 a bushel. FUTURES EGGS COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Trade sentiment cautiously steady. Demand for eggs in cartons and loose eggs generally fair. Retail feature in progress on Grade A large at 59 cents.

Packer supplies were in balance with current needs. Inquiries and offerings were very light but additional supplies were available if needed.
