Truck Crashes,Separates Train , (la.) Upp«r DM Motn*t Moy J7, A demolished truck, slightly damaged diesel railroad engine and debris, strewn along the railroad right-of-way, resulted when a soft drink truck driven by Doug Higgins, 22, Estherville, struck a Milwaukee Road engine a mile west of Whittemore on highway 44 Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately, Higgins and a passenger in the vehicle, Gary Schneider,, 27, also of Estherville, sustained only minor injuries when the vehicle struck the corner of the diesel engine at the right in the photo. Higgins was pinned under the truck until passersby freed him and, Schneider was thrown out, landing in the ditch. " Sheriff Ralph Lindhorst, who snapped this photo, and Deputy Sheriff Larry Hudson investigated the mishap. The injured were taken to the hospital at Emmetsburg for treatment. 2 Estherville Men Hurt, Whittemore intersection, landing on its side. The ditch was littered with debris thrown from the truck, which was totally demolished. Damage to the train, which remained at the scene for an hour and 10 minutes, was estimated at $1,000 and some fence owned by Arnie Kollasch was knocked down by the truck, resulting in another $25 damage. Engineer M. C. Balek, Mason City, whose 61st birthday was the day of the accident, told Sheriff Ralph Lindhorst and Deputy Sheriff Larry Hudson that he and one of the brakemen riding STARLITE ENDS TONIGHT in the cab of the engine had seen the truck approaching the crossing and the brakeman watched to see if the truck had gotten stopped or not. He told the engineer the truck had struck the train - and a check of the speed of the engine proved it, as the three engines were suddenly going 55 miles per hour. Impact of the truck striking the train uncoupled 33 loaded and 28 empty cars behind, allowing the engines to pick up speed in a hurry. The engines continued about three-fourths of a mile down the track before they could be stopped to back up to the crossing. The engineer said total weight of the long train was 3,640 tons. Other trainmen were C. M. Powers, conductor, and H. W. VerHoef, brakeman, both of Sanborn, and H. H. Block, brakeman, Canton, S. D. Gets Fellowship National Defense Graduate Fellowships supported by a $515,000 grant from the Department_of_Health, Education and Welfare have been awarded to 44 students for graduate study at Iowa State University. Carol Wisman, Algona, received one of the fellowships, which pay the students' fees, are awarded for three years and provide a $2,000 stipend the first year with the stipend increasing by $200 each year after that. A $500 dependency allowance also is provided. -101- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Reed celebrated her 101st birthday at the Walters Nursing Home in Panora on April 16th. Mrs. Reed came from Pennsylvania when a small child and has lived in Iowa ever since. Two young men from Estherville, employees of a soft drink firm, luckily escaped with only -minor injuries when the truck in which they were riding struck a long westbound Milwaukee Railroad freight train on highway 44, a mile west of Whittemore, at 3:20 p. m. Wednesday. The men, Doug Higgins, 22, driver of the truck, and Gary Schneider, 27, passenger in the vehicle and salesman for the Dix Bottling Co. of Estherville, were taken to the hospital at Emmetsburg by ambulance for treatment of their injuries. Higgins sustained injuries to his right arm and right chest and Schneider suffered lacerations to his head, right hand and left leg. Higgins was pinned under the right door of the truck following the collision and was freed by passersby, who dug a hole in the wet soil to release him. Schneider was thrown out, and landed Jn the ditch nearby. ALGOMA , TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY The truck was headed north at the time of the mishap. Higgins stated afterward that he did not see flashers at the crossing and said the vehicle was traveling at a speed of 50 miles per hour. The train was traveling, 48 miles per hour when the collision occ-> urred.
