ALL EDITIONS REPUbLIC The Arizona Republic DO April 29, 1970 Obituaries Mrs. Mamie Payton, widow of missionary LOS ANGELES Graveside services for Mrs. Mamie Payton, 81. a Phoenix resident for 46 years before moving here early this year, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Greenwood Memorial Park, 2300 W.

Van Buren. Phoenix. Mrs. Payton. who moved to Phoenix from her native Mississippi in 1923, died here Friday.

She was the widow of the late Rev. John Payton, a minister and missionary for 35 years in Phoenix and pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church when he retired. Other services will be at 11 a.m. today at Grace Memorial Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles. Universal Memorial Center is handling local arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Nolan and John; six daughters, Mrs. Flossie Taylor, Mrs. Essie Benson, Mrs. Ethel Bruce, Mrs. Verbest Palmer, Mrs.

Izora Smalley and Mrs. Hazel Brown, 12 grandchildren, all of Los Angeles, and two sisters out of state. Forrest Barka LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. Rosary for Forrest L. Barka, 64, who owned the Barka Refrigeration Co.

in Phoenix from the early 1930s until he moved here two years ago, will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today in the San Juan Capistrand Mission. Mr. Barka, a native of Lordsburg, N.M., who moved to Phoenix about 1928, died Monday at his home here. He worked for the Phoenix Elementary School District for five years after entering the refrigeration business.

Mr. Barka helped formulate the Arizona Refrigeration Code, did volunteer work for the Boy Scouts and was a member of the Elks Lodge and St. Agnes Catholic Church. His wife, Julia McCann Barka, was head of the Central High School art department until retiring two years ago. Surviving besides his wife are a brother, James E.

of Phoenix; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Sutton of Phoenix and. Mrs. Barbara Malone of Northridge, one sister, Mrs. Betty Cheek of Chandier, and 12 grandchildren.

Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the mission. Burial will be in El Toro, Calif. Shessers Mortuary of Laguna Beach made arrangements. Mamie Payton Jack Osborne SCOTTSDALE Jack Lee Osborne, 46, who had been an auto dealer in his native Mount Vernon, before moving to Phoenix in 1955, died Monday in St.

Luke's Hospital. Mr. Osborne, 8708 E. Terrace Drive, had lived in Scottsdale five years and was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of a Masonic lodge, the Shrine and the Commandry, all in Illinois.

Survivors include his wife, Elzona, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Woolard, all of Scottsdale. Services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Messinger Mortuary, 515 E.

Indian School. Burial will be in Green Acres Cemetery. Peter Greenberg Services for Peter Greenberg, 75, who died yesterday at Good Samaritan Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. today at Ginger Resnick of Phoenix; a with burial to follow in Beth El Cemetery. Mr.

Greenberg, a native of Romania, was a retired harness maker. A resident of 1838 W. Mission Lane, he came here in 1962 from Winnipeg, Canada. He was a member of Beth El congregation. Survivors include his wife, Ann; a son, Hank of North Hollywood; a daughter, Mrs.

Cremation will follow. Mrs. Miyauchi, 6333 N. 59th moved here 18 years ago from Oakland, and was a member of the Arizona Buddhist Church. She was born in Kago Shima, Japan.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Yukio Miyauchi, a Glendale physician; and Masaru of Toyko; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Margaret Helgeson Mrs. Margaret Ellen Helgeson, 60, who moved here six years ago from Detroit Lakes, where she was an owner of the K. M.

News store, died yesterday en route Good Samaritan Hospital. Mrs. Helgeson, 2022 E. McDowell, was a member of the First Lutheran Church and Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, Gordon and two sisters and a brother out of state.

Friends may call from 2 to 10 p.m. today in Mercer Mortuary, 1541 E. Thomas. Services and burial will be in her native Detroit Lakes. Ruth Bailey MESA Services for Mrs.

Ruth Perkins Bailey, 85, who died Sunday in Mesa General Hospital, will be at 9 a.m. today in the 11th Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 316 S. LeSueur. Graveside rites will be at 4 p.m. today in the Snowflake Cemetery, Gibbons Mortuary announced.

Mrs. Bailey, 121 S. LeSueur, was born in Cedar City, Utah, and moved to Arizona 14 years ago from Utah and lived in Mesa the past seven years. She was a former bank officer and clerk and treasurer of San Juan County, Utah. She had been a church choir director, soloist and quartet member.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jesse M. Smith of Mesa; two sons, Max E. of Monticello, Utah, and Loile J. of Salt Lake City; a brother and four sisters out of state; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jonathan Ayers Services for the Rev. Jonathan W. Ayers, 71, of 11735 N. 19th a resident here for five years, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Palmcroft Baptist Church, 1529 W.

McDowell. Burial will be in Deer Valley Memorial Garden Cemetery. Mr. Ayers, who was born in Bakersville, N.C., died yesterday at Maryvale Samaritan Hospital. He moved to Phoenix from Pasadena, and taught Sunday School at the Palmeroft church.

He was a retired Baptist minister. Survivors include his wife, Etta; two sons, James of Prescott and Glen of Richmond, three daughters, Mrs. Elaine Whitton of Phoenix, Mrs. Margie Watson of Pasadena and Mrs. Betty Worth of Lamirada, and seven grandchildren.

Jean Fowler Mrs. Jean A. Fowler, 66, who came here in 1962 from Detroit, died Monday in Phoenix Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Fowler, 8208 N.

Black Canyon, was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was born in Harford, Mich. Survivors include a brother, Nathan Moulds of Saint Joseph, and a niece, Mrs. Norma J. Sheppard of Phoenix.

Services will be at 10. a.m. tomorrow in A. L. Moore and Sons Mortuary, 333 W.

Adams. Burial will be in Glendale Resthaven Cemetery. Walter Eggers MESA Walter Eggers, 76, a tax collector who retired to Mesa 18 years ago from Huron, S.D., died Monday in Mesa Lutheran Hospital. Mr. Eggers, 2731 N.

82nd was a member of World War I Veterans, Barracks 1243. He was 'born in New Jersey. Survivors include his wife, Grace; a daughter, Mrs. Norma Nelson of Huron; and 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Friends may call from 2 to 9 pm today in Desert View 9-1 9702 apathe Trail Edward F.

Becker TEMPE Veteran writerdirector Joseph S. Parker, 57, who for nearly 40 years helped make Americans hear, see, feel and laugh at some of the best that radio, TV and motion pictures had to offer, died yesterday of a heart attack in his home. When Mr. Parker quit the Hollywood scene five years ago and retired to the Valley with "no regrets," he said, "I was directing in motion pictures when it was a happy business to be in. Not like now, when there's 'I Am Curious' and a bunch of punks making horrible pictures.

It saddens me." He joined NBC at Hollywood in 1936 and shaped such programs as "Fibber McGee and Molly," "Amos and Andy," "Bing Crosby Music Hall," Rudy Vallee; "The Great and "Lum and Abner." Later he produced the first live TV comedy show in Hollywood, "'The Buster Keaton Show." Not long after that he began writing, directing and pro ducing feature and TV films for Universal International: "Mardi Gras" with Pat Boone; "The Hot Angel," John Agar; "The Last Wagon," Richard Widmark; "'The King and Yul Brynner; "Affair to Remember," Cary Grant. He was a longtime member of the Screen Directors Guild and member of the directors' branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He director the Academy Awards show from 1957 to 1960. His documentary film, "House Without a Name," was nominated for an Academy Award in 1957. In 1930 he started on the stage with Edward Everett Horton and spent six years as stage manager and director Lawrence Gruenke Lawrence E.

Gruenke, 54, a member of the Phoenix Clowns Club who was also known as "Unicycle Mycle," died Monday route to Phoenix Baptist Hospital. Mr. Gruenke was stricken shortly after performing for a group of Boy Scouts Monday evening He moved to Phoenix 26 years ago from his native Michigan City, and lived at 3725 W. Elm. He owned and operated the Jug Laununtil two years ago at 4224 W.

Indian School. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Concordiia Lutheran Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the church, 4901 W. Indian School.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today in Mercer Mortuary, 1541 E. Thomas. Burial arrangements are incomplete. Survivors 'include his wife, Bessie; two sons, Leslie of Phoenix, and Larry of Los Angeles; his father, Otto of Michigan City; and three sisters out of state.

Steven Garcia Steven Charles Garcia, 21, who was brought here 20 years ago from his native Los Angeles and had been a student at the Perry Institute, died Monday in his home, 5314 N. 33rd St. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benito Garcia; a brother, Jack; and a sister, Mrs.

Jo Ann' Thiry, all of Phoenix. Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden, Scottsdale. Burial will be in Green Acres Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Perry Rehabilitation Center, 3146 E. Windsor, Albert Anderson Albert E. Anderson, 89, who moved here in 1958 from Minneapolis and was a charter member of the Sun Valley Baptist Church of Scottsdale, died Monday in the Phoenix Nursing and Convalescent Center. Mr. Anderson, 7007 S.

Montezuma, was born in Grandy, and had worked 30 years in a creamery in Minnesota. He was a deacon emeritus of the church here. Survivors include two sons, Raynold of Minneapolis and Albert of Clearwater Beach, four daughters, Mrs. Russell Jones, Mrs. 'Walter Johnson, Mrs.

Orville Thompson and Mrs. Henry Listiak, all of Phoenix; and 13 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. Services will be at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden, be SUN CITY Edward F.

Becker, 69, a musician and composer 30 years for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios at Culver City, died yesterday in Maryvale Hospital, Phoenix. Mr. Becker, 10628 El Rancho Drive, was a native of New York City and retired here in 1961. Survivors include his wife, Marle. Mr.

Becker led a band at Riverside Ballroom in Phoenix until 1925, when he left to play piano in a Long Beach, theater. From there he moved to Grauman's Metropolitan Theater, where he played for Bing Crosby, then a young singer. A tour with Henry Halstead's dance band was followed by his introduction at MGM, he worked with many famous people for the next 30 years. Among his close friends Mr. Becker included Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Robert Taylor and Fred Astair.

He had vivid memories of such co-workers as Jean Harlow, Shirley Temple, Marion Davies and Grace Kelly, according to his family. He was a member of the Musicians Union. Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. today in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 8614 W.

Peoria Ave. Mass will be said at 10 a.m, tomorrow in the church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today in A.

L. Moore and Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams, Phoenix. Preston Pugh SCOTTSDALE 'Preston Amos Pugh, 76, who had been a machine die setter 30 years for the Electric Auto Lite Co. in Toledo, Ohio, died Monday in Georgian Court Nursing Home, Phoenix.

Mr. Pugh, 8420 E. Keim Drive, moved here 30 months ago from Toledo and was a member of Scottsdale United Methodist Church. He was born in Weston, Ohio. Survivors include his wife, May; a son, Preston of Mount Prospect, a daughter, Mrs.

Richard H. Dennis of Scottsdale; two brothers a sister out of state; and eight grandchildren. tomorrows will be at 3 p.m. in Messinger Mortuary, 515 E. Indian School.

Cremation will follow. Henry Richardson MESA Henry E. Richardson, 55, a salesman for a coffee company who moved to Prescott 43 years ago from his native Caldwell, died Monday en route to Mesa General Hospital. Mr. Richardson, 811 S.

Dobson, had lived in Mesa 40 years. He was graduated from Mesa High School in 1929. Services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Gibbons Mortuary, 33 N. Sirrine.

Burial will be in Mesa Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Thelma; his mother, Mrs. Elvira P. Richardson of Mesa; and a sister, Marylou Sos of Ontario, Calif. Papers target of antitrust suit A former auto carrier for The Arizona Republic yesterday filed an antitrust suit seeking $450,000 damages from Phoenix Newspapers, Inc.

Willian Schmuhl 30, of 3101 N. 53rd charged in his suit that the defendant company reduced the size of his route, damaged his relations with customers and destroyed his business, built up over a period of 10 years. The suit was assigned to U.S. District Court Judge Walter E. Craig, but no hearing date has been set.

His parents and grandparents were born in Arizona, but he was born in Santa Monica, Calif. His first job in radio was given to him in 1935 by Jack Williams, station manager of KOY then, and now Arizona's governor. During World War 11, he was radio director of the office of the coordinator of InterAmerican Affairs, headed by Nelson Rockefeller. Then he became program director for 12 armed forces radio stations in Africa and Italy. Near the end of the war, he replaced Winston Burdette as the voice of Rome for CBS and served as foreign correspondent for the Edward R.

Murrow morning news in 1946. Before joining 20th Century Fox after the war, Mr. Parker directed Army films in Europe, where he traced the combat trail of Medal of Honor winner Audry Murphy. Mr. Parker, of 229 E.

Garfield, had organized the Scottsdale Academy of Performing Arts, had ghost-written books for prominent persons in the Valley and directed two gridiron shows for the Arizona Press Club, the last one this March marking the end of his professional career. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Erie L. Parker of Tempe; three sons, Ronald H.

of Shreveport, and Stephen E. and Christopher, and a daughter, Germine Parker, all of Woodland Hills, a brother, Robert L. Parker of Phoenix, and one grandchild. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by an Elks Lodge 335 funeral committee in Paradise Chapel, 3934 E.
