Westphal and Ricky Sobers led the Suns with 25 points each. "I knew it was a great game to have played in right away," Westphal said. "But the idea as a player or as a coach is not to put together a great game.

It's to win the game and to try to win the series." At the start of the second overtime Sunday night, Westphal put a rested Richard Dumas into the game. He hadn't played since 6:03 remained in the third quarter. "I was trying to pull a Glenn McDonald," he said, referring to a Celtics substitute in 1976. "Glenn McDonald hadn't played the whole game in Boston and comes in at the start of the third overtime and gets three quick baskets. "I made that move (with Dumas) too early.

Everybody wasn't quite tired enough yet." The 1976 game had a more exciting finish, although play during the first three quarters was "ragged," Westphal said. Boston built a 22-point lead then squandered it. While the three overtimes Sunday were marked by fatigue and missed opportunities, Westphal considers that game a better one from start to finish. "The first three quarters (in 1976) was not a very good game and then the fourth quarter and the overtimes made it a classic," he said. "But this one, I thought, was a struggle the whole way, and I don't think anybody can say it wasn't a great game.

"I would assume that the people who watched this game enjoyed it as much as the people that watched that game 17 years ago," he added. "I would think that people would be talking about this game for a long time." It certainly left players and coaches drained, physically and emotionally. "He shouldn't be concerned," Phoenix's Charles Barkley said of his coach. "He has 17 years to recuperate." CHICAGO (AP) As the overtimes kept passing, Paul Westphal kept going back in time. Seventeen years ago he played for Phoenix in the first triple overtime game in the NBA Finals.

On Sunday night, he coached the Suns in the second triple overtime game in the finals. Palms get sweaty. Hearts start pounding. Hopes rise and fall with each possession. Were all the emotions of a triple-overtime thriller easier to handle as a player or coach? "Then it was easier to play," Westphal said, "Now it's easier to coach.

It's all the same pressure-wise. It's as intense as it gets." He wasn't concerned with reliving history Phoenix lost that 1976 marathon 128-126. He wants to make it by winning this year's title. The Suns beat the Chicago Bulls, 129-121 Sunday night. "I wasn't really thinking about 1976.

1 was just trying to win the game," Westphal said. "I'm proud to be a part of those things, but that's not the important thing. The important thing is to get back in this series and try to win it." The Suns improved their slim chances by cutting Chicago's lead in the best of-7 series to 2-1. They still must win Wednesday or Friday night in Chicago to stay alive. Westphal considers the 1976 game a fifth-game loss in a six-game series won by Boston irrelevant to his team's current struggle.

But he understands why comparisons are a hot topic. "I'm glad people remember that game," he said. "I think it was one of the most emotional, important games of all time, and it's one of the things that helped put the NBA on the map. It's games like that that make this game special." It was June 4, 1 976 in Boston. John Havlicek scored in the final seconds of the second overtime, giving the Celtics a 111-110 lead.

Fans poured onto the floor. Fights broke out. Referee Richie Powers was attacked by a fan. But the game wasn't over. Powers held up two fingers.

Two seconds were left. But Phoenix had to take the ball out under the Boston basket, a long way to go in two seconds. Then Westphal called a timeout he knew the Suns didn't have.

"We knew that we could advance the ball to halfcourt if we took a timeout, and we paid the penalty, which is one free throw," he said Monday. Jo Jo White made it, but Phoenix got the ball at midcourt. The tactic worked. Garfield Heard hit a jumper at the buzzer that sent the game into the third overtime. rif wDth looaum si 00 AP photo Secure seats: Helen Sukova looks away from the referee's standing during a break at the Eastbourne women's tennis tournament.

Players traditionally faced the court during breaks, but in the wake of Monica Seles being attacked on the court in Germany, Eastbourne officials decided to give the players a view of the stands. TENNIS: Michael Chang's final tuneup for Wimbledon ended abruptly Monday when the third seed was beaten 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 by Bernd Karbacher in the first round of the Halle grass court tennis tournament. The event also marks Andre Agassi's return from a two-month layoff forced by tendinitis in his wrist. Agassi practiced in private for 25 minutes before rain halted his workout. He plays German Carl-Uwe Steeb today.

Karbacher's victory was his third in as many meetings and second in three weeks against the American. The German also ousted Chang from the second round of the French Open. In other first-round matches involving seeded players, No. 6 Brad Gilbert of San Rafael, beat Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark 7-6, 6-4; No. 7 Marcos Ondruska of South Africa ousted Rene Nicklisch of Germany 6-0, 6-2; and No.

8 Marc Goellner of Germany beat Richard Matuszewski of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., 6-3, 6-4. More than 30 matches, including top-seeded Martina Navra-tilova's opener, were rained out Monday at the Eastbourne women's grass-court tennis tournament. Navratilova, preparing to try for her record 10th Wimbledon singles crown beginning next week, was to play Romanian qualifier Ruxander Dragomir. Two matches were completed before the rain came. Second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini beat Pascal Paradis-Mangon 6-3, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Helena Sukova overpowered Linda Harvey-Wild 6-1, 6-2.

BASEBALL: Nolan Ryan's days waiting to pitch again are growing longer as the season gets shorter. "I'd hate to know that I've pitched my last ballgame," he said Monday. "I continue to work and try to get ready, even it if I get one start the rest of the year and it's the last day of the season. If that's what it comes down to, then that's what I'm going to do." Ryan, 46, has been on the disabled list since May 8 with a strained and torn cartilege in his right knee that required surgery in April. Baseball's all-time strikeout leader has announced his retirement at the end of the season.

Although he feels capable of giving the Texas Rangers anywhere from 15 to 18 more starts, there is no telling when he will be able to pitch again.
