The Southern Illinoisan Sunday, November 8, 1992 Section Morning Line own Offense sputters, defense shudders as Bears extend Saluki losing streak Swain sets new record SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Junior Billy Swain now owns the record for career touchdown passes with 12 after he caught a one-yard pass from Scott Gabbert midway through the third quarter Saturday. The points were SIU's first of the game and cut Southwest Missouri State's deficit to 38-6. "It's a shame we haven't had a chance to red-shirt him," said SIU coach Bob Smith. "He'll probably break a lot of records before his career is over." Swain, from St.

Petersburg, now has 7 1 career catches for 903 yards. Senior Justin Roebuck is SIU's career leader in receptions (119) and yards (1,798) with one game left to improve those standards. Phil Wearier By Phil Weaner Of The Southern Illinoisan SPRINGFIELD, Mo. On an afternoon when the defensive team's bus had trouble getting to Plaster Field, it was Southern Illinois University's offense that ironically didn't show up Saturday. The Saluki offense, fifth nationally in total offense and No.

1 in the Gateway Conference, suffered its longest scoreless streak of the season in a 51-12 thrashing by 12th-ranked Southwest Missouri State. "They changed some things, basically their entire defensive scheme, to slow down our option. We haven't scored like that in a long time and I don't think their offense had played like that in a long time, either." SIU, shut out in the first half for the first time this season, didn't score until Scott Gabbert's one-yard pass to Billy Swain with 7:06 left in the third quarter.

By then, Smith's injury status uncertain CD This was nearly the same scenario, with Carbondale having another second-round home game. Worse yet, the Terriers were coming off an admittedly sluggish performance against Salem in the first round Wednesday night. "It was kind of like killing some said Carbondale all-state candidate Seth Smith, who left the game with a sprained knee early in the fourth quarter. "It was almost like playing Harrisburg, because Effingham runs about the same offense with a few more wrinkles." But Carbondale took control from the outset. "We really did," Carbondale coach John Helmick said.

Former Cincinnati Reds manager Lou Piniella has accepted a three-year contract as manager of the Seattle Mariners, a newspaper reported Saturday. A team official, however, would not confirm or deny the report.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer said an unidentified source close to Piniella told the newspaper he would be introduced as the Mariners' 10th manager at a Monday news conference. Mariners spokesman Dave Aust, speaking from Arizona on Saturday, would not comment on the report. He said there were no plans for a Piniella to be hired news conference. Aust said Woody Woodward, Mariners vice president for baseball operations, finished interviews for the manager's position on the East Coast on Saturday. Piniella could not be reached for comment at his Allendale, N.J., home Saturday.

Piniella left the Reds last month after failing to reach agreement with owner Marge Schott on a new contract. Piniella and Woodward had worked together in the 1980s with the New York Yankees. The Mariners are believed to have offered Piniella about $2.5 million over three years with a fourth-year option, the Post-Intelligencer said. Piniella would replace former manager Bill Plummer, who was fired on Oct. 13 along with the entire coaching staff after the team went 64-98 last season.

i By Greg Hardwig Of The Southern Illinoisan The Carbondale Community High School football team played ghost-busters Saturday. And it was Effingham which ended up getting slimed. The Terriers scored on their first five possessions and rolled to a 47-14 win over the Flaming Hearts in the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs at Bleyer Field. Carbondale (10-0), top-ranked in the state in its class, advances to the quarterfinals and will meet Decatur Eisenhower, a 35-12 winner over Stephen Decatur, at Bleyer Field next Saturday. Effingham finished 9-2.

A definite game time and ticket information will be announced early this week. The Terriers were facing the ghost of playoffs past after being upset in the second round by Harrisburg last year. Carbondale had advanced to the semifinals the year before and was thought to have a good shot to get that far again.
