THE BAYTOWN SUN Sunday, May 11, 19 beat Man charged with robbery of station A Baytown man is in police custody charged with the aggravated robbery early Friday morning of the Diamond Shamrock gas station, 810 Texas Ave. The man was arrested at his residence approximately 30 minutes after the incident. Police reported that at approximately 7:10 a.m. a black male entered the Diamond Shamrock station and asked an employee for change. When the cashier opened the register the suspect pulled a broken bottle from his waistband and threatened him.

The suspect then took approximately $200 from the cash register. drawer and fled. He was pursued by the Diamond Shamrock employee, a cab driver who had been in the store and a passing motorist, but the three men were unable to apprehend the suspect. Police reported that a few later, while checking the area of the robbery, Officer D. Hughes saw a man matching the description of the suspect and known to him as James Edward Lewis, 21, of 1108 Bookertee.

Hughes confronted Lewis, who fled into a house in the 800 block of Willow and then ran out back door towards Bookertee Street. Hughes then pursued the suspect to his residence. where he was taken into custody. Police said they later recovered $181 from under the house on Willow through which the suspect fled. Lewis was charged with aggravaled robbery in 263rd District Court.

Bond was not set. Accidents Two Baylown residents were injured in a three-vehicle accident at 11 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Park and North Jones. Police said a car driven by Buna Fae Cates Robinson. 76, of 301 E.

Fayle was northbound on Jones, left the stop sign and failed to yield the right of way to traffic headed west on Park. Police said Ms. Robinson's car was struck by a vehicle driven by Jose Martin Resendez. 17. of 427-TIPS CRIME STOPPERS 1613 Hawthorne.

The Robinson vehicle then also collided with a vehicle driven by James Ray Anthony, 39, of 5212 Willowview, which was also headed west on Park. Robinson was taken by ambulance to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, where she was reported in satisfactory condition Saturday morning. Resendez was taken by ambulance to Gulf Coast Hospital, where he was treated and released. Police ticketed Ms. Robinson for failure to yield the right of way.

Resendez and Anthony were ticketed for failure to maintain financial responsibiity insurance. In a separate accident, at approximately 6:15 p.m. Friday, a three-wheeled vehicle, driven by Judy M. Wilson. 18.

of Houston failed to negotiate a curb on John Avenue and struck a parked trailer. Ms. Wilson was taken by ambulance to San. Jacinto Methodist Hospital. where she was treated and released.

Liberty County LA PORTE No one was injured when two train engines and four empty boxcars derailed Friday morning south of Highway 225 near the Du Pont chemical plant, according to a spokesperson for the La Porte Police Department. Eastbound traffic was detoured for 21g hours following the 9:55 a.m. accident. The derailment was apparently caused by worn-out track. There was only slight damage to the train and track.

Both were repaired and back in operation later in the day. La Porte police said eastbound traffic was rerouted to Fairmont Parkway until 12:30 p.m. Police to host program MONT BELVIEU As one of its activities during National Law Enforcement Week. 424-3869 or 420-3950. history book available to public "The History of Baytown." a 160-page book by Margaret Swett Henson, will be printed in limited editions, it was announced Friday al the Baytown Chamber of Commerce luncheon. The book should be available by July 4. but copies must be reserved, said W.C. Smith of the Bay Area Heritage Society.

Its publication is being arranged by the Heritage Society, which also sponsors the Baytown Historical Museum. The book and the preservation of the Wooster schoolhouse are two of the Heritage Society's Sesquicentennial projects. The author is a retired University of Houston history professor who has written a number of books, including the biography of Samuel May Williams of Galveston. The Baytown history will include photographs of people. buildings, maps and waterways of early years, Smith said.

An extensive bibliography, footnotes and index have also been included in the book. "It is a sound bit of research." Smith told the chamber. He said that is shows how Baytown's history is related to Texas history as well as United States history. Smith said that the book begins with the first people in Baytown two Indian tribes and ends with the consolidation of Goose Creek, Pelly and Baytown into the one city of Baytown. Two chapters are devoted to the beginning of the petroleum industry in Baytown, Smith said.

City administrator Ruthie Sager said the committee met Thursday to discuss plans for a court. Local justices of the peace have handled violations of city ordinances and have collected fines for Mont Belvieu and most Texas towns that have no municipal court. However, Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox ruled in January justices of the peace cannot also serve as part-time magistrates for cities.

By law, the mayor of a city is responsible for municipal judge duties when that position is un- filled. Miller has told council he cannot assume the duties of city judge on a full-time basis. Municipal courts only have authority in violations of city or-. dinances, which can be no more than Class misdemeanors, punishable by a fine of up to $200. Council.
