Guess again Before channels 13 41 and 24 ever hit the airwaves a Macon television station was transmitting network and local programs to Middle Georgia It had Its beginning more than 30 yean ago when television was in its infancy The Federal Communications Commission allocated three television stations for Macon in 1452: channels 13 and 47 for commercial use channel 44 for educational use Two Macon radio stations had applied for channel 13 as their television outlet (WMAZ in 1948 WKEX In 1951) But both applications had been put pn hold during an FCC on construction of new television stations Channel 13 was more highly sought than 47 because most television sets were built to receive only channels 2 through 13 in the very high frequency (VHF) range The FCC had just opened up the ultrahign frequency (UHF) range with channels' 14 through 83 but most television sets required a special adapter to pick up UHF broadcasts WHEN IT BECAME likely the FCC would assign channel 13 to WMAZ WNEX Joined with radio station WBML to form Macon Television Co and applied for channel 47 in August 1952 Initially the FCC was concerned over two competing radio stations making a joint application for a television outlet But In February 1953 the application was granted and the state's first television station outside of Atlanta was on its way Construction began almost immediately and the studio and transmitter were completed by the end of April Each radio station owned 45 percent with Macon businessman William Fielding controlling the remaining 10 percent The station at 2411 Pro Nano Ave just north of where mart is now was described as a "modem flat-roofed brick building comprising a studio a large control room a reception room and five offices" with a stainless steel transmitting tower rising 437 feet above the building For several months before it went on the air the station transmitted test patterns and reported "perfect UNLIKE current programming which may run 24 hours a day the broadcast day for WETV ran from 3:30 pm to 11 :30 pjn The station was affiliated with NBC and ABC but used only NBC shows its first day of operations The first local program came on at 5:30 and featured Dee Lee and his Georgia Ramblers a "popular group of hillbilly They were followed by Ray Melton and his orchestra NBC provided that first night's foie with "News "The "First and "Sprats Reel" Following a local news weather and sports roundup at 10 pm WETV concluded the opening day's broadcast with a feature movie Other weekly programs scheduled Included "The Groucho Marx "Cavalcade of "Private "Judge for "Eddy "My Little Margie" "Danny and "Bob Sports fans were promised college and professional football games And Hicks said the station planned to make extensive use of filmed shows including a feature film each night About 20 local programs were planned each week including musical groups discussion panels and newscasts TOMMIE MELTON wife of former Mayor Buckner Melton worked for Channel 47 on one local program "I got the Job by she said "A friend asked me to go with her to the station to put in her job application And while she filled out the application someone Interviewed me and 1 got the job "Dave Reeves and 1 co-hosted a 'Name That Tune'-type program five nights a week Of course everything was done live and we had only one camera On the show the band played a song and the first viewer to call In with the correct title would win a Some of the prizes were very nice Mel- ft "We had a pretty good viewing audience but I was doing the show in addition to my daytime at a local bank she said "The show was a lot of fon but I felt I hod to give ft Competition in Macon increased when Channel 13 signed on as WMAZ-TV a month after WETVs arrival BOB SAGGESE worked as announcer and later as production manager for WETV "1 went to work for them after 1 got Please see WETV 3A ton said but others were a little more offbeat "My husband likes to tell the stray of how I gave away an ax she said "A local merchant had donated the handle as a consolation prize but we hadn't given it away It stayed at the station for weeks before I decided we had to be fair to the merchant and give away the prize So I did That was before Buck and I were married but he happened to watch the show that night 1 haven't been able to live down the ax handle stray She stayed at the station about a year Today Litterers beware!
