4 -(P) -Five years ago the Chinese Reds were completing their conquest of the mainland. Chiang Kai-Shek's government prepared to flee from distant Chengtu to Taipeh. The Nationalists felt friendless and abandoned. The situation appeared hopeless and you could almost smell doom in the air. Few dared hope Formosa would be under Nationalist control after the summer of 1950.

Lewer still thought it possible there would be any Nationalist China in 1954. But what seemed an impossibility then is reality today. The signing of a mutual defense pact with the United States has given Nationalist China: a greater sense of security than at any time since the Reds conquered the mainland in 1949. From Chiang down, Chinese here believe the prospects of returning to the mainland are brighter than ever. The American commitment to safeguard Formosa from Communist invasion, made June 27, 1950, two days after the outbreak of the Korean war, has been formalized in a treaty which remains in DECEMBER Dollar Day VALUES Women's Leather Softee Moccasins Beaded, All-Leather Moccasins Foam Cushion Insoles, Golden-Tan, Grey-Natural, Purple $2 Reg.

The Business and Defense Services administration said this week that 33,194 tons of government copper have been alloted so far to consuming industries and that only 7,603 tons remain available for hardship cases through the end of the year, when the program will end.

The government came to the aid of hard-pressed fabricators early in October when some of them faced shutdowns for lack of metal. Producers still are unable to meet all demands for copper, but the general belief is that there will be an improvement in supplies early in the force indefinitely. It can be terminated only on a year's notice. The big question in Formosa today is: What will the Reds do? The consensus here is they won't try an invasion so long as Formosa is under U. S.
