Section fHaroit Srlrgrapli ia Nrloa E4 OrlMmort SssrttEOitsr 744 4)3) FrtMy Jsnsi Assistant Sssftl Eillsr 744 4441 SUNDAY MORNING OCTOBE IS IMI Georgia Steamrolls Past Vandy 53-21 Coach Vince Dooley said was no doubt that Vandy was determined to stop the Herschel Walker attack early and they did a good job But when you over-concentrate on an area other things open up" Everything opened up for Dooley's offense Fullback Ronnie Stewart broke quick openers early in the game and then Scott came on the scene knew by watching their films that they would give up the short Scott said out pattern was there all day" Belue agreed came in here with an open mind as to running or throwing the hall We thought the short patterns would be there They were and we took advantage of them" (See GEORGIA PageRB) The only surprise in the game was the way Georgia won Quarterbacks Buck Belue and John Lastinger unleashed a surprisingly awesome air show and flanker Lindsay Scott had the best game of his collegiate career Scott caught seven passes for 122 yards and a pair of touchdowns on his way to being named ABC-TV's Player of the Game As a teum Georgia passed for 237 yards and added 4(13 on the ground for a whopping 64(Vyard total AND THIS WAS a game that was not as close as the scoreboard indicated Georgia gave the Commodores one touchdown on a fumbled punt and a blown assignment in the Bulldog secondary left the door open for a 61 -yard Vanderbilt touchdown pass think we played a total game today" Georgia By Freddy Jones Assistant SNrtl ERItsr NASHVILLE Tenn Only one question remained when the University of Georgia rolled into Music City USA Friday afternoon Would Roy Acuff sing the that night at the Grand Ole Opry? Well OT Roy got the cannonhall rolling about 9 and the rest was history By the tune Georgia left Vanderbilt Stadium Saturday night the Commodores had the feeling the Wabash Cannohull had been sidetracked and hit them head on Georgia left with a S3 21 Southeastern Conference victory and was assured a higher ranking in the wire services' polls with the defeat of Texas Missouri and Michigan For Vanderbilt well the Commodores left knowing they had been on television for the first time in seven years Limloay Scull Auburn Rips Jackets 31-7 time we get in a situation to turn it around we come just that much short It's the same way every we'd love to have those opportunities back and have the chance to take it in and get back in the football said Georgia Tech Coach Bill Curry you don't have second chances in this business And that's where the game turned" Auburn tacked on an additional touchdown late in the game but it was the big play which dropped the Jackets to 1-5 on the season was the play that sealed it for said first-year Auburn Coach Pat Dye whose team is now 3-3 in a rebuilding situation thought the block and Joe Sullivan's run made the difference in the game" Sullivan's second -quarter run for all practical purposes was the game-winner It came after the Jackets had moved to a 7-3 lead early in the period AUBURN'S AL Del Greco moved the Tigers into a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter with a 31-yard field goal The Tigers had driven from their own 20 to the Jackets' 14 on their second possession of the game Auburn's Lionel James who led all rushers with 94 yards on 13 carries ran for 18 yards to start the drive A late-hit penalty against Tech's Paul Menegazzi tacked 15 yards onto the effort Sullivan passed to Tommy Carroll for 19 yards to Tech 24 Three plays later Mike Edwards ran for 13 yards to the 11 Two illegal procedure penalties stalled the drive and set up Del Greco's kick (See TECH Page 8B) By Tim Ellerbee Staff Writer ATLANTA This time it was Ron Rice standing in the Grant Field dressing quarters looking like a big kid ready to cry He wore the dejected look that has become common to the Georgia Tech football tram during the past two seasons Only this time Rice felt like he should shoulder much of the blame For a placekicker it was an unusual situation During the next few nights Rice be seeing his chip shot float wide of the goal post What Rice will be seeing is a No 43 in a blue uniform streaking 77 yards with a football under his arm Auburn and Georgia Tech played 60 minutes of football Saturday but it only took the Tigers nine seconds to turn what appeared to be a close game into a 31-7 victory over the Jackets The game was played in front of 50326 fans With 11 :05 remaining and Tech trailing Auburn 17-7 the Tigers' David King blocked 27-yard field goal attempt into the hands of teammate Christopher Martin who ran 77 yards for the score It was the third time this season Rice has had kicks blocked Memphis State blocked an extra point attempt and North Carolina blocked a field goal "All I saw was the said Rice heard it come off the man and I saw him going the other way COULD BE me I could have taken too long to get the kick off I don't know But it's frustrating We've come that close every game Every PtIOta by DANNY CILLELANO Auburn Defenirivc End Scott Riley (92) Smothere Robert lavette Harley Bowers Tech Demoralised ATLANTA keep reaching the point" Bill Curry said sadly in a quiet Georgia Tech dressing room we have a chance to get back into the game and then we fail is so demoralizing to both the coaches and the Looking only at the final score (31-7) one would hardly think that the Yellow Jackets ever had a chance to get back into the game against Auburn here Saturday But they did Auburn led by just 17-7 with about 11 minutes to play in the game And Tech was driving at the Tigers' five fourth down and 1 Curry made the decision to go for a first down instead of trying a short field goal This set in motion a series of events that turned what had been a close encounter into a rout The fourth-down pass from Jim Bob Taylor to Robert Lavette was completed to the 1 where it would have been first and goal A touchdown would cut the Tigers' lead to 17-14 BUT AS ANNOUNCERS like to say the phone" Tech was penalized five yards for illegal procedure of our young receivers lined up in the wrong spot" Curry was to explain later This changed things to the point that the coach now decided to go for the field goal on fourth and 8 But David King came roaring in from the outside to block Ron Rice's 27-yard attempt Mike Martin grabbed the ball and sprinted 77 yards for six points which spelled curtains for the stunned Jackets Instead of the score being 17-14 it was 24-7 When Auburn got the ball with seven minutes left in the game the Tigers hadn't run a single play from scrimmage in the fourth period But they had scored seven points Tech had run 19 and had gained 108 yards but had nothing to show for it Two big mistakes had more than nullified the good things that had been done CURRY WAS understandably upset over both the penalty that nullified the first-down pass and the blocked kick have never been associated with a he said worked so hard on field goal protection And then to have this happen It changed the game The reason the Jackets had been working so hard on field goal protection is that kicks had been blocked twice this season and on each occasion the man who made the block came from the outside "We practiced against this very thing all last Curry pointed out had guys coming hard from the outside" Auburn had figured though that they could block a Tech kick after seeing it done previously by other Jacket foes snapper get the ball back to the holder fast and their holder is slow putting it down" Frank Orgel the defensive coordinator explained let us get to their kicker from the AUBURN HEAD COACH Pat Dye agreed with Curry that the return of the blocked kick it but he pointed to another play that he rated as just as important 24-yard run by Joe Sullivan midway of the second quarter (7:27 left) was also he reasoned were behind 7-3 at that time and facing a fourth and four situation They seemed to overrun the play and he just cut back and went all the way" Curry noted this as another example of the type of mistake his team keeps making had that play defensed perfectly" he recalled we just ran right by While the day as a whole was a dismal one for the Atlantans there were a few things that encouraged Curry thought that Taylor did some good the coach said of his reserve quarterback filling in for the injured Mike Kelley he was also rusty in some areas Overall I think he deserved a better fate" AUBURN CORRECTLY figured that Tech would do more running than usual trying to keep the pressure off Taylor and this helped the Tigers contain a Tech offense that moved the ball well on occasion but which lacked consistency didn't run as well outside as I thought we could" Curry groaned Lavette went inside a few times when he had good yardage outside We controlled the ball on them as well as anybody but we needed to throw earlier now on we'll be more open with Taylor now that he has a game under his It won't matter though if the Jackets keep making the killing mistakes that take them out of contention every week When such errors will end is anybody's guess biggest job Curry noted to keep the team from getting so down it That may be the toughest assignment anybody has been handed this entire season Deciding Game Today Los Angeles Valley State College Wildcats rebounded from a 94-yard touchdown by Miles College running back Robert Nelson to come back and claim a 37-6 victory over the Bears from Birmingham Ala Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium Wildcat running back Michael Wool-folk had his biggest day rushing this year with 216 yards on 38 carries Woolfolk scored two touchdowns rushing on the day and had a third touchdown run of 77 yards called back because of a penalty With the exception of the long run by Nelson the Wildcat defense almost totally shut down the Miles offense giving up just three first downs The Bears
