6 Santa Cruz Sentinel Wednesday, April 30, 1980 Eight Die In Kern County Plane Crash i ii ii niii iiiii hi ipMU'i'f ijuiui'M Mi" ii in i i ii. i TjfFW BAKERSFIELD (AP) A Bak-ersfield businessman, his son and his grandson were among the eight people found dead in the wreckage of a twin-engine plane near here, authorities reported. It was the sixth crash of a private plane in Central California storms in just over a week. Wreckage of the Piper Aztec aircraft was found Tuesday about three miles north of Meadows Field, from where the plane took off en route to Visalia, said Ed Jones of the Federal Aviation Administration. Pilot Leon Pitts, 49, filed no flight plan before taking off Monday, but he called the Bakersfield tower for weather information about 8:15 p.m: and apparently took off a short while later, Jones said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Jones said the weather was "marginal" with overcast conditions at about 1,000 feet. He called that "just barely minimum visual conditions." There also were some showers at the time of the crash, the National Weather Service said. Pitts was not qualified for instrument flying, the Civil Air Patrol reported. Observers said it appeared the plane might have been trying to return to Bakersfield when it crashed, but this could not be confirmed immediately.

"The plane appeared to belly in at first and then break up," said sheriff 's Lt. Carl Sparks. Debris was scattered over a 200-yard area of rolling foothills. The passengers were identified by deputy coroner Ed Bolt as Delvin Pitts, 29, of Visalia; his son, Justin, Lewin-da Hyberger, 25, of Visalia; her daughter, Kelly Sue, Gerald Boles of Visalia; Daniel Amos, 29, of Bakersfield; and Carl Nickell, 21, of Bakersfield. Pitts owned the and Plumbing Supply Co.

Seventeen people died in four of the crashes, but four Japanese students were found alive in the southern Sierra Nevada Friday after being stranded at their downed plane for five days. a v.

Barger said "hypes," who inject substances into their bodies, are not accepted as members. Then, in response to question's from his attorney, Barger reeled off some of rules that could get a member kicked out of the club: -Stealing a motorcycle at a club function. Messing around with another member's wife or girl friend.

-Hitting another member with weapons. The prospect can attend meetings without any vote and is given "flunky" chores, he said. After six months in that status, a 100 percent vote is needed to become a full member. Asked what the various Hells Angels clubs had in common, he replied that the members "all liked motorcycles, partying, having good times and being with each other. Its a complete way of life rather than just on weekends." Except for one instance, he testified, he had no knowledge until he came to court about a number drug laboratories in California and elsewhere which the prosecution alleges were members of the Hells Angels.

Mangan is reported to have advised Barger not to testify. Barger and 17 Hells Angels and alleged associates are accused of various violations of drug, racketeering and conspiracy provisions of the controversial Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations law (RICO), designed to smashed organized crime. Barger testified that becoming a prospect in the Hells Angels is the same as being a fraternity pledge. Barger said prospects start out a year as "hang-arounds" who are interested in becoming members but don't know anyone well enough. damaging to the central case the government is trying to make that the Hells Angels is a drug-oriented enterprise and that dealing drugs and racketeering are necessary elements for membership.

Another possible plus for the defense in the seven-month trial is the fact that Barger and 12 other Angels defendants behind bars in the San Francisco County jail all declined an offer of freedom by the ringleaders of a mass break Sunday morning. Under questioning from his court-appointed lawyer, Frank Mangan, Barger, who founded the Oakland chapter of the Hells Angels, said his dope dealing never involved other SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Hells Angels leader Ralph "Sonny" Barger, testifying for himself in a trial that could send him to prison for 40 years, says dope dealings never were discussed at club meetings directly contradicting government claims. Barger, whom prosecutors call the "godfather" of the motorcycle club, admitted to the jury Tuesday that he was a heavy drug user and dealt drugs before he went to prison eight years ago. But that, he added, had nothing to do with the club. "They were my personal affairs," Barger said quietly from the witness stand.

is being held without bail after an innocent plea was entered for him at his arraignment in Citrus Municipal Court. Danny Jerome Young, 21, was ordered Tuesday to return to court May 13 for a preliminary hearing on one count of killing young Tolleson and three counts of kidnapping one involving the fourth grader V. 7c J5 and two from an earlier attempted kidnap-robbery of a mother and her baby. Young, his arms and legs shackled, hung his head and looked at the floor while the charges were read. When the judge asked him if he understood the charges, Young said "No." So the judge entered the automatic innocent plea and appointed an attorney to defend him.

In the audience were Ronald Tolleson the murdered boy's father, and Manford Tolleson, the boy's grandfather. "I still feel others were involved," the boy's father said later. innmm (AP Laserphoto) This was scene where twin engine Piper Aztec crashed near Bakersfield. The coalition is working for establishment of civilian review boards to handle complaints against police officers and sheriff's deputies, and also seeks a county Board of Supervisors' investigation of jail conditions. Zinzum said he was told about 50 prisoners were taking part in the hunger strike.

He said jail prisoners were being given only three to five minutes to eat, in violation of a federal court order setting a minimum of 15 minutes. Grimm said of that claim, "I have yet to see someone told to get up and move. The others taking part in the protest also were checked Moday, but no health problems were found, he added. Those refusing food at mealtime have been drinking liquids provided at the meals and in their cells.

Grimm indicated some complaints involve regulations that personal articles are provided free of charge only to indigent prisoners, but inmates who have money must pay for them. The jail captain said that inmates in the cellblock where the disturbance occurred have more free time than most of the 5,500 prisoners at the jail, because "that particular group of inmates is made up of those preparing their own defenses," LOS ANGELES (AP) A nine-day hunger in a Los Angeles County Jail cellblwk involves 15 inmates, officials at (lie central jail have confirmed. The number of prisoners taking part in the hunger strike has declined almost daily since it began April 21, the jail's chief operating officer, Capt. Bob Grimm, said Tuesday.

Charges are still pending in connection with the April 19th disturbance. Grimm said one officer was hospitalized eight days with a head injury and has not yet returned to duty.
