(AP) Jane Froman, a glamorous and popular wartime singer who battled shattering plane crash injuries to capture the nation's imagination, has died at the age of 72. The story of the big band singer's fight against the injuries that nearly cost her a leg was portrayed in the 1952 film, "With A Song In My Miss Froman had lived here since her retirement 18 years ago. Her husband, Rowland H.

Smith, said he had gone home for lunch Tuesday when he found his wife dead, apparently from natural causes. Miss Froman, who got her singing start in Cincinnati and went on to become a featured performer with the Paul Whiteman band, was injured in 1943 when an airliner carrying a group of USO performers crashed into a river near Lisbon, Portugal. Twenty-four of the 39 persons aboard were killed, but Miss Froman was rescued by a pilot who later became her second husband. The injuries forced her to undergo dozens of bone grafts and operations, and she fought doctors who insisted her right leg But be amputatedths later, unable to walk, she starred in the Broadway musical "Artists and and after World War II ended in Europe she entertained 300,000 servicemen, keeping the engagement interrupted by the crash. A succession of Broadway plays, the film "Stars Broadway" and numerous appearances helped her achieve financial al security, pay medical bills estimated by Smith at $500,000 and retire in 1962. She married Smith, a University of Missouri public information officer, that year.

Asked in 1968 why she stopped singing, she replied, "I was tired and I thought everybody was tired of me. Now I'd rather make spaghetti than sing. She got her singing start with a Cincinnati radio station after attending the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Funeral arrangements were not announced immediately.

SC Council Votes To Build Garfield Park Library Ramp The battle of the Garfield Park library ramp was fought anew at the Santa Cruz City Council level Tuesday, with the council finally voting 4 to 3 to build it at an estimated cost of $15,000. The ramp was first proposed a couple of years ago by Terry Brickley, founder of Adaptability Unlimited, and had its ups and downs ever since in the post-Proposition 13 era. Councilman Larry Edler contended Tuesday that with Proposition 9 going to the voters in June the City Council should delay making a decision on building the ramp until the outcome of the vote on this measure is known. He suggested that if the measure is passed there may very well be no library system to worry about. Councilman Michael Rotkin stated however: "We are required by law to construct this ramp for the handicapped and we should go ahead and do it." A motion to do so, by Rotkin, was seconded by Councilman John Mahaney and was supported by these two and Councilmen Bert Muhly and Bruce Van Allen.

Inclined with Edler to await the fate of Proposition 9 were Mayor Joseph Ghio and Vice Mayor Spiro Mellis. The hearings, conducted by the San Lorenzo Valley Water District, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Bear Creek Estates clubhouse. Both the facilities plan and the environmental impact report are available for public review at the water district office in Boulder Creek and at the Boulder Creek Library.

The proposed improvements in the facilities plan include using the existing sewage treatment facilities by improving them to comply with state waste discharge requirements. The state Regional Water Quality Control Board imposed a ban on all sewer connections in this subdivision of 43 existing homes and 17 vacant lots in 1975 after it was discovered that the wastewater being discharged from the treatment plant On Any Occasion Memorial Anniversary Birthday Holiday Give a living memorial the gift of health For rift envelopes, contact DOMINICAN HOSPITAL FOUNDATION 1555 Soquel Drive Santa Cruz, CA 95065 Call 476-0220 ext 1636 Statistics 7-pound, MARRIAGE opher Mark Filed 9:39 p.m. and Patrick and and Hector Cayuga, and Nancy Sean McCORKLE Sylvia and Clarence Goldie and DOWNING Nancy mund SORRELL Bruce and Susan GUERREIRO a Natalie and Robert STAHL Margaret and Dana STAKES John and Barbara DUFRESNE-SMITH Michael Dufresne and Suzanne Smith. Most water users will end up paying about $23 more a year, according to District Manager Bob Johnson. The district's bi-monthly service charge is proposed to go up' 20 percent, from $2.80 $3.36. The commodity charge will increase 11 cents per 100 cubic feet of water used, which is considerably less than the previously announced 40 to 50 percent increase. The increase was less than originally planned because of the district's recent successful procurement of its longawaited $2 million revenue bonds sale for capital improvements.

A Watsonville pilot is missing today along with three executives of the Bruce Church Co. lettuce growers of Salinas following what authorities believe to be the crash of a twinengine plane in the Gabilan Mountains. The pilot has been identified as Nick Kalich of Watsonille, according to the Associated Press. Heavy fog hampered the search for the missing men by Monterey County Sheriff's deputies on Fremont Peak, near San Juan Bautista.

After being halted during the night, the search resumed early today. The six-seater craft departed from the San Joaquin Valley and was due at Salinas Airport at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening, according Assistant Sheriff Charles Foster. In heavy rains, the jet apparently overshot the runway and was ordered to make another approach. But trackers lost radar signals about 7 p.m from the plane as it flew about 12 miles northeast of Salinas, Foster said.

The Church Co. of Salinas identified the men on the plane as Harry MacKenzie, Cecil Almanza and Steve Owen, all company executives from Salinas. BC Man Accused Of Assault A Boulder Creek man who deputies said attempted to ram a sheriff's car with his own and then held deputies at bay with a shotgun was arrested on an assualt charge Tuesday night. Deputies were summoned to a Vine Hill Road residence by a woman who said her estranged husband was standing the end of her driveway with a shotgun to his head, threatening suicide. En route to the scene, deputies were advised by radio that the man had fled the residence in his vehicle.

A responding unit spotted the in the area parked with the headlights out. The deputy spotted the suspect, who pointed a shotgun at the deputy. When the sheriff's unit pulled up, the suspect started up his auto and tried to ram the patrol car before fleeing at a high rate of sped. A chase took the deputy and suspect back to the house on Vine Hill Road, where the armed man took cover behind his auto. Deputies tried to shoot out the headlights on the suspect's car, but two shotgun blasts and a revolver shot failed to do the trick.

But, after the gunfire, deputies found, the suspect sitting behind car with his hands down at his side. They found the shotgun nearby. Michael Norleif Storheim, 28, was arrested and booked into County Jail on a charge of assault on a peace officer. Bail was set at $5,000. Cowgirl Robs SC Market Sheriff's deputies are looking for a cowgirl who robbed the 7- Eleven store on Graham Hill Road of some $200 cash early Tuesday evening.

The store clerk told deputies she was alone in the store shortly before 5:15 when a woman wearing a cowboy hat walked into the store. After standing by a potato chip rack for a moment, the suspect walked over to the counter, simulated a weapon and said, "Guess what?" The clerk told deputies she replied, "I should have guessed," and handed the robber a stack of $1 bills. Apparently not satisfied with 1 the small denomination bills, the robber dipped into the till and grabbed fives and tens before fleeing. She ordered the clerk to lie down on the floor and count to 100 as she made her getaway. HAARKLAN In Santa Cruz, California, April 20, 1980.
