When Channlng Pollock wrote "The Fool" he finished what he considered his chef d'ouvre, his masterpiece.

For ten years he had been nursing this brain child until he felt it was able to step out and take its place In the world. It was tried out on the'eoast, and while It was successful. It was considered no great shakes in the way of a play. Undaunted, however, "The Fool" was taken within a stone's throw of the Great White Way and put into rehearsal. TWENTY SEASONS AGO TODAY "Pickings From Puck" is the attraction at tho Macdonough Theater tonight.

1 Meanwhile the theatrical wiseacres were having their little laugh. A dozen Broadway managers had read the manuscript and given It thumbs down. They admitted that it was a splendid piece of writing, an excellent dramatio Idea, but The Selwyns, however, decided to tsko a chance. They'thought that the verbal flaying administered by Pollock In his capital and labor scenes would do the theater-goers good besidcahelplng them. Thev thought the picture of the child stopping the onrushlng mob would be firBt-class melodrama.

They disagreed with A. II. Woods, who had the play first, but he was so sure of himself that he bet $1000 to $100 that the play would be a "flop." Then came the opening. The first wek was big, but the wiseacres said that this was to be expected. "Wait until next week," they chorused.

But next week brought another advance, the following still another, and now "The Fool" la the reigning success on Broadway. Arch Selwyn has not only collected Al Woods thousand, but he is waxing fat and sassy on the returns from the box office. And the wiseacres are saying: "Well, anyway, you never can tell anything about show business." Morris Oest la getting quite excited over the prospect of presenting the Moscow Art theater plays In New York on January 8. Proof of his perturbation Is to be found in the list of rules and Few Rules for Moscow Art regulations he Is drawing up to govern the action of the patrons during the engagement. The admission will be $5.50 for the choice seats.

There must be no applause during the course of the entertainment. There will be no tickets eold at the box office for the night of a performance. All tickets must be purchased in advance. The curtain will rise at 8 o'clock sharp and those coming so much as a minute late must wait until the first intermission before entering the theater. And the singular feature of It all Is that Gest will probably have no trouble in carrying out his rules and regulations.

The players will pre sent eight shows a week, six night performances and two matinees. EXITS AND ENTRANCES The word comes from London that Ted, Rose and Kitty Doner are scoring a tremendous hit at the Victoria theater there. "Tnar Fyodor Ivanovltch," bv Count Tolstoy, will be the opening presentation of the Moscow Art theater under the Comstock-Gest banners. Announcement is made that the third rcgulnr bill of The Burnham Players will be given at the Twentieth Century club on Thursday and Friday. December 7 and 8.

The attraction will be A. E. Thomas' "Tho Rainbow." Kd Ballard, proprietor of the Sells Floto circus, gave Charles Dillingham and R. II. Burnslde a unique Thanksgivlngpresent when he sent them a baby elephant.

Judy Is a year old and weighs 378 pounds. She will be used In the Hippodromo shows and will hold special soirees for tho children at tho matinees Harold Lloyd was the forty-third motion picture star to be the guest of the management of "The Last Warning" in New York. Four sneaker were called upon to outline reasons for the citizens of Oakland at large to be thankful. They were In the order named: John Phillips, chairman of the new Industries committe of the Chamber of Commerce; Oorga Sheldon, Secretary of the Uptown Association: Fred E. Reed, real estate Operator, and Rev. John Snape, Clergyman. Phillips told of the growth of Industrial Oakland, tracing Its history briefly and describing, the phenomenal growth of the ommunity Within the past few years.

OAKLAKD FACTORIES. There are 800 manufacturing stablishments here now employing 4J.O00 people," said Phillips. "The capital Invested Is $180,000,000 and the payroll $60,000,000 annually, while the ralue of the output of these concerns aggregate eoo. "It Is to these manufacturing: Interests that Oakland owes the tripling of the bank clearings In the past seren years and the quadrupling of the building permits within the past five years. "During 1,922 alone there were 58 new Industries added to Oakland's lirt, and applications are constantly coming In from every part of the globe.

The new Industries alone represent an Investment of $6,000,000, employ 2500 people and give a yearly payroll of $5,000,000." NEW INDUSTRIES TOLD. Phillips then gave a partial list of-the new Industries and the capital Invested and urged the members of the Advertising Club In particular and the citizens of the ocmmunity In general to ac-cuaint themselves with the facts of the case so that they may know and thus discuss Intelligently the Industrial conditions of the city. I venture to say that not one man within sound of my voice could mention one-third, or even one-fourth of the industries In or name the products continued Phillips. tnat mercnamo -wares from eastern points, wares that are actually manufactured and produced right here. "We must have more patriotism and more loyalty and -we must be thankful for what has been done Sheldon devoted his attention to a survey of the buildings la the uptown district, taking as his ambject "Our Buildings." BUILDING INCREASE.

"We find Oakland In 1922 at the peak of the building program" said Sheldon. "It was only a year or eo ago that the city was shaking Itself loose from the trouble following the war when thousands of men were thrown out of work. Building is now going ahead by leaps and bounds. "The skyline of the city is constantly changing. There are new buildings everywhere standing as testimonials to the growth and advancement of our community." Sheldon then listed for the membership the new structures planned and in course of construction, taking as an example The TRIBUNE building of twenty stories.

He called attention to the old quarters of the publication and complimented the owners on the growth and development of the journal. MANY NEW STRUCTURES. Among the new edifices scheduled for next year, according to Sheldon are the Scottish? Rite Temple, to cost more than a million; the new Elks cluh, to cost more than a. million; the Ambassador building, to cost a quarter of a million; the proponed Federal building, to cost ii million and a fluarter; the possibility of a new court house and the Athens Athletic club. Fred E.

Reed devoted his attention "Our Homes," explaining his adventures with an out-of-town man whom he guided about the city yesterday morning and the conversation the two tourists had. Reed Impressed the members with a realization of the beauties of the city, its position in world trade, Its climate and above all he lauded the home spirit that predominates the community. Dr. (Snaps enlarged on the' Spiritual aspect of the city's development. He took as his theme the fact that a house is not a home unless there is a spiritual aspect to Its environment.

Dr. Snape counted all the advancement of the city for naught If the builders overlooked the part that God plays in the work. THEATER PARTY PLAN. Prior to the Thanksgiving Pay exercises, the directors of the club ann.unced a deficit of $400 in the treasury and urged the members to assist In making the theater Iiarty at the Fulton on December 6 a success in order to clear up the dobts incurred by the club. Announcement was also made that Tuesday, December 19, has een set aplde for the annual Christmas Jinx, when members of the organization will act as hosts to Oakland kiddies who are orphaned.
