Saturday night December 22 Emma Lewis was visiting her sister About 'I o'clock she remarked to her brotlur-iu-lav that she was going to Btep ont and would be back in a few minutes A gun shot was heard a few minutes after she left tlie bouse but to many Christmas guns were being fired by the colored people thst no notice was taken of it A reasonable length of time passed and she failed to return Kearcli vss instituted and a Bhort distance from the house blood was discovered on the ground near a fence and signs showed she was thro over the fenca Following the tracks and signs that were made by dragging the body it led through a cotton patch about two hundred yards There she was thrown over another fence and dragged through the woods about one hundred yards to a large clay root and concealed there by placing leaves and pine tups over her body The coroner held an inquest 8unday morning The jury's verdict was that she came to her death by a gun-shot wound at the hands of one Fed Moigan Morgan was the cause of Fiuma leaving her huiband several years ago and she had concluded to Rave Morgan and return to her husband It is thought that Morgan visited her that night ana she persisting in her intentions rather than it should be so murdered her Josinli Blunt assaulted Ilenry Long with a razor and inflicted several ugly and painful wounda However they are not considered dangerous With the exception of these incidents Christmas has passed off very pleasantly in our little town Fed Morgan is now in jail Blood was found on his arm and the tracks correspond with the measure ot his last the 24 th imtant a shooting scrape occurred here in which a noted and desperate negro was shot through the head the ball entering his left jaw and ranging downward where it Btill remains The carried to Walker county One of the gang ban made a full confession and states that the negro who did the killing was named Walter Jackson and rnys further ihat they hud formed a band of eight who they could get their hands on not stopping at any crime When the band was formed they had sworn to murder or hold any one thpy came across that had any valuables or money on tbeir person and had thus far carried out their oath The crimes they had committed were numberless but never before had they committed murder The men ho wen implicated in this most foul murder were closely guarded all night Barnwell yestrrday which was caused by the interference of James Davis a prominent young lawyer with A Oweup another lawyer who was beating a little son for shooting off Roman candles which bad be- given to him by Davis In the nurning Owens whipped his son and in the afternoon was again besting him unmercifully when Davis took the child away from its father and was walking away when A Owens tho brother of the boy ran up and without asking a question shot Davis in the back with a 38-oalibre Colt's pistol and then fled The wound was mortal Davis was the most prominent young lawyrr in that
