SANTA CRUZ SENTINEL Thursday, October 14, 2004 OBITUARIES REMEMBRANCES Jacqueline Houck Services are Saturday for Jacqueline Marie Houck of Santa Cruz, who died Oct. 7 in a vehicle crash near Bradley. She was 20. Jacqueline and her sister, Rachel, died when their Chrysler PT Cruiser hit a semitrailer truck head-on on Highway 101 in south Monterey JACQUELINE County. HOUCK Ms.

Houck was born Aug. 9, 1984, in Ventura to Charles T. and Carol M. Houck. She grew up in Ojai, where she attended Nordhoff High School.

After graduating, she moved to Santa Cruz to pursue her interest in art, surfing and skateboards. She also loved horses. She traveled Europe extensively with her sister, Rachel, and was planning to go to Costa Rica with her boyfriend, Kaleb Stevens of Santa Cruz. She is survived by parents, Chuck Houck of Agoura Hills and Carol of Ojai; brother Greg Houck, stepmother Vikki Houck, stepbrother Taylor Brow and stepsister Paige Brow, all of Agoura Hills; grandparents Pat Houck of Illinois, and Charlotte and Larry Kennett of Laguna; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be 2 p.m.

Saturday at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Rachel Houck Services are Saturday for Rachel Veronique Houck of Santa Cruz, who died Oct. 7 in a vehicle crash near Bradley. Ms. Houck was born April 14, 1980, in Ventura to Charles T. and Carol M. Houck. She grew up in Ojai, where she attended Nordhoff High School.

After graduating, she moved to Santa Cruz to pursue her interest in writing and further her education. Her interests included surfing, singing and writing poetry. She traveled in Europe extensively with her sister, Jacqueline, and had lived in Italy RAECHEL during the past HOUCK year. She was working toward a career as a teacher. She is survived by parents, Chuck Houck of Agoura Hills and Carol Houck of Ojai; brother Greg Houck, stepmother Vikki Houck, stepbrother Taylor Brow and stepsister Paige Brow, all of Agoura Hills; grandparents Pat Houck of Illinois, and Charlotte and Larry Kennett of Laguna; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and her Italian family, Parreli Nuti.

Over the years, he had been a member of many bowling leagues and was the National State Bowling Champion in 1955. Contributions to the American Diabetes Association are preferred. JOHN LAWRENCE PAGEN, JR. Surrounded by his loving family, passed away on October 2, 2004, after a long illness. He was born in Washington D.C. on October 31, 1921, to parents Lydia Hyde Pagen, and John Lawrence Pagen.

Jack was educated at both Repton and Hackley Schools, and then went to Stanford University. At Stanford Jack excelled on the soccer and track teams. He also enjoyed the fellowship of lifelong friends in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Jack left Stanford in 1942 to join the Stanford Flying Indians in the Marine Corps. Upon completing his training, he instructed other Marine pilots, and went on to serve in the Pacific, attaining the rank of Major USMCR.

His favorite plane to fly was the Corsair. Jack returned to Stanford to complete his education in 1946. After finishing college, Jack married Janet Hanscom Seattle, December 27, 1947. They first settled in the Seabright area of Santa Cruz, where his family. had property.

From there, Jack and Janet moved to Palo Alto to raise their three children until they moved back to Santa Cruz in 1972. During that time, many friends and family enjoyed trips to the Northwest, and Mexico, in Jack's Piper Comanche. Jack was employed as a personnel manager at Hiller Helicopters as well as FMC. He was an active member of Rotary, and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship. He also founded the Toastmasters Club in Mountain View.

His loving wife, Janet; his son, Geoffrey, of Portland, Oregon, and his daughter, Susan McCrary, of Menlo Park: daughter-in-law, Susan Scharfman, and son-in-law, John McCrary, survive him. Jack was most proud of his four grandchildren, Jaime Pagen, and Chelsea, Ashley, and Jenny Lawrence. Jack is also survived by his sister, Patricia Hebbron, of Friday Harbor, Washington, and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Terry, and his son, John Lawrence Pagen, Ill. family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, or a charity of your choice.

A memorial service for Jack has been scheduled for this Saturday, October 16, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at Oakwood Memorial Chapel in Santa Cruz. Sw80502 FUNERAL RAECHEL JACQUELINE HOUCK Rachel and Jackie are remembered for their beautiful smiles and SHARON SMEENK The morning of October 10, 2004 witnessed Sharon Anita Smeenk's submission to Ovarian Cancer after a six-and-a-half year battle. She died peacefully in her sleep comforted by the presence of her family around her.

The most recent successor in a distinguished line of matriarchs, her accomplishments as a mother, aunt, and friend will continue to inspire everyone lucky enough to have known her. A fierce survivor, Sharon is survived by her husband Robert, her two sons, Major Ken Smeenk of the U.S. Air force and Captain Jeff Smeenk of the Stockton Fire Department, their wives Kimberly and Kiana, her four grandchildren, her cherished nieces and nephews, and the memories of all who knew and loved her. Born and raised in Oakland on December 18, 1942, she graduated from Fremont High School where she met her husband Robert. They were married on June 9, 1962, and later moved to Livermore where their son Ken was born.

Jeff was born during their relatively short stay in Wenatchee Washington, but the boys were raised in Portland Oregon. Today, Aptos continues to serve as the family hub since their return to California in 1985. Sharon treasured everything feminine. She loved reading good books, watching movies, and going to plays, (she attended the San Jose Repertory Theater for the last eleven years). She loved walks on the beach, the gathering of friends and family, and being with her grandchildren.

She collected teapots, adored fine crystal, and listening to Neil Diamond. Sharon worked several jobs sustaining her family, but it was the ten years spent Cabrillo College's Admissions and Records that meant the most to her. The friendships she formed there help sustain her to the end. There will be a gathering of family and friends at Benito Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel (1050 Cayuga St. Santa Cruz, Ca.) at 11:00 a.m.

He was born to Joseph and Josephine Vierra, pioneering Santa Clara County Dairy Farmers.

He attended Santa Clara High School before entering into the US Army Air Corps during the second world war. While in the US Army he was a radioman aboard B-24 aircraft. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was a recipient of numerous awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Good Conduct Medal, Asia Pacific Campaign ribbon, and Oak Leaf charismatic energy. Rachel was known for her angelic voice, love of traveling, and her extraordinary writing ability. She had just returned from Italy after a year of working as an au pair where she learned to speak Italian.

Jackie was a talented artist who loved to paint, draw, write poetry and spend time with her boyfriend Kaleb. They planned to move to Costa Rica next month to start their lives together. Both sisters loved to skateboard, ride cruisers to the beach, and spend time with close friends. They lived their lives to the fullest and had no regrets. They were teachers of the heart and they positively influenced the lives of many.

They are survived by their mother Carol Houck of Ojai, father Chuck Houck of Agoura Hills, as well as their extended family and friends. Services will be held for the family on Saturday, Oct. 16 in Ventura, and Sunday Oct 24 at 3 p.m. at Frederick Part in Santa Cruz. All friends are welcomed to attend this celebration of their lives.
