Macon Ttltgraph A Ntw Sun Aug 21 1977 III Ratings Show Change of Listened SUSAN SAINT JAMES 1 MA WDDO however got more cumulative listeners in the total survey area than (in order) WCRY-FM WBML WDEN-FM WNEX and WDEN-AM "Cume" or cumulative listeners tell the number of people who listened at least once to a radio station during a specified time period The "cume" is distinct from shares" which define the per cent of the total metro listening audience In the seven-county survey area the clear overall winner was WMAZ-AM and FM For WMAZ administrative coordinator Don Me-Gouirk affiliated with a station blessed with 50000 watts of power success in the rating books is an old story not helped or hurt in the book by any one demographic" McGouirk says "We go more with trends" WMAZ-AM plays "MOR" or middle-of-the-road music with a heavy concentration of news The FM station has a programmed "hit-parade" format designed by a Los Angeles-based producer WMAZ's logical competitor in terms of programming if not power is WNEX which programs 24 hours-a-day and has 1000 watts traditional strength has been its heavy teen-age listenership says station manager A1 Lowe WNEX has the third-highest share of the metro teenage audience behind WDDO and WMAZ-FM In addition WNEX increased its listenership In men and women 18 and over according to the Aprii-May Arbitron survey Clearly says Lowe there's room in the Macon market for WNEX and WMAZ Just going to continue doing what we're doing" he says Lowe is considering however subscribing to the PULSE ratings (an Arbitron competitor which wDl soon conduct a telephone survey in Macon) He's convinced that his audience is larger than the Arbitron April-May survey indicates At WIBB oldest black-oriented station operations manager Hampton Swain says his station is adapting to the challenge of WDDO "I think WDDO is definitely competing with us for the same audience and for the same dollars" Swain says accomplished what I expected them to accomplish being a new station" Furthermore Swain thinks listeners that may have temporarily abandoned WIBB in favor of WDDO have come back home He says WIBB is considering subscribing to the upcoming PULSE survey At WDEN (AM and FM) and WBML Macon's two country stations the name of the game is Here WBML appears to have made significant inroads on the Macon country audience Outside of metro WDEN appears to have the edge According to a survey conducted by ARBITRON country listeners are in the 250000-plus income bracket than average radio listeners 55 per cent of country listeners have investments of some sort A greater per cent of country listeners own their own homes rather than The Fiku FamJy: incyTft nok nmnml TheyYt Not Salted TheyVs Just Plain Nuts MaoonMni By ANGELO LEWIS MM Nm Writer Behind the number of your radio dial Macon station managers wage technological wars to try and attract listeners says Arbitron executive Constance Musso "live and die by the ratings" "For some guy in New says WIBB station manager Hunnicutt are the only indication he may have as to what's going on" Hie current Arbitron ratings (Arbitron is a national firm that does marketing research for media) have recently been sent to subscribing Macon radio sta-'tions Drawn from a survey of 1243 Macon area 11s-tencrs the survey as conducted during April and May of 1977 Macon station managers agree that the big story In 'this year's rating book is the emergence and success -of the "disco-soul" format of WDDO "If you want to look at (the ratings) as black and white there's only one station in the market that's 'made any appreciable says WBML station manager Jack Teiken WDDO" WDDO signed on in February resulting from an FCC regulation that prohibited stations from broad-casting the same programming over its FM and AM channels Formerly WDDO was WCRY-AM and played the same "beautiful format of its Piedmont Communications affiliate WCRY-FM In addition to the FCC ruling it was felt that the WCRY-AM and FM stations were competing for the same audience says station manager Fred Newton It was decided to go to The decision to go disco gave WDDO a 17 overall share of listeners in the metro -market The new station also grabbed a 306 share of the metro market teens ages 12 to 17 In the per cent of the total metro listening audience that listened to a particular station WDDO came out a clear No 1 shares" however don't tell the whole story In the seven-county total survey area WDDO with its meager 250 watts lagged behind WMAZ-AM and FM and its most obvious competitor black-oriented
