I Guidry Paints 3-1 Series Edge for Yankees LOS ANGELES (UPI) Ron Guidry a Picasso in pinstripes painted the Los Angeles Dodgers into a comer with an artistic four-hitter Saturday and pitched the New York Yankees to a 4-2 victory which moved them to within one triumph of their 21st World Series championship Aided by the hitting of Reggie Jackson who had a double and a home run and the defensive play of left fielder Lou Piniella who robbed Ron Cey of a home run Guidry manhandled the Dodgers and practically left them for dead in their quest to win the World Series The Yankees seeking their first World Championship since 1962 will try to wrap it up Sunday with lefthander Don Gullett on the mound while the Dodgers will go with righthander Don Sutton The Dodgers though are faced with the grim statistic that only three teams in baseball history have ever rebounded from a 3-1 deficit to win the Series not out of it said philosophic Los Angeles Manager Tom Lasorda it was done before it can be done again" After winning Friday game behind right-hander Mike Torrez Yankee Manager Billy Martin felt he had the upper hand because his meal ticket Guidry would be working the fourth game on five days rest Martin was right Guidry survived a two-run homer in the third inning by Dave Lopes and went on to allow the Dodgers only two hits both by Cey over the final six innings With his fastball as hot as the 82-degree weather Guidry struck out seven and retired the Dodgers in order in four separate innings brag enough about Guidry" said Martin one of the hardest throwers in all of baseball and just as gutty out there as a guy can be" victory is perhaps the final chapter in an amazing success story this season In spring training the Yankees weren't sure whether he would be a starter or reliever and in fact he began the season in the bullpen But once he got a chance to start he emerged as the club's most dependable pitcher winning 16 games and posting a 282 earned run average just wanted to prove myself to the people in spring training who didn't think I could do it" said the soft-spoken 27-year-old left-hander got a little tired around the fifth and sixth innings but I got my composure back in the seventh and eighth" don't underestimate what this man did out there said Lasorda won a lot of games a lot of big games when they needed it and today he pitched one beautiful Guidry didn't need too much help from his defense as the Dodgers failed to connect solidly most of the game But the one big play he got from Piniella seemed to take the starch out of Los Angeles' attack After falling behind 3-0 in the second inning the Dodgers appeared to be getting to Guidry in the third when pitcher Rick Rhoden doubled with one out and Lopes ended an O-for-13 Series slump with a 400-foot homer to straightaway center Then in the fourth Cey led off by hitting a rising liner to left which appeared to be headed into the seats for a game-tying homer But Piniella not known for his defensive prowess leaped high against the wall and ex- (See Yanks Page 4B) fflarmi Srlritraplj as Nrhia SUNDAY MORNING OCTOBER 16 1977 Section Scorecard Business Yellow Jackets le Aebera to whip Auburn 38-21 Despite the disastrous start the Tigers rallied in the second half and might have had a chance to gain the upper hand but for a fine pass interception early in the fourth stanza by defensive back Don Patterson of Gray Auburn had closed the gap to 28-14 at this point and stood just five yards from another score The questionable fumble came on the eighth iibum had tried three plays and punted Tech tried three plays and also punted Receiver Alan Hardin shading his eyes from a bright sun at the Auburn 15 retreated Iran the ball at the last moment then made no effort to fall on it as it bounced around When Henry Johnson did cover the pigskin at a ve it to the Jackets the three an official Same Errors Tire Barfield ATLANTA tired of offering the excuse following every game that we made too many Doug Barfield young head football coach remarked after 38-21 loss to Georgia Tech It had been a difficult day for Barfield and the Plainsmen now 3-3 Everything bad that could happen DID happen There was a questionable fumble on a punt that gave the Jackets the ball on three And a late-hit penalty that set Tech up in good field position to score again And a poorly thrown pass that led to an interception and a third score After that it much matter But when the Tigers rekindled some slight hope their quarterback John Crane threw two interceptions and then fumbled the ball away during three consecutive possessions About all a coach can do after a day like this is grin and bear it which Barfield did And then vow that everybody will work harder to see that it happen again come next week Despite the loss to Tech Auburn has had a better season than most experts expected But unless the miserable mistakes can be eliminated the Plainsmen will be hard pressed to win another contest They have Florida State coming up next week in Tallahassee at night And then there is Florida and Mississippi State and Georgia and Alabama Not a breather in the bunch Auburn like Tech is suffering from the absence of a top-notch quarterback Crane completed only four of 17 passes Saturday to his own receivers while tossing three to Tech defenders He did manage to pick up 44 yards in 17 runs but most of this was the result of determination to stop freshman James Brooks of Warner Robins The ends often tackled Brooks whether he had the ball or not leaving open lanes for the less elusive Crane It was a bit surprising that Brooks didn't run the ball more often (nine times) or that no passes were thrown in his direction On passing plays he was a blocker But he has been hurt the past two weeks and Barfield is likely to work him more into his offense in the weeks ahead On the basis of what I saw Saturday Brooks is the me thread on which Auburn's season hangs As for Tech the Jackets got the same kind of early (See Harley Bowers Page 5B) else on the premises as- All 54961 fans and evi sumed the ball had hit But close halftime inspection of film taken of the play by an Atlanta television station showed that Hardin did not touch the ball And Hardin vigorously denied after the game that he touched it insisted that he touch it" Auburn Coach Doug Barfield reported I know who did unless it was Jeff The film only showed that it might have been Gray Then again it might not have been Gray Or anybody else Whether the ball hit Hardin or Gray or nobody it started a dismal chain of events that quickly took Auburn out of what was supposed to have been a close game Quarterback Gary Lanier scored for Tech three plays after the and Johnny Smith booted the extra point The next time Auburn punted a late hit gave Tech the ball on their 42 The Jackets took advantage of this fine field position to score in seven plays Rugged Rodney Lee set up the tally with a 34-yard run to the five and Eddie Lee Ivery went over from the four Smith converted Six plays after the next kickoff a pass by Auburn quarterback John Crane went right to Patterson who returned 31 yards to the 46 On the ninth day (four days into the second period) the Jackets tallied on a five-yard pass from Ivery to Drew Hill kick made it 21-0 And that all After Jorge Portela missed a 39-yard field al Tech wheeled 80 yards in 10 plays for another score 21-yard scamper put the ball at the six and Ivery who had 41 yards in four runs during the march scored from there Smith converted Auburn finally scored with 2:02 left in the half on a 15-yard gallop by Joe Cribbs with Portela kicking the PAT was embarrassed by the way we played in the first Barfield exclaimed Tech played excellent football I
