Wednesday on Illinois 13 near Country Club Road. Sheriff dep uties said a car driven by James R. Gogue, 20, of rural Murphysboro was eastbound on Illinois 13 when it col lided with a car driven by John D. Groves, 50, of rural Murphysboro. Groves had stopped his vehicle at a stop sign on Country Club Road.

The auto then entered the intersection and attempted to make a left turn onto the westbound lane of Illinois 13 when the vehicles collided. Gogue was uninjured. Groves is in stable condition. No tickets were issued. Two brothers were killed at 8:04 p.m.

Frazer, 19, of Percy, and two passengers, Darrel Frazer, 16, and Kenneth A. Rice, 20, both ot Chester, were northbound on Illinois 4, when Frazer lost control of the car. The car left the road, slid into an embankment, struck a tree, and overturned before coming to rest in a creek bed.

Rice was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and later transferred to St. Louis University Hospital, where was in the intensive care unit Thursday. His condition was unknown Thursday. The accident is under investigation. Murphysboro Thieves took $1,900 worth of items MOUNT VERNON Harvey Sammons, 82, of 1410 Wilshire Drive died at 12:25 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1988, in Good Samaritan Regional Health Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Hughey funeral Home, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:30 a.m.

He was born June 7, 1906, in Jef ferson County to Claude and Lizzie (Sledge) Sammons. He married Hazel Kline in 1940. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, James Sammons of Carbondale and William Sammons of Louisville, one brother, Jess Sammons of Mount Vernon; and one sister, Ruth Phillips of Mount Vernon. Visitation will be Irom a to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mrs. Cook was born July 27, 1926, in Golconda to Harvev and Grace (Keller) Webster. She married Clarence Cook in 1964.

He survives. Other survivors include one son, Robert Fiedler of Minooka; two daughters, Carla Green of Eugene, and Barbara Junkins of Morris; one sister, Jean Bettnke of Royalton; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Midway Court died at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, 1988, in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home, with burial in Friendship Cemetery in Goreville.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, with Masonic rites at 7 p.m. Mr. Tignor was retired from the United States Army. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and Masonic Lodge 89 AF AM, was a Methodist, and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He was born Dec. 13, 1928, in Oklahoma to Jess and Myrtle (Bluford) Tignor. He married Freda Cash in 1982. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Robert Tignor of Batesville, two daughters, Iris Mason and Carol Watkins, both of Batesville; two adopted children; two stepdaughters, Linda Howard and Claudia Quarta, both of Marion; his mother of California; three brothers, Ralph Tignor of California and Bill and Troy Tignor, both of Texas; two sisters, Bonnie and Rosemary Tignor, both of Texas; five grand-children; and five stepgrandchildren.

Two brothers preceded him in death. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stayed the execution Thursday of a man who killed an inmate in a dispute over a diamond ring, marking the second time the court has blocked the man's execution against his wishes. Mr. Sheridan was a retired farm er. He was a member of Ina Mission ary Baptist Church. He was born Dec. 1, 1902, in Ken tucky to James and Lora Sheridan.

He married Flora Fletcher. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Bob Sheridan of Ina, Cortney Sheridan Jr. of Ava and Larry Sheridan of Benton; three daughters, Florene Milliner of Ina, Mildred Watts of Channahon and Beatrice Kash of Benton; one sister, Blanch Mentler of Jacksonville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Grace Butler SPARTA Grace Butler, 86, of Sunland, formerly of Sparta, died Tuesdav, Nov. 15, 1988, in Diana ynn Lodge in Sunland. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Caledonia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m.

Sunday in King Funeral Home in Sparta. Memorials may be made to medi cal research. Mrs. Butler was a homemaker. She was a member of Westmi nister Presbyterian Church.

She was born March 16, 1902, in Sparta to Robert and Dora (Gilli- brand) McMichael. She married Lloyd Butler in 1919. He preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, rancine Higgins of Sunland. Two brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death.

He was a member of Union Hi Christian Church in Carbondale. He was born Dec. 28, 1903, in Dutch Ridge to William and Louiza (Nance) Forby. He married Maggie Holder in 1930 She survives. Other survivors include one daugh ter, Juanita Reed of Carbondale; one brother, Ted Forby of Makanda; one sister, Lawnada Everetts of Car bondale; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

One daughter, three brothers, one sister and one grandchild preceded him in death. Bernard Batts WEST FRANKFORT Bernard Jack Batts, 78, of 218 W. Lindell St died at 3:49 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1988, in Union Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Parker-Reedy Funeral Home, with burial in Tower Heights Ceme tery. Visitation will be after 6 p.m today at the funeral home. Mr. Batts was a violin maker.

He was born in Ewing. He married Geneva Balev. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Diana Overy of Streator and Judith Biggs of Sesser; one sister, Olive Batts of Benton; one half brother, W.C. Perry of Florida; one half sister, June Doyle of Ionia, six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was a Protestant. He was born July 21, 1913, in Scheller to Phillip and Minnie (Ko-linski) Lemons. Nelson was a boilermaker and former CIPS employee who had worked in Grand Tower. He was a member of Boilermakers Union Local 92 in Southgate, and Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ontario, and was an Army Reserves veteran. He was born March 5, 1939, in Har risburg to Joe and Helen (Hatfield) Nelson. He married Sharon Giffin. She sur vives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Linda Nelson of Ontario and Lisa Crofts of RanchoCuca Monea. his mother of Murphysboro; one brother, Jack Nelson of Murphysboro; and one great-grandparent, Nellie Hatfield of Ontario. Nicholson had been employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and Consumer Steel Corp. in Racine, Wis. He was a member of the former Eugene Jones American Legion Post 936, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was born April 22, 1915, in Shu- qualak, to Allen and Elizabeth (Spirulle) Nicholson. He married Mary Robinson.

Survivors include one brother, Ellis Nicholson of Murphysboro; and two sisters, Lonie Farmer and Eria Jackson, both of Murphysboro. Two brothers and one sister pre ceded him in death. Jackson Funeral Home in Carbon dale is in charge of arrangements. to die Oct. 4 for the 1980 beating death of Karen Roberts, a former girlfriend, but the 8th Circuit stayed that execution, saying it needed more time to determine if Smith was competent to abandon his appeals.

Authorities said Baker was killed in a dispute over a diamond ring, although Smith said he committed the murder so he could be executed. Police said the victim returned home from work at 12:35 a.m. and discovered that stereo equipment, a video-cassette recorder, clothing and jewelry were missing.

Du Quoin An Omaha, man was ticketed for driving under the influence and not wearing a seat belt after his truck collided with a train Thursday morning. Police said a truck driven by David McMaster, 33, of Omaha was northbound on U.S. 51 at 1:37 a.m. when it collided with a coal train car on the Illinois Central Railroad tracks. McMaster and a passenger, Kimberly White, 25, of rural Pinckneyville, had major injuries and were taken to Marshall Browning Hospital.

White was ticketed for not wearing a seat belt. State Police An 88-year-old Mulkeytown man was in stable condition in Union Hospital in West Frankfort after his vehicle hit the back side of a semitractor-trailer on Illinois 149, 2l2 miles west of Illinois 37 at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. State police in Du Quoin said William Flatt was driving westbound on the road when he came over a hill and ran into the westbound truck, which was moving slow due to a mechanical difficulty. The driver of the truck, Marion Roberts, 46 of Tamaroa, was uninjured.
