Satnuol L. Hayden, former dis trict attorney, and a prominent crimin al lawyor, died Wodnouday night after a few hours' lllnass, from an affection of tho heart. Ho had been unwell for a few days, and consulted a physician, and in his last momenta had two prominent Sa lem physicians attending him. Ho passed away at 10:15, in tho prosonco of hla family, Mrs. Hayden and his young son, and mother-in-law, Mrs.

J. F. Miller. Deceased was a son of Hon. Don.

Hayden, of this city, and waa borujn tho old family homestead botwoon Eola and Independence, April 18, 1807, and wan nearly 35 years old. Ho bogan reading law when qulto young at tho law ofllco of W. II. Holmes, and at tho ago of 21 was admitted to practice. Ho noon dovolopod marked abilities, and mado especial success of his criminal practlco, so that in 189C ho wns elected district at- tornoy by a largo Republican majority in this district.

His wldo gonoral education, finished off with a- course nt tho Stato Univer sity, mado him moro than avorugo lawyor. Ho served with a groat deal of ability us public prosecutor. Ho was law partnor of John H. MoNary from 1894 to 1901, and recently of I. N.

Ho is survived hy his father and mother, ono sister, Miss Estollo Hay-don, and two brothers, William and McClollan. Ho was actttatod by a high sense of honor. and his word passed for anything was as good as tho boat bond.
