The loss is valued at around $1,900. Police say the burglars got into the office by breaking part of the back door into Fatal shooting at CENTREVILLE (AP) Police say 25-year-old Orlando Smith may have known the person who knocked at his door then shot him to death. Smith's grandmother, Ora Kidd, said she heard the knock and gunshots on Wednesday morning, then found the victim dying on the living room floor. Mewes CARBONDALE Duane Mewes, 91, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1995, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church in Carbondale, with Father Carl Scherrer officiating.

A committal service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Calvary Cemetery in Pierron. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale. A prayer service will be at 5 p.m.

today at the funeral home. Mr. Mewes was a public speaking instructor for Dale Carnegie. He managed the William F. Mewes and Co.

General Store from 1946 to 1953. He was a graduate of Quincy College, Greenville High School and St. Louis University. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Carbondale and was a former member of the Highland Notary Club.

One of his accomplishments is a diary that he kept from 1924 to 1974. A series of his articles from 1924 to 1956 appeared in the Highland News Leader. He was born Aug. 1, 1904 in Pierron, to William Frederick and Caroline (Hartlieb) Mewes. i He married Faye Budslick on June 12, 1954 in Mount Vernon.

She survives of Carbondale. Other survivors include two sons, Brother of the Holy Cross, William R. Ardeuser Mewes of Richmond, and Frederick Mewes of Tucson, one stepson, James Paul Winfree of Carbondale; and one granddaughter, Alyssa May Winfree of Murphysboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald Mewes, and one sister, Mother Mary Teresa. Ruth Anna Neuhaus HOYLETON Ruth Anna Neuhaus, 66, entered rest at 6:28 p.m.

Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1995 at St. Mary's Health Center, St. Louis. She had attained the age of 66 years, 5 months and seven days, having been born July 20, 1929 in Ferrin, to Addin and Anna Tyberent nee Reinkensmeyer.

She was united in marriage on Aug. 1, 1948 to Nelson Neuhaus at Ferrin, and he survives. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on their dairy farm. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton, and the LWML. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Carol Worker and husband, Carlos, Mary Wetzel and husband, Bob, Linda Harre and husband, Jim, all of Nashville, and Dennis Neuhaus and wife, Pam, of Hoyleton; three sisters, Esther Boester of Covington, Edna Boester and husband, Ewart, of Okawville and Helen Tyberent and wife, Erna, of Ferrin; 10 grandchildren, Kevin and Kim Woker, Tony and Amy Wetzel, Angie, Morgan and Jenna Harre and Stacey, Jenee and Megan Neuhaus; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton with the Rev. Wayne Knolhoff officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Krupp Funeral Home in Nashville and from noon until the time of services Saturday at the church. Mrs. Goodwin was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Herrin. She was born May 17, 1919 in lerrin, to Leonard and Udell (Mon roe) Tackett. She married Carl J. Goodwin on Dec.

13, 1938 in Missouri. He survives of Herrin. Other survivors include one son, Marion E. Goodwin of Marion; two daughters and one son-in-law, Mildred Gehler of Herrin and Mary nn and John Stonebraker of Dallas, Texas; two grandchildren, Nick Gehler of Dallas and Jamie and Terry Sanborn of Alpharetta, one great-grandchild, Justin Sanborn of Alpharetta; one brother and sister-in- aw, Marion and Betty Tackitt of Marion; one sister and brother-in- aw, Mildred and Charles Gunn of Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her in death.

Fox was a barber in Elkville or more than 60 years. He was a member of the Elkville Baptist Church, a 50 year mason at the De Soto Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Eastern Star. He was born Aug. 9, 1907 in Elk ville, to Ed and Edith (Flint) Fox. He married Libby Lollis on Oct.

5, 930 in Carbondale. She passed away Dec. 14, 1980. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Charlotte Baker of Murphysboro and Sue and Jerry Martie of Elkville; two sisters, Lo-rene Brayshaw and Lois Seibert, both of Elkville; six grandchildren, Dan Baker, Ted Baker and Susan Baker, all of Murphysboro, Dale Martie, stationed with the U.S. Army in Hungary and Bosnia, Julie Martie of Orlando, and Doug Martie of Elkville; three great-grand children; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters and a son-in-law. McCarty Ray Pool MARION McCarty Ray Pool, 33, of 2000 Princeton Lane, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1995 in Herrin Hospital. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m.

Saturday at Christian Life Center Church in Herrin, with the Rev. Brent Fitzgerald officiating. It was Mr. Pool's request that he be cremated. There will be no visita tion.

Parker-Reedy Funeral Home of West Frankfort is in charge of ar rangements. Mr. Pool was a member of the Christian Life Center Church of Herrin. He was born May 9, 1962 in St. Louis, to Arthur and Carolyn (Tree- ce) Pool.

Survivors include his mother, Carolyn Baker of West Frankfort; his father, Vincent Pool of Oxford, two brothers, Vincent Pool of Oxford and Hansie Drebot of Wash ington, D.C.; two sisters, Tanya Loving and Alice Pool, both of Oxford; and his grandfather, Harold Pool of Oxford. Evin 'Fat' McGee HERRIN Evin Wesley McGee, 83, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1995 in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m.

Saturday at Van Natta Funeral Home in Her rin, with the Rev. Jim Wright officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home with Masonic rites at 7 p.m.

Mr. McGee was a member of the First Baptist Church in Energy and was a third degree Mason as a 50-year member of Herrin's Prairie Masonic Lodge No. 693. He retired as a car salesmen from Brewster Mo tors in Herrin. He was also a U.S.

Army veteran. He was born Jan. 23, 1912 in Her rin, to John and Pearl (Bandy) McGee. He married Wilda Haney on Feb. 8, 1934 in Herrin.

She died on Feb. 18, 1995. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Karen McGee of Herrin; one grandson, Da vid McGee of Johnston City; one sis ter-in-law, Jewell Baker of Herrin; and three nieces, Doris Elliott of En ergy, Peggy Shryock of Belleville and Peggy Killman of Carterville. His wife, parents, stepbrother, Bill McPherson, and cousin, Harold McGee, preceded him in death. Mary L.

Mitchell HERRIN Mary L. Mitchell, 85, of Des Plaines, formerly of Her rin, Mesa, and Chicago, died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1995, in Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Mrs.

Mitchell was born Oct. 4 1910, in Tolu, to Lacy and Lucy (Tackwell) Hardin. She married Angelo Mitchell in 1927 Benton, 111. He died Dec. 27, 1979.

They were married 52 years. She later married Bioggio Amarto He is deceased. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Herrin and was a sales clerk at Wie bolts Department Store in Chicago. She is survived by one daughter. Rosemary Romani of pes Plaines two grandchildren, Linda Ruedeger of Bamngton and Mary Lou Marce of Grays Lake; five great-grandchil dren; and one sister, Ruth Trudnak of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands. Services will be at 10 a.m. Satur day at Our Lady of Mount Carme Catholic Church in Herrin. The Rev Brian Barker will officiate. Visitation will be from after 8:30 to 10 a.m Saturday at Johnson-Hughes Funera Home in Herrin.

Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Surviving are three sons, Bennie Lewis Jr. and Tommie Lewis, both of Miami and Joe Craig Jr. of Harnsburg; two daughters, Willene Ector of Chicago and Camilla Jones of Carbondale; one daughter-in-law, Connie Lewis of Miami; two neph ews, Ernest Brookins and George Mack both of Miami; 27 grand children; 1 5 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves to mourn her a host of other relatives and friends. Virginia Mae Holshouser CAIRO Virginia Mae Holhous- er, 72, died Thursday, Dec.

28, 1995 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. She was born March 20, 1922 in America, 111., the daughter of the late Clifford and Beulah Johnson Dover. She was a member of the Assem bly of God Church in Mounds. She is survived by her daughters Joan Marie Stuart of Cairo and Ella Mae Nalley of Grand Chain; two sis ters, Edna Marie Dover of Cairo and Sharon K.

Kearney of Cairo; two brothers, Arvid E. Dover of Skokie and Donald L. Dover of St. Louis six grandchildren, several great grandchildren and other relatives. Services will be at 1 p.m.
