Arrangements are incomplete at Crain Funeral Home. Farmers Continued from IB herbicide if different crops are planted in a field each year. The Cernys said no-till farming was conceived in Southern Illinois at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center, an experimental farming sight for the University of Illinois extension service staff. The Cernys began their no-till farming in the 1970s. They said the Union County Soil and Water Conservation District encourages farmers to try it.

The district provides farmers with a lot of technical assistance, they said, such as sun-eying for farm ponds and contoured fields. "In the hills we went for it (no-till) right away," Lawrence said. "But they still think it's nuts in the prairie." No-till is an example of how farming changes. The Cernys said they think it is important to go to the fairs, field days and progress shows to keep up with the "dizzying" technological changes and other advances in seed varieties and other farming aspects. And they keep their eyes open.

"We're asking that the cafeteria and gymnasium be turned over first, so that we can have our suppliers start delivering furniture and be ready to move it directly into the classrooms as soon as they are ready," he said. The plan calls for construction at Southside School to start about the same time the crews are finishing work on the new elementary school.

Hindman said that as soon as school is out for the summer, demolition of the elementary school building will begin.
