the si lv place with- A California's strong position agriculturally, is strikingly shown In the annual sumniary of the Federal Department of Agriculture just published. This strong position is because of the variety of this state's agricultural products. The summary shows that California again is second rank among all states of the Union in value of farm crops. Texas, the state of greatest area In the Union and with probably twice 'the tillable area that California has, ranks who have followed the rankings of states during the last ten years will readily realize what a. tremendous climb in rank California has made during the process of general deflation In farm crop throughout the world.

In normal conditions before the war California's rank fluctuated rom l4th to 16th. This' state then was hardly within calling distance of the famous agricultural of Iowa, Illinois, Qhio, Missouri, etc. But with the -heavy deflation In staple crojis, such as corn and other cereals, California's specialties, such as fruits and vegetables, have held this state at a comparatively high rank while others -liave dropped tremendously. According to the crop report, the total vaj.ue of California crops for 1921 was $350,519,000. Texas was first with $424,471,000, Illinois was third, New York was fourth and the famed old agricultural state of Iowa had dropped to sixth place.

California's variety has meant safety. -4t Is a factor which Is drawing thousands of discouraged PEITLj AND.SDPPOTO'S i TH1J- PLAN IS PORy SHOWING THE A ONE R.OOM CAB1NV METHODOF NOTCHING I AND FITTING LOGS. I -i tf 4 .4 1 I mm Sketches showing a typical bungalow such as are being built in Pinehaven by those tcho want summer homes in con venient locations. The sketches show how the building can be framed by" the owner, who can be builder as well. iZZ Lovers ot the who are erecting their own log cabins In Finehaven learned In the recent article In The TRIBUNE some of the details of constructing such a domicile with their own hands.

Many cabins re being built by E-asttjay residents dn the. wild atmosphere of Plnehaven, which offers the pleasures and repose of a high mountain retreat with the comfort and convenience of being within twenty minutes of the shipping district of a city. The last article touched on the selection of a site, choice of material and laying of a proper foundation. In this the novice will learn something of the art of creating walls the kind that will stay put and reflect honor upon the amateur builder. I'laCIXd THE LOG.

The log is first put into place, then marked for the notch, which is to make-it tif Into the one beneath. Twelve or fifteen Inches should be allowed to protrude on either side, outside the walls of the building. A pair of compasses will prove agood instrument with which to measure for the notch. Holding the compasses so that one point is directly over the other, Let one poivit rest against the side the bottom log. If.

the-compass is sliwly moved over the bottom Us. upper point will mark the exact shape of the cut be This must be done on both sides of the When this has been completed the log can then be taken down and turned the other side up to the notch. The notch should be slight-ly scooped out so the thin outer edges may be accurately fitted. Only the under side ot the log is notched and those which fit above are similarly notched on the under side, which prevents water from settling in and rotting the timber. Tf the log tits properly upon two logs laid with one end on, ff ground and the other end on wall of the' building.

Lay the log to be hoisted at the foot of the skids and pull it up by means of a rope passed about the permanent log at the top. Some builders erect cabins without notching the logs. This is a quicker and easier way, but does not produce so nice a finish. It is accomplished by means of two Inch planking cut to slightly greater length than the proposed height of the walls, and placed. at the four, corners of the; buildlnff, on the sills.

Logs are then cut to th exact length and fitted into place. The walls go up very this method. (Next article: Putting on tlio RADIO FOR GIUBENLAXD. Greenland proposes to put la a radio stfrtion for purposes of communication with the outside world during the winter months. i 6- A if.

Absolute Auction 18 An Eyilirc Novelty, in Real Estate Selling. The a.iirnn sale of the remaining lots in Toler Heights, which is announced for Juno 10. Is attracting attention throughout entire bay district. In the first, place there is a refreshing novelty about an absolute auction that is in itself turning the attention of the buying public In the direction of (his sale. Then Toler Helghlx-is a popular tract that la well known in the bay district, It hiKli- class property splcndiff--ntitlnuk and location.

And there is the declaration by both owner and-auctioneers that the sale is to he "absolute" that is that any -bid will he taken and a clean ealo made, to the highest bidder, no matter what his figure may be. Today lias -been designated by' the owner, and auctioneers as "In spection Fay," and everybody who Is interested is invited to visit thin tract, look It over thoroughly, and decide upon the price that he is williikg to offer for thff lot or lots that may be wanted. Though Tokr Heirfits Is well known as a tract, and though i thousands upon' thusnnda have I passed and repasey this tract in' machines traveling pun the Foot- i hill lioulevard, it wAs thought best by the auctioneer to provide an "inspection Fay." For that reason I a tract niliee harf been estnMished at Ninetieth aveiue and the Foothill where tract map have beeii proyded for prospective purchasers. Kvery lot In the tract has Wmbered and plainly marked on te ground to conform with similar markings upon the map. isiors can easily locate any lot in ie tract with the aid of the map.

A preliminary Inspection 'of this kind wliy prove invaluable, fur the day of Iflie sale. Visitors are expected to post themselves as to hey lot they want with thp aid of the nip and a prelrjilnary visit, and tiey can also determine what theyexpect offer as their rst and as their final bids. 8uch a trip reduces the possibility of los-ini a valuable lot because of upon the day of the Rale. for the owner, N. Trapscott, will be present with a force of men and automobiles to, being'replaced, It can be fastened in Its permanent place by a spllje driven into the corner. In. putting up succeeding logs it is necessary to watch carefully and see that all four walls are of equal height. they are not, it is necessary to select logs Qf smaller or larger dimension as the case may be and hewhe surfaces to meet the situation.

It is Important to overoome the difference gradually and do not try to correct It all with one log. Special care must bo exercised as the walls near the top. When the height 'of the doors and windows has been reached a spike must be driven each side of the width dimension. Then two saw cuts must be made In the last log, sawing It almost It would be disastrous to cut the log all the way through, as thlswould leave the corners of the building without support and the house would collapse. Eight logs should always be used. There are rarely more than two men at work on the smaller cabins, and sometimes only one. Skids are heeded to get the logs Into position.
