Coaches and players from New Orleans to Shreveport began arriving early Thursday afternoon, and by this morning year-long rivals had become friends and roommates. the way it is with these all-star clashes, this one matching the sectional talents of north and south. For instance, Roger Green have to worry about stopping Louisiana Lanky Wells.

After four years of going against each other be helping each other. The collective college coaches around the state say they like the game because it helps promote basketball within the state. The players like it because it gives some one last chance to play, others one more chance to impress pro scouts. In spite of all of that, winning taken a secondary spot. still a primary thought of those involved, as it was last year when the North scored an upset 110-109 victory in the inaugural game at Centenary.

Since the retirements of Beryl Shipley and Louisiana Scotty Robertson, Greene and Hildebrand are the leading contenders for the often title at Northeast games. Both have court-side manners that not only stir up the wrath of the crowd, but often times the wrath of an official or two as well. Hildebrand, for instance, has been seen before at Ewing Coliseum dropping to his knees on the tartan surface.

He may have been begging for mercy, and then again he may have just been chasing an Oscar If anything, Greene is a little more dramatic. He has been known to leave the bench and take a seat in the crowd. At Louisiana Tech this year, he bclly- flopped right to the floor. If he was trying to get the attention, it worked. Keeping that in mind, the best show tonight might not be on the floor but rather on the sidelines.

Wonder which one will draw the first technical? Pardon My French Flashing back on the first all-star game, you might recall that David Pickett scored the winning points on a late layup and then clinched the victory by drawing a charging foul with three seconds to go. Pickett will be among those in the crowd tonight, having flown in from France and a year of basketball there late Wednesday. David was drafted by the Lakers after last game, tried out and missed, but was placed in one of the many European Leagues by agent Herb Rudoy. Flaunting his newly- learned French, and saying he quite understand English very well anymore, David took time out to explain the European set-up. It seems they have different divisions, one through five, with teams limited to the number of Americans on a club according to their division.

He joined the LSU staff as backfield coach in 1974. By Mike Richey Sports Editor It could turn into a running game, this second annual Louisiana Collegiate All-Star contest set tonight at Wilson Ewing Coliseum. New Coach Ron Greene, for instance, put his troops through a two-hour workout Thursday night that included more running than a lot of his South All-Stars were used to. Along the same lines, North All-Stars Coach Tynes Hildebrand of Northwestern says, going to run, get it down quick, and keep also the professional rules, the shot clock not included, that could keep the game wide open. More contact is expected, and each player is allowed six personals during the game of four 12-minute quarters.

Hildebrand wants to shoot because his North club has the shooters. Two of them, Louisiana Mike McConathy and his own NSU star Billy Reynolds, scored over 2,000 career points at their respective universities. The game is considered a toss-up, hut if there is an edge it would go to the North via its marksmanship. The South hopes to offset that edge with a height advantage of its own. McConathy and Reynolds finished seventh and eighth respectively in the nation in scoring this year, and be joined by a fine support cast.

Other North All-Stars include 6-8 Roger Green; 6-3 Willie Simmons and 6-7 Albert Davis; 6-4 A1 Barnes and 6-7 John Pitts; 6-3 Dan Bell; Louisiana 6-6 Lanky Wells and 6-7 Elliott Lawrence, and Louisiana 5-10 Drexel Robinson. Heading the cast for the South All-Stars is 6-11 Jeff Cummings, the tallest player in the crowd and one a number of pro scouts attending will be watching closely. Cummings is joined by 6-6 teammate Arthur Bibbs, 6-4 Daryl Weston, 6-5 Curtis Pace, and 6-5 Mike Pittman; 6-10 Calvin Crews and 6-9 Myron Wilkins; 5-10 Leo McClure and 6-7 Melvin Smith; and LSU 6-5 lob Miller. The game is limited to collegiate seniors only and is in its second year. Centenary hosted last contest which saw the North take a 110-109 upset victory.

Included in the night activities are a pair of preliminary games featuring teams from the Monroe Recreation Department, selection of an All-Star MVP, and a halftime slam-dunk contest.
