of press agentry the passing parade of paid publicity the alluring ads of advance attractions forward in this modem age to a theater opening as AN EVENT which Webster defines as a common occurrence or an incident 3 Tq create or cause the building of something that will so completely transpose! the eventuality of the formal opening into an affair of such far reaching effect that th'e occurrence blazes the trail of progress then the event becomes in reality AN EPOCH and history is made We conscientiously believe that the opening of the Alhambra theater will prove to be an EPOCH for several reasons The Alhambra simon pure is a pleasure palace devoted to the science of advanced photographic reproductions As its it is the master model and creates for the first time a standard embodying certain architectural principles that must in the future be followed aiiid utilized before the stamp of standard can be affixed Costlier buildings may arise more gorgeous equipments appointments and furnishings appear but fundamentally the architectural lines of the Alhambra will be the guiding star 1 The Alhambra opening will prove AN EPOCH for it will show the public a structure embodying safety first the keystone of all modem buildings -It is a structure of concrete and steel fireproof doors and windows no wood or inflammable material with the exception of the back of the massive leather chairs and the sections of the mighty organ The Alhambra as a theater is absolutely independent from the remainder of the building Fire might originate outside of the theater in surrounding buildings or even in the same building yet all would be safe within the-Alhambra while numerous protected exits would lead the way to safety The Alhambra embodies architectural beauty and taste Pure brick concrete and fireproof steel All exterior windows have metal frames and sashes filled with wire glass and all exterior doors are metal covered and fireproof All' floors have a concrete surface and wood and other combust ible materials practically have been eliminated The theater has been separated from the old Fisher building of which it is a part and all adjoining buildings by fireproof walls ceiling ana floors and so effectively has this been done that any adjoining building COULD BE DESTROYED BY FIRE WITHOUT DAMAGING THE THEATRE PORTION IN THE LEAST OR CAUSING AN INTERRUPTION IN THE PER-FORMANCE The means of egress consist of equally 'distributed exit doors of a combined width of 27 feet which means of egress will per-mit the entire audience to leave the building in one minute and twenty seconds The front of The Alhambra is faced with richly decorated cream glazed terra cotta The outer lobby is 14x18 feet and the walls are covered with panelled Italian marble The ceiling is of richly decorated stucco paneling the floor of tile and the ticket booth is made entirely of white marble The entrance or outer lobby is protected from the weather by a very ornamental copper marquise extending over the sidewalk The Alhambra is designed to accommo- date 450 persons 300 chairs being provided on the main floor and 150 in the balcony Separate toilet rooms for men and women have been provided on the main floor and in the balcony These are equipped with modem sanitary fixtures and are provided with tile floors and marble enclosures Drinking fountains are also provided in each tier or level The picture machine room is 6x12 feet and is constructed entirely of reinforced concrete and all openings to the same are covered by fireproof doors Adjoining the picture machine room is an ante room 6x6 feet to be used for reviewing films The interior of the theatre is gorgeous- ly ornamented in stucco and will be illumin-ated try concealed lighting The color scheme adopted for the in- tenor is cream white and French gray with brass and gold trimmings These colors predominate throughout being used for the walls ceilings floors chairs trimming and draperies The Alhambra is equipped with a pie- nura Bystem of indirect steam beating which will supply to each auditor not less than 1- 200 cubic feet of warm fresh air per hour in 1 cold weather the same system by the sub- stitution of a cooling device for the steam coils will supply an equal amount of cool air in warm weather -The theater features a $10000 pipe organ equipped with all modern devices
