"Unfortunately, the Illinois State General Assembly, which was expected to approve a bonding measure for Chicago schools, neglected to act," the union said. (AP) Ending the trade embargo with Vietnam will be a death sentence for Americans still being held in Southeast Asia, Ross Perot said Saturday. The trade embargo is scheduled to expire Tuesday. At that point, every American left behind will be executed because they have no value and because they will be an embarrassment, Perot said. Perot spoke as four people, including one from Illinois, continued a fast they began Aug. 16 to try to persuade President Clinton to continue the trade embargo.

They plan to continue their prayer and fasting vigil, held in a bamboo cage sitting in the parking lot of a car wash, at least until Tuesday. Sirge Vision schooDs get mediation oiPuw Neither side accepts offer from Jesse Jackson CHICAGO (AP) Amid frantic finger pointing and fading hope, the Rev. Jesse Jackson on Saturday offered to mediate an end to the labor dispute and help return 41 1,000 children to Chicago public schools. He said he talked to the presidents of both the school board and the teacher's union that morning. Neither side immediately took him up on his proposal, he said. "They must talk with each other face to face," Jackson said before Operation PUSH, a civil-rights group he founded.

"They need to talk it out, fight it out and save our children." In offering his services as a mediator, Jackson said, "Obviously it has to be someone both sides trust." Jackson got involved in negotiations during an eight-week teachers strike in St. Louis in 1979 and mediated a labor dispute with Chicago firefighters in 1980. mi i ii rim ii ii imiii UlIfflBEffiBQSEUS Normal Round, Flat Top, or Executive Bifocals Over 1,000 frames in stock -choose any frame close to your P.D.
