THE OGDEN STANDARD-EXAMINER OGDEN UTAH SATURDAY EVENING SEPTEMBER 24 1955 ir SA iv Weber Defeats Gila Monsters 32-26 in Well-Played Game By ENSIGN RITCHIE Weber College put on a great football demonstration last night to post its first win at the new stadium by overpowering Eastern Arizona Junior College 32-26 Weber defeated a good Gila tensen hammered at the line until they had moved to the one Stettler carried over from that point for the score and try for the extra point was good Arizona tied the score when Weber lost the ball on downs on its own 28 and on the very next play Lee took off around 40 and outran everybody to the goal line Rufus Barlin set up the Wild- zona attempted to run the ball first score early in the ini-1 over for the extra point end and all the way for the touchdown Weber held as Ari- 'V 1 It I vl HE RAN LIKE THIS ALL NIGHT George Stettler (25) Weber College tailback was caught in this photo crossing the goal line for the fourth touchdown in last game with Eastern Arizona Junior College The Weber player at right is Rufus Barlin Weber pushed across another six-pointer in the final quarter to break a 26-all tie and give the local eleven a 32-26 win 32-13 Monster team The Arizona school brought to Ogden some big rugged linemen and lightning-fast backs Not only was it the first win for the Wildcats in the nearly three seasons on the new field by the estimated 3000 fans undoubtedly set a new attendance mark there Every fan should have left the stadium with a good taste in his mouth For last contest was one of the most thrilling ever staged here in Ogden After Arizona tied the count at 26-all early in the fourth quarter Weber came back with three minutes remaining in the game to push across the winning marker George Stettler 1150-pound tailback who seemed to provide spark whenever it moved headed a drive after taking the Arizona kickoff toward the goal line for the final score The attack bogged down however on the Arizona 12-yard line with fourth down and seven yards to go LeRoy Mecham then replaced Stettler in the tailback slot and calmly hit Bob Browning in the end zone with a pass 4 It was the second time in the game that a Mecham to Browrn-ing pass resulted in a touchdown In the opening period Weber scored its second six-pointer when Mecham threw to Browning on a 58-yard touchdown play Browning streaked behind the Arizona secondary took the pigskin on the tial quarter when he took a pitch out on his own 33 and scampered to the Gila 25 -Four plays later Stettler plunged over from the five Max Swenson who played a beautiful line game before a leg injury blocked an Arizona punt on the visiting 16 and Browning pounced on the ball Jim Freston passed to Byron Anderson to the three-yardline and Freston sneaked over on the next play for the score kick for the extra point was perfect making the score 19-0 Eastern Arizona went to work in the second period to push over three touchdowns and a pair of extra points to lead 20-19 at halftime A series of pass plays moved the ball from the mid-field stripe to the Weber 10 and after Eddie Lee carried to the one Stanley Stephens wrent over for the first score Stephens took a Weber punt on his own 40-yard line picked up good blocking and went all the way for second score The Gila Monsters then went ahead late in the second period when Lee carried over from the two and Ramie Romero booted the extra point iWeber took over the lead in the third quarter After taking the half-opening kickoff on their own 27 Stettler and Wilt Chris- The Weber College March
