ball coming I didn't care much about returning it All I wanted to do was catch it and stay said North Carolina State senior defensive back Mike Nall after his interception 'in the closing seconds of the game Nall's interception helped preserve a spine-tingling 16-13 Wolfpack victory over the favored Clemson Tigers before an overflow crowd at Frank Howard Field of Clemson Memorial Stadium Saturday State is now 64 overall and 4-1 in the ACC Clemson is 6-2 and 2-2 State broke a 13-13 tie with 9:06 left in the game when Nathan Ritter kicked a 25-yard field goal his third of the game Clemson quarterback Billy Lott led the Tiger drive after the ensuing kickoff as he bolted up the middle for 39 yards to the Wolfpack's 4 yard line but four plays up the middle netted only three yards and the took over on downs The Tigers then held the Wolfpack and forced State to punt Gem son took over at the Wolfpack 48 with less than two minutes remaining in the game Lott passed to Jerry Gaillard to the Wolfpack's 40 and Marvin Sims ran 15 yards up the middle to the 25 before Lott tossed a sideline pass to Perry Tuttle to the Wolfpack's 17 yard line Fading back to pass Lott saw the Wolfpack blitz and fired away right into the hands of Nall who returned it to the State 15 Oddly enough it was Noll who kept Lott from scoring on his 39-yard run late in the game when he made the tackle at the State 4 yard line The modest senior wanted little credit for his interception after the game "The thing about Interceptions it's not the defensive back who is responsible for making the big play it's the linemen who put the pressure on the passer and sometimes make him throw when he shouldn't'' Noll said "In this case I just happened to be at the right place at the right The Tigers had a big edge in all the game's statistics but gave the ball away cm turnovers twice early in the game to set up the first two field goals by Ritter The Tigers lost the ball inside their own 30 yard line on their first two possessions in the first quarter Donnie LeGrande intercepted a Lott pass and returned it to the Clemson 27 to set up Ritter's first field goal Three plays netted only two yards and Ritter's kick of 41 yards split the uprights to put the 'Pack ahead 3-0 with 11:29 left in the first quarter Gem son's Sims then fumbled the ball at the Gem son 24 on the Tigers' next play from scrimmage and Rich Etheridge recovered to set up Ritter's second field goal Wayne McLean ran nine yards to the 15 but the next five plays netted only five yards and Ritter came on to kick a 26-yard field goal to put State ahead 64) with 9:21 left in the first quarter The Wolfpack had a total of 16 offensive yards and only one first down in their first two drives but still led 64) Clemson drove to the Wolfpack 25 on its next drive but a penalty and a seven-yard loss pushed the Tigers back to the 37 from where they punted into end zone The Tigers put together a short drive late in the first quarter and made it to the State 21 before Ofaed Ariri came on to kick a 38-yard field goal to cut the 'Pack's lead to 6-3 with 28 left The Wolfpack took the ensuing kickoff and marched 80 yards in 17 plays to score their only touchdown of the game One of the key plays in the drive came when the Tigers had State stopped on fourth down but State's quarterback Scott Smith fumbled the ball near the sideline and the ball rolled forward five yards before going out of bounds giving the 'Pack enough yardage for the first down at the Clemson 31 Nine plays later Smith passed to Mike Quick in the left corner of the end zone for the touchdown Ritter's kick made it 13-3 Gemson came storming back in the second half to tie the score Early in the third quarter the Tigers combined the running of freshman Chuck McSwain Sims and Lott's passing to reach the Wolfpack's 22 before the drive stalled and Ariri kicked a 38-yardfield goal to make it 13-6 with 6:38 left in the third quarter The Tigers held the 'Pack again on its next drive and then drove 67 yards in 11 plays to tie the score McSwain ran 18 yards on a pilchout for the touchdown Ariri's kick tied the score with -13 left in the third quarter Woodrow Wilson later returned a Gemson punt 53 yards to set up Ritter's You ran enter your own foursome at the Beachwood club or at The Sun News sports department The entry fee is only $22 per person and that includes green fees cart fees refreshments and an estimated $500 in prizes if at least 100 golfers are entered by Friday Nov 9 Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox and Lee Stanton of the Seattle Mariners were the two guests for the tournament last year Who the guests will be this year no one knows invitations have gone out to such notable baseball stars as Rice Hank Aaron Gorman Thomas Phil Niekro Butch Hobson and Billy Martin and rack car drivers Neil Bonnett Buddy Baker and Donnie and Bobby Allison Evel Knievel promised us he would be here for the tournament also when he was here about three months I Wolfpack wall ago Memorial Stadium Saturday Abraham is a starting sophomore linebacker for the Wolfpack from Myrtle Beach The Wolfpack edged the Tigers 16-13 Saturday (AP) Gem son's Chuck McSwain 35 attempts to brush aside the arm of North Carolina State's Dann Lute who rushes in front of teammate Robert Abraham 53 during first quarter action at Clemson Although some of the above named professional athletes have said they would like to play in the tournament not a single one has given us a written committment yet But don't be surprised if at least five or sis of them show up including the unpredictable Jim Rice who has passed up the trip to Japan with the Baseball All-Stars chosen by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn so he can play golf in South Carolina A great cause be the winning margin" he said Clemson held State to 101 yards rushing and 47 yards passing State's touchdown in the second quarter was the first touchdown the Tigers have given up in the first three quarters of their seven games this season Clemson had 222 yards rushing and 134 passing and also led in first downs 1941 holding State to two first downs in the second half winning field goal a 25-yarder with 9:06 left in the game "This is not the first time I've had a good day kicking the said Ritter after the game kicked five against East Carolina last year but I don't think any of those five were bigger than the last one today Although I felt the field goal last one would figure in the outcome of the game I didn't think it would turn out to The purpose of the tournament is to raise money for an athletic scholarship for an area high school athlete Your entry fee is tax deductible and win or lose you'll be glad you played because by participating in the tournament you will help send someone to college who otherwise might not get to attend college Last year's scholarship winner Sandra Leach is a freshman basketball player on the Coastal Carolina College team Lisch leads IT This year we will print a program with pictures of the winners of the last two Sun Newi tournaments at Deer Track two years ago and at Azalea Sands last year Pairings for the tournament will be listed in the program and that's why we would like to have all the entries in by Friday November 9 Irish rally past USC It may take us several hours Saturday to get the pairings made up and we'll have to get them printed in time to put them in the program for Sunday So we hope you won't delay and sign up as soon as possible If you don't have the money now Just go ahead and call either The Sun Newt or Beachwood and give your name and handicap and we'll collect the money later or on the day of the tournament It would be nice to have at least one pro at each area golf club bring in at least one or maybe two foursomes And people like the Happy Dots from North Myrtle Beach who played last year would certainly be a welcomed addition to this year's tournament also It would also be nice to see some of the area groups who play on Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays reschedule their tournament for Sunday Nov 11 at Beachwood They could play in the benefit tournament and count their scores not only for the prizes to be given in The Sun New tournament but also for their own private group How about it golfers? There are enough of you on The Grand Strand that if 5 percent at you were to enter The Sun Newt tournament it would be a booming success There's the Welder's Wanderers Sapp's Swingers Pine Lakes Seniors ion's Rovers Bailey's Bandits Raccoon Run women Intercoastal Seniors Litchfield Men All you groups and the many other groups at each golf club along The Grand Strand should band together and help us make this tournament something we ALL can be proud of By the way the $22 entry fee includes $8 for cart fees $1 for the program which everyone in the tournament will receive and $5 for the prizes The other $10 from each entry fee will go to the scholarship fund Last year the field of 112 players was filled up early and more than 50 people were turned away Don't wait until the last minute this year If you do we hate to say you might be left out Cutting corners SOUTH BEND Ind (AP) Rusty Lisch directing a magnificent 80-yard touchdown drive Saturday called the final play in the huddle then whispered something else to Dean Masztak "He told me to hook up in the end zone and that the ball would be said Masztak It was and Masztak gathered in the 14-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds remaining which set up a two-point conversion pass from Lisch to Pete Holohan to give 14th-ranked Notre Dame a 18-17 comeback victory over South Carolina "It was just a matter of going out and doing what we do in practice" said Lisch "They were in a three-man rush which gives you 20 yards a crack and that's not too shabby I wonder why anyone goes to a three-man rush? The best pass defense is rushing the passer" South Carolina didn't rush Lisch and the senior quarterback completed five passes in what proved to be the winning drive Masztak felt no pressure knew we had to score but I didn't feel any extra pressure" said Masztak "It all happened so fast I really didn't get a chance to think about Neither did Irish Coach Dan Devine think about a possible tie "I've never gone for a tie in my life and I never will" said Devine "I didn't come to Notre Dame to play anybody a Lisch accounted for all the yardage in the final 89-yard drive as he completed five passes hitting Holohan twice Ty Dickerson and Vagas Ferguson to set up the winning toss to Masztak The victory snapped South Carolina's five-game winning streak and left the Gamecocks with a 5-2 record Notre Dame also is 5-2 It was another blazing finish to go down in Notre Dame football annals South Carolina struck for 17 points In the third quarter on a 62-yard pass from Garry Harper to Zion McKinney the South Carolina 6-yard line But a penalty and two incomplete passes by Lisch stalled the drive and Chuck Male missed on a 34-yard field goal pttempt With a little more than six minutes to play the Irish moved to the South Carolina 37 but a Lisch pass was deflected and intercepted by Pat Bowen at the Gamecocks' 28-yard line South Carolina picked up two first downs and moved to the Irish 46 before Jay Feltz was forced to punt into the Notre Dame end zone Beginning from the Notre Dame 20 Lisch hit Holohan with first-down passes of 12 and 15 yards With 1:19 left Lisch completed another pass to Dickerson for 18 yards Coatlased on Page i-B Notre Dame's Ty Barber 12 holds off South Carolina game at South Bend Ind The Irish came back to score defenders WT Williams 72 and Phil Ellis 80
