Fighter jet crashes into town; 2 die FORST, West Germany (AP) A U.S. Air Force jet fighter slammed into the middle of this small town and exploded Thursday, killing the American pilot and at least one resident, injuring 16 people and forcing scores to evacuate. "The neighborhood looks like the bombed-out houses of World War II," said Herbert Loef, a 52-year-old baker who lives down the street from where the F-16 crashed into at least five homes. In Washington, Air Force spokesman Capt.

Virginia Cody identified the pilot as Lt. Thomas Edward Doyle, 24, of Oroville, Calif. He entered active duty in May 1985 and had been at Hahn Air Base since September 1987. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1985. Wreckage was scattered over a wide area, and several hours after the flames had been doused, black smoke still billowed from Forst.

Emergency crews evacuated more than 70 residents because the plane was carrying a canister of hydrazine, which is used to restart engines and which produces toxic gas when mixed with water. Central (Continued from Page 1) manmade chemicals and quality deterioration. Of those, he said salt pollution is the most serious concern. East of Salina, at the confluence of the Solomon and Smoky Hill rivers, Gerard said, a natural outcropping of salt causes 350 tons of salt daily to empty into the riverbed, a circumstance that makes Smoky Hill water between Solomon and Junction City unfit for municipal and industrial use. There also are salt problems farther south, including two areas near Groveland in McPherson County.

"The salt problems are so hideous they defy solution," Gerard said. Quality was a major issue at the Kansas Rural Water Association's two-day conference, which ended Thursday. Howard Duncan, chief of technical services for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, said, "on the whole, Kansas public drinking water quality is very good, but without a doubt there are some problems in some locations, and remedial action to correct these problems is underway." He said the most serious problem is nitrate, which can rob infants of oxygen, a condition commonly known as "blue baby." He said about 7 percent of Kansas public water supplies exceed federal limits. The majority of these systems are found in north-central and northeast Kansas, Duncan said. For your information Hospital admissions Asbury DeLois J.
