'-V 'V'v r-' J-r -K-J THE OAKLAND TR8UNE Y- v''V'V -SUNDAY March 8 1997 DAN Staff of the Ebony Museum on 14th Street 4 'r i I is rededicated The fra public event begins at 2 pm in the nevrty restored Victorian at 1034 14th SI across from Lowell Park The opening will feature the work of six artists Including founder Alssaloul Ayola Vemlta who established the museum in 1980 creating a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating African and African-American art sculpture and examples of popular cultural ethnic artifacts The museum's initial opening attracted large numbers ofvlsl- fors but damage caused by the Loma Prieta earthquake and a subsequent fire food Vemlta to close the house and move what was left of her one of a kind collection to quarters in Jack London Village After eight years the museum is ready to reopen in its original Oak Colter neighborhood while also keeping the site at Jack London Village open The 2-story plus attic structure originally was known as the Keys-Hess house According to Cultural Heritage Survey files it was built in 1880 and originally valued at $2500 (architect and -builder unknown) The original occupant was Gilbert Keyes a San Francisco com- modifies merchant (who no doubt like thousands of others made use of the convenient dally ferry service leaving from Oakland Point to commute to his of- -flee across the bay) After 1900 August Hess and family (he was with the Oakland Gas Lighting and Heat Co) made the house their home for the next SOyears The survey's evaluation notes that the house (with its comer lo- cation hip and gable roof multiple bays and Intact milled brackets) is a good example 'of 1 the Stick style and appears eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as a contributor to a potential Oak Center Historic District The Oak Center District (Adeline to Myrtle streets and 14th to 21st streets) contains (me of the best concentrations of Vlctorian-style homes in Northern California Through the 1870s 80s and 90s medlum-to-large houses on 50- to 100-foot lots sprang up on what had been marshy oak-studded flatland west of the original town Unlike San Francisco where 1 many neighborhoods featured blocks of attached rowhouses West Oakland homes of this era were constructed as fra standing villas fully designed on all sides Accessory buildings carriage houses bams and the like frequently appeared (a surprising number still survive) Cheque points IHAVE NEVSKbeea able to figure out why the pleas of paper we sign at hone are called checks while the ones we sign when traveling are referred to as cheques I suppose because has a sort of suave continental air to It and when away from hone we can pretend to be suave cpntJnental types because nobody knows us The traveler's cheques I buy when I'm going away on vacation are not the ones most frequently promoted in television ads the kind that the ads warn ok against So when I purchase them 1 make a point of being honest with the bank teller letting her know that I am fully aware of the risk Fm taking Td like some traveler's cheques" 1 say totally worthless kind that wlll leave me stranded at an airport or in some foreign country and ruin my vacation if I lose them?" i "Yes we have those" she says many would you like?" You might Just as well carry iash Also you have to sign every me of them when you buy them then when you turn in the ones you haven't used you have to sign them all over again If you're buying any sizable number of cheques thfl can be a lot of penwbrk Once as I began signing a batch ofcheques the bank teller got a phone call informing her Unit her uncle had died By the time I signed the last cheque the uncle was burled and the aunt had remarried Also they have to be signed In the presence of the teller never been able to understand why They already have my money and it seems to me It matter what name I used on the cheques I could sign them all "Mother Goose" and the bank wouldn't be out a penny The other thing I worry about is that when I attempt to spend a traveler's cheque I won't be able to duplicate my original signature The reason you sign the cheques originally of courseb that when you spend one by signing it off to some merchant he can compare the two signatures to be sure It's you even If he's never met you before and you're going under the name of Mother Goose The thinking here seems tp be that if you lose the cheques and some con artist finds them have to forge your slgna-tore to spend them and that this scam will be seen through by any sharpeyed waiter or hotel clerk To tell you the truth I doubt that particularly as I always seem to get a waiter whocan't hit my water glass on the first try 1 SUSPECT in fact that the average forger will do a lot better Job of duplicating my signature than I will 1 have a terrible time writing my name the same way twfee My signature seems to depend on my mood of the moment Often when I sign off a traveler's cheque and hand ltto a waiter and he squints at the two signatures I fed that he's-'sizing me up as some sort of Je- kytl-and-Hyde personality If he squints long enough HI Just give him cadi The next time I buy traveler's -cheques I think 1 will sign them all Goose" If it work I still can get my Oak Center Neighborhood Association were determined to preserve the character of their older homes and large size lots Bowing to strong grassroots pressure in 1968 the federal gov- eminent authorized $15 million in low Interest loans and grants to district property owners the first such program in the nation so they could rehabilitate not demolish their homes The neighborhood association remains
