Around Town: Film C4 TH-CtTY HERALD FRIDAY MAY 22 1868 flatter than a squashed taxi GodriBa Rated PG-13 for mature themes violence It's playing at the Columbia Center 8 Mr Movie rating: 2 bags The Hone Whisperer Rated PG-13 for mature themes It's playing at the Columbia Center 8 Mr Movie rating: 4 bags QuestforCamebt Rated It's playing at the Columbia Cinema 3 Mr Movie rating: 2 bags Movies rated on a zero-to-five hot-buttered popcorn scale: 4 to 5 bags Must see on the big screen 3 to 3Vi bags: Good film see it if it's your type of movie 2to2V4 bags: Wait until it comes out on video 0 to 2 bags: Don't bother The Horse Whisperer is Ordinary People meets The Bridges qf Madison County sopping wet with dysfunctional people and forbidden love And the two-hanky ending means the story isn't the only thing that will be soaking wet People leaving the theater when I saw The Horse Whisperer were sniffing and dabbing their eyes not sure why since all seen this movie before Originality is not The Horse Whisperer's strong suit character is ripped off from Mary Tyler Ordinary People ice queen cold withdrawn and totally out of touch with her family co-workers and anything that resembles intimacy in life She also does Meryl Streep from Bridges Thomas is a woman dying for an emotional closeness that has escaped her for years Redford comes across like some kind of a New Age guru He has all the answers in 20 words of less Name the problem got a platitude to combat it He's also way too old for this character Bedford's locks are still golden but I suspect dyed He'S now 60 and though his face looks boyish from a distance craggy and wrinkled up close Yes The Horse Whisperer is flawed but as a director Redford has enough ego and filmmaking moxie to let it all hang out This is a woman's movie and Redford definitely is in touch with what they want to see The Horse Whisperer has it all love drama humor and animals It'S about family and crisis and the drastic lengths go to when feced with a seemingly unsolvable problem And best of all ladies The Horse Whisperer is an emotional roller coaster Redford is also the consummate director Like his A River Runs Through It this movie plays like a travel video for the state of Mon- Godzilla As a child of the '50s and I grew up with Godzilla Outside King Kong and The Blob he was my favorite largerthan-life monster GodoUa movies were totally hokey Even to a preteen kid it was obvious the brute was a guy in a rubber suit stomping on fake buildings toy vehicles and squishing nonmoving miniature people between his latex toes Still Godzilla and his spinoff Japanese monster cousins Mothra and Rodan and to a certain extent still are cool What was outrageous in the late 1950s and early 1960s doesn't work at all in 1998 Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin the producers of the new scored major points with Independence Day It riveted you to your seat The action sequences where the aliens attack were fast paced and intense and the special effects had your eyes bulging When the dust settled you were gasping for breath The energy level of attack on New York City is zippo no power at all behind the assault He clomps on people slashes buildings with his tail and creates all kinds of chaos you know all the things mutant reptiles are supposed to do to humans But the quandary Emmerich and Devlin's Godzilla only does what you expect him to da nothing more The suspension of disbelief is important to a film like Godzilla and most of us are willing to do that to a point The beast is 200 feet long and stands 20 stories tall He runs so fast jet-powered helicopters keep up But Godzilla with all his size power and speed cant catch four characters crammed in a New York City cab And they're hampered by all the debris strewn through the streets from his initial frenzied attack Mr Movie by Gary Wolcott I've heard it's hard to catch a cab in New York City but this is ridiculous The old Godzilla wouldnt waste time trying to catch them anyway just fry them like fish with his lethal flames Godzilla as you is a fire-breather He get to do much of that in the 90s version In this film Godzilla mostly mashes things with his oversized feet The film's hook is Godzilla is pregnant Hek looking for a place to lay eggs and Manhattan Island is the perfect spot is pregnant? Biologist and film hero Matthew Broderick says that's because Godzilla is asexual His girlfriend quickly quips the fUn in It's a question that inadvertently goes to the heart ofthe movie Godzilla is no fon and the only point ofthe beastie being pregnant is to spawn sequels This movie hopes the audience that gobbled up the pandemonium of Jurassic Pork will dine on the premise of Godzilla They're the same kind of movie but where Jurassic Park was filet mignon Godzilla is leftovers The Horse Whisperer Nick book The Horse Whisperer was unfinished when Robert Redford engaged in a heated bidding war for the completed product As soon as he got the screen rights Redford like all producers seem to do these days made Kntght-Rktter Tribune wholesale changes in the story The Horse Whisperer begins with a truck hitting two young girls on horseback It kills one ofthem cripples the other and maims her horse Neither the girl nor the horse is mentally quite right after the crash The mother Kristin Scott Thomas who has oodles of psychological problems has virtually no relationship with her daughter and is in the process of becoming estranged from her doting husband As an editor of a magazine Thomas hears of a horse whisperer who lives in Montana They talk to animals on their own level and solve their problems with people On a whim Thomas grabs the girl and the horse and heads for the grassy plains and a date with tana Its bold sweeping panoramas are awesome When the plot slows to a crawl Redford whisks you off your feet and dazzles you with exceptional cinematography and breathtaking scenery Quest for Cameot My problem with a lot ofthe current animated features is they're really not for kids Quest for Camelot like Pocha-hontas Anaktasia and to a certain extent The lion King is a musical that belongs more to Broadway than the silver screen It's about a young woman whose deceased fether was a knight at King Round Table She wants to be a knight toa but women aren't allowed A villain steals sword i to do continued Poster No 3 now available for Horse Heaven Round- Up running quarter horse Reprints ofthe poster are for sale at the John Clement Gallery in Columbia Center mall Cenex on A Street in Pasco the Tack Box on Vista Way and the Columbia River Trading Co on Washington Street both in Kennewick There are 250 signed and numbered artist editions available They sell for $25 There also are 750 regular edition unsigned reprints available at a cost Collectors can call Harding at 586-1671 Proceeds from the sales will go to the Horse Heaven Round-Up Rom C3 547-1860 South Central Washington Orchid Society Show and orchid sale is 11 ijh-5pm Saturday and Sunday at IheAKed Arts Gallery 69 Lee Boulevard In Richland Admission Is free Cal 627-3531 Festivals The Ttt-CIties FIHpino Community celebrates IK yeared Philippine Independence Saturday wShapubic symposium The sym- I- poeium wnicn scxibbs re niSRXicai aixi cultural background of the country begins at 4 pm in the HUB on the Columbia Basin Colege campus in Rasca Four lectures and an open forum wM be featured Wowed by performances by a dance troupe and choir There also will be a puMc dance and authentic FWpino banquet presented by Ihe FifoincAmerican Association in the Trt-CnesTh The draw it S8 ffl i HI i sti 1 Lm r8Ctnciv(jnnwvw(rvsiiVBiACJ(JUBJun0 26-28 at die Benton-Franldin County Fair- By the Herald staff Tri-City artist Ginny Harding has released her third poster in a seven-part series commemorating the 50th anniversary ofthe Horse Heaven Round-Up The poster titled Rhapsody In Red White Blue depicts a spectator favorite at the rodeo bull riding Harding describes bull riding as a gut-wrenching bone-crushing athletic competition that pits a steel-nerved cowboy against one of the most monstrous hunks of twisting churning dynamite on four legs Rhapsody Red White Blue is the third in the A Cowboy Ballet series that when completed will depict rodeo's seven action-packed events Harding said Harding was the first woman to be a 1 icensed jockey's agent in California She is considered a premier cover artist and her work has been featured on the covers of more than 30 national publications and race programs She also is a two-time winner of the National Sprint Award which is given for excellence in illustrative journalism of a 56K SOON V90 Excaliber which threatens the the only one who can save the day Quest for Camelot has a two-headed dragon for comedy relief but it enough to keep kids from being bored out of their skulls The producers hired singer songwriters David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager to do the music or should I say muzak These two write the wimpiest music on the planet Add to that the fact that every two minutes there's a yawner song and you have a film that's not only not for kids but also dull as dirt for adults Comments or questions?
