A cast of castoff whos Paul Newman James Gamer Gene Hackman and Susan Sarandon Except for Sarandon they get much movie work anymore Too bad because actors get any better than these guys Newman is a former private detective who cleans up the messes of a philandering couple of Hollywood has-beens Sarandon and Hackman He gets embroiled in a mystery when Hackman sends him to deliver some blackmail money and someone gets killed Then a couple of other people get killed and Newman finds himself a suspect Twilight is a genuinely taut thriller with plenty of twists and turns It has an intelligent plot and actors who need slow motion special effects to make things interesting Hush Hush is a routine psychopath movie What makes it exceptional is who toe psychopath is Lange as Johnathan Schaech mom Schaech is married to Gwyneth Paltrow jealous and tries to undo the bond by killing the bride morbid and well-worn stuff but Lange makes it work If anybody's a better actress than Lange I know who it is She smiles and looking radiant delivers normal lines in the regular way But underneath all that she drips venom You catch it in the lines or in the fecial features but the poison is just below the surface just out of reach Lange is simply an awesome actress and has so much flin in this role it makes Hush's drab story worth seeing ON THE WEB: If you want to find out wM Mr Movia thought of twists and turns Bridges is mistaken for an old millionaire whose very young wife owes money all over town He goes to toe guy to complain about his rug being ruined by the confosed goons When kidnappers snatch toe millionaire'll wife Bridges is asked to be the bag man The story also is wrapped around bowling Bowling and kidnapping? had me howling with laughter The Big Lebowski is a very flinny and typical of toe Coens warped movie Bridges and Goodman are a great team toe best work either has done in a decade character is a throwback to the 008 lazy stoned most of toe time a real slob The dude is also a pacifist who want trouble he want anything but to sit around and get high character is a Vietnam vet with an attitude Everything relates to toe war which he talks about incessantly Goodman goes off half-cocked at toe slightest provocation In one scene he threatens to kill a guy for a bowling error On paper it sounds stupid but that is one of the funniest scenes in nun Mudng drifting snow around its an isolated British Columbia community Most of the school children in the area are killed as a school bus crashes into a ftosen taka Tun Hnim plays an ambulance-chasing attorney who tries to get the parents to cash in on the catastrophe Holm is a study intact At first he treads on the subject like a man walking across cracked brittle ice similar to that which took the lives of the children He talks softly imploring the shell-shocked parents with his eyes and the logic of the law But Holm is a flawed man introverted beaten by life As the film moves forward the glass house in which he lives begins to crack and a guilt-wracked tortured soul emerges Holm is- brilliant Most actors play this kind of role like an emotional yo-yo up then down overamped outbursts rule Not so with Holm He takes a different road Holm never breaks never gives an inch He stays in character throughout We see the flaws the other characters The Sweet Hereafter is directed by Atom Egoyan who tells the story in bits and pieces He weaves in and but of past and present with flashes insight into toe lives of toe characters Along toe way he gives tantalizing clues to the truth of toe pwflil accident that claimed the lives of so many children I Atfi At first The Siueet Hereafter is so buiet almost stifling Bit by bit toe tension builds as we are shown how parents friends and siblings leact to toe tragedy But toe story is jnore than just toe crash What icurred before the bus slides into ie lake is every bit as important as ie incident itself pec the toe film seethes with emotions that seem to boil beneath toe surface of each personality You hear them in conversations but you know there They're like a time bomb ticking before it explodes so still so quiet deadly The Sweet Hereafter is a study in brilliance one of the top three movies of 1997 This film is one oftoe reasons Around Town briefs By the Herald staff Monlson drops out of Gorge concert Van Morrison
